The average baby will use between 2,500 and 3,000 diapers in their first year of life. Thats a lot of diapers! And its not just the cost of the diapers themselves that you have to think about theres also the cost of wipes, diaper cream, and other diaper-related items.
If youre wondering how many diapers you need per day, the answer depends on a few factors how often your baby uses the bathroom, whether or not they are breastfed, and their age. On average, you can expect to use between 8 and 10 diapers per day for a newborn, 6 to 8 for a breastfed baby, and 4 to 6 for an older baby.

How Many Diapers Do I Need In Size Two
The majority of respondents said they used size two for 2-3 months, though there was a good number of people who used them for between four and six months. I would recommend getting at least a two month stock of size twos.
I would go with an average of eight diapers a day when your baby is in size two, so around 480 size two.

This is a great question! We totally understand where parents are coming from. On the one hand, babies grow up so fast and you dont want to be stuck with a bunch of diapers your baby has outgrown! On the other hand, diapers that are too big will be uncomfortable for your baby and will have you cleaning up leaks every time! Not only that, if the size 1 diaper you get doesnt have the cut out for the umbilical cord, the waistband could rub and affect how your baby heals. With that being said, we need to understand a few things before we can figure out how many diapers you will need.
Diaper Sizing
Before we get into how many diapers you need, its important to understand how diapers are sized. Newborn diapers typically are sized for up to 10lbs. According to the Center for Disease Control, the average American newborn boy is 7.8lbs and the average newborn girl is 7.6 lbs. About 90% of newborn boys and girls are around this size.
Babys Growth
Looking at this handy chart from the CDC, it shows us how much weight a newborn baby will gain as he or she gets older. For this question, we can ignore the other stuff on the chart and just focus on the black box:
What we see here is that by the time your baby is about a month and a half old, theyre on the cusp of outgrowing their newborn diapers.

For newborns you can expect to use 8-10 diapers a day for the first 30 days, bringing us to roughly 240 DIAPERS during babys first month!
To be clear, thats not to say that youll use 240 of the newborn diaper size. Remember, diaper sizes are based on babys weight. This is why I recommend only getting a small amount of the newborn size, but stocking up more in sizes 1 and 2.

Just something to think about, I did the same thing for my DD â stocked up on huggies. But they did not fit my DDâs body at all! Literally every poop was a blowout. No one I knew had this issue with huggies but sometimes I takes a bit to to find the right brand for you either due to body type or skin sensitivities.
My son was less than 5 lbs and wore newborn for quite awhile. We actually had to buy preemie and newborn diapers on the way home from the hospital because everyone told us to buy size 1!
My daughter was 5lbs 11oz, wore preemie diapers for 3 weeks and then NB for 3 more month. Donât stock up on diapers. If anything, every time you are at the store get a gift card for the cost of a box of diapers and load up on gift cards.

Cloth diapers are an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable diapers. After an initial investment, you can choose to use cloth diapers without continuing to shell out money for disposable optionsand maybe even reuse for subsequent children. But even though you wont need nearly as many cloth diapers as you would disposable options , youll still need to have quite a few on hand.
