Which Babies Get Erythema Toxicum Neonatorum

On average, ETN occurs in healthy babies born at full term, between 3 and 14 days of life. The rash can occur in the first 48 hours of life but 9 out of 10 cases are in babies more than 2 days old.

Overall, it seems to be more common in babies who are heavier at birth, in babies born in the summer or autumn and in babies who are fed milk powder substitute or a mixed diet.

Erythema is the medical word for redness. Neonatorum refers to the fact that the rash occurs in the neonatal period. The neonatal period is the time between birth and 28 days of age. How Long Does Newborn Baby Acne Last

Newborn baby acne usually only lasts a few days, and in the vast majority of cases is completely gone within two weeks. Sometimes spots can appear only to disappear a few hours later and sometimes they will stick around for three to four months. Recurrences can happen but are generally very mild.

It sounds awful, I know, but when my baby first developed the acne all I could think once I knew it was nothing to worry about was, Oh no, shes not perfect anymore. What will people say? Of course, nobody said anything. Well, nothing unkind anyway. If I brought it up , they just shared stories of their own childs ailments, from newborn baby eczema to newborn baby cradle cap, and how theyd also been a mix of concerned and embarrassed which actually really helped and made me feel less like a Disney villain.

Baby Acne: Causes And Treatments

Tiny red bumps. Pimples. Your newborns perfect complexion seems to have turned into the skin belonging to a hormonal, pubescent teenager.

Newborn acne is common, but why does it effect some babies and not others? In reality, science does not know the actual cause of baby acne. There is one common theory that seems to make everyone happy and is pretty well backed up, so it is the general cause that most people spit out when referring to this common stage of infancy: hormones.

How To Treat Baby Acne

There are no treatments or natural, at-home remedies for clearing up baby acneâyou will just have to wait for it to go away on its own.

In the meantime, hereâs how you can care for your baby’s delicate skin:

  • Place a soft, clean blanket under your babyâs head when theyâre awake to shield their skin from any laundry detergent residue on sheets or clothing

  • Ensure that your baby’s bed sheets and clothing haven’t been washed with harsh laundry detergents

  • Maintain proper hygiene by gently washing your little one’s face every day with warm water and a mild baby soap and pat it dry

  • Avoid irritating the acne by pinching or scrubbing the pimples as this may cause more harm or even lead to an infection. Avoid moisturizing their face with lotions or oils.

The weird thing about baby acne is that no one really knows for sure whats behind it. Like adolescent acne, it is reckoned to be down to overactive oil glands in the skin. But what makes them overactive in the first place is anyones guess.

Most doctors put it down to hormones both yours and your babys. Baby acne is more common in boys, and it is believed to be the result of a higher quantity of testosterone in their system.

However, this is nothing to fret over. The hormones thought to cause acne wont affect any other part of your babys development. Its just a little skin blemish for now which will almost certainly pass without a trace.

What Else Could It Be

People may also confuse other skin conditions, such as erythema toxicum neonatorum and chickenpox, with baby acne or eczema.

Erythema toxicum neonatorum is a harmless skin condition that may occur within the first couple of days of life. It causes small spots and pimple of 14 mm in diameter on the arms and legs. Notably, the rash does not appear on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet. It typically clears up by itself within 5 to 14 days.

Chickenpox is a contagious skin disease that causes a rash of blister-like spots and pimples on the stomach, back, and face. The rash can spread across the whole body and tends to occur alongside itching, tiredness, and fever.

Chickenpox can lead to severe complications in babies, so anyone who suspects chickenpox in a baby should take them to see a doctor immediately.

How Do You Treat Baby Acne

In two words, you dont. Well, usually. Because baby acne typically disappears on its own within several months, no medical treatment is usually recommended, explains the Mayo Clinic. If your babys acne lingers for much longer, your babys doctor may recommend a medicated cream or other treatment.

You definitely dont want to try any over-the-counter medications without consulting your babys pediatrician. The last thing you want to do is exacerbate your cute little bubelas skin woes even more. What you can do is keep babys face as clean as possible by gently washing it with warm water every day. And no matter how many Dr. Pimple Popper videos youve watched on YouTube, do not squeeze the bumps on your babys face!

Symptoms Of Baby Acne

Baby acne looks like tiny red or white pustules or bumps rather than blackheads or whiteheads. The pimples usually form on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead, but they can also show up on the scalp, neck, upper back and upper chest.

Symptoms of neonatal acne include:

  • Small red or white bumps or pimples on the cheeks, nose and forehead
  • Reddish skin surrounding the bumps

Unlike neonatal acne, infantile acne usually involves whiteheads and blackheads along with red spots and pimples. Cysts that form with infantile acne may cause long-term scarring. Infantile acne affects the cheeks, chin and forehead and sometimes other parts of the body.

porterougedesigns: How Long Does Baby Acne Last

Although most baby acne typically goes away by 6 weeks of age, in some cases it can last a little longer, or even appear for the first time after the newborn period.

Baby acne that appears after 6 weeks is referred to as infantile acne.

For persistent cases still apparent after 6 weeks, or new cases of infantile acne that first appear after 6 weeks of age, its best to seek advice from a properly trained and certified health professional, such as a pediatric dermatologist.

Sometimes, it can be due to topical products your babys skin is extra sensitive to at other times it might be an indication of another health problem.

A dermatologist will advise you whether or not its necessary to treat your infant and suggest the most appropriate skincare products to use.

What Is Newborn Baby Acne And What Does It Look Like

So what is newborn baby acne exactly? Newborn baby acne is a baby skin condition where tiny red or white bumps or pimples appear on a babys skin, typically when theyre between one and four weeks of age although some babies are born with it.

The medical term for baby acne is erythema toxicum neonatorum but that makes it sound more alarming than it is. Its actually a very common condition that affects up to four or five babies in every 10*.

Baby acne should not be confused with infantile acne which begins later or adult acne. It should also not be confused with baby milk spots. If youre unsure, please consult your GP.

The spots first appeared on my sons face when he was about 10 days old and I was convinced it was because I was doing something wrong perhaps washing him too much or even not enough. I also wondered whether he could be allergic to his formula. I shared my worries with the other moms at my parents group, lots of whom were second and third-time parents, and they explained that it was just newborn acne and that lots of their older kids had had it just after birth too. I felt a lot better after that and stopped trying to fix it. After a month it was gone. Its frustrating but you do just have to be patient.
