When Should I Take My Infant To The Doctor If They Arent Peeing Enough

If you catch dehydration early, you should be able to offer fluids orally, and get your little one back on track. This is one of the most important reasons to monitor your babys wet diapers. It gives you a warning before dehydration becomes severe.

Generally, you should start to worry if your baby has not produced a wet diaper in six hours. signs of severe dehydration such as tearless crying, extreme fussiness, being inconsolable, and a sunken fontanel are a medical emergency.

If unsure of the severity of dehydration, continue offering breastmilk or formula while calling your pediatrician . Even if it is after office hours, many pediatricians have an answering service to contact for emergencies. If you cannot get a hold of your pediatrician, it is best to take your baby to an emergency room. Especially with newborns, its always best to err on the side of caution. Dehydration can escalate quickly because they are so small.

The Following Things Are Normal:

• Frequent and/or long feedings.
• Varying nursing pattern from day to day.
• Cluster nursing for several hoursusually eveningseach day. This may coincide with the normal fussy time that most babies have in the early months.
• Growth spurts, where baby nurses more often than usual for several days and may act very fussy. Common growth spurt times in the early weeks are the first few days at home, 7 10 days, 2 3 weeks and 4 6 weeks.

What Should I Do If I Dont Think I Have Enough Milk

Breastmilk is made on a supply and demand basis the more milk your baby takes from your breast, the more milk you make. But the baby must be well latched on to do this. You can increase your milk supply by:

• Feed your baby as often and as long as your baby wants
• Feed from both breasts at each feed
• Keep your baby close and give lots of skin-to-skin, particularly in the early weeks, to maximise opportunities to breastfeed
• Avoid giving your baby infant formula
• Avoid dummies until your baby has learnt how to breastfeed well

If youre worried your baby isnt getting enough milk, speak to your health visitor, midwife or a breastfeeding counsellor. They can check how the baby is latched and may suggest changes you can make to help your baby get a deeper latch. Your health visitor or midwife can also rule out any underlying health problems or may refer you for a tongue tie assessment .

Things That Can Affect Your Milk Supply

• Poor attachment and positioning.
• Not feeding your baby often enough.

• Having to spend time away from your baby after the birth for example, because they were premature.
• Illness in you or your baby.
• Giving your baby bottles of formula or a dummy before breastfeeding is well established.
• Using nipple shields although this may be the only way to feed your baby with damaged nipples and is preferable to stopping feeding.
