Adopting A Baby Process: How To Get Started!

Private domestic adoptions today are modern and progressive, beginning with the birth parents choosing to place their child for adoption, usually out of love for the child. A birth mother can create her adoption plan and select the family that she wishes to adopt her baby. In most cases, the adoptive parents are present for the birth of their child. Birth parents then place the baby directly with the adoptive family at the hospital and sign adoption consents that become irrevocable within days of the placement.

AdoptHelp is a premier adoption law firm, specializing in the placement of newborns. Our private infant adoption program provides professional, quality, and ethical adoption services to adoptive parents and birth mothers nationwide. For hopeful adoptive parents, AdoptHelp provides:

  • Birth mother outreach and screening to find the birth mother and child who are right for you
  • Experienced case workers to guide you through the process and create a personalized adoption plan specific to your case
  • Adoption and legal services throughout the time you are matched with a birth mother, during the birth and signing of consent documents, to prepare all legal paperwork through finalization, and assist in post placement support

How To Adopt A Baby

While no adoption process is ever quite the same, there are several steps that must be followed in order to safely and legally adopt an infant in the United States:

1. Find a professional

Its important to select an adoption professional that provides all of the services you need to complete your adoption, whether it is a full-service adoption agency or an adoption attorney to legally complete your adoption.

  • National Agencies Domestic infant adoption agencies provide matching, advertising, guidance, and other services to families and birth mothers all across the country.
  • Regional Agencies Unlike national agencies, regional agencies specialize in a particular area, which is good for families who want to adopt closer to home.
  • Adoption Law Firms Legally, you only need an adoption attorney to complete the process of adopting a newborn. However, they do not have the same matching and support services that agencies have.
  • Adoption Law Centers and Facilitators Providing little more than matching services, law centers and facilitators often pass adoptive families on to other adoption professionals once they find a match with a birth mother.

Each type of adoption professional has advantages and disadvantages, so take the time to carefully consider which option is best for your situation.

2. Complete a Home Study

A home study is required for all forms of adoption. This will include an evaluation of documents as well as a home inspection and interview.

3. Find a Birth Mother

Putting the best interests of the child first, including arranging for access to ongoing information about themselves, their medical histories and other aspects of their families of origin.

Providing all of the childs parents with the opportunity to know and respect each another, to appreciate the value of ongoing communications, and to build successful relationships.

Creating an adoption plan in which all the childs parents participate and have their needs addressed, and in which adoption is understood as a lifelong journey for everyone.

Can The Birth Father Block The Adoption

How Much does it Cost to Adopt a Child?

A birth father who has parental responsibility for the child must agree to the adoption before it can be finalised. Usually, a father will have parental responsibility if they are married to the birth mother, their name is on the birth certificate, or they made a parental responsibility agreement with the birth mother.

If the birth father has parental responsibility and does not want to consent to the adoption, it may still be possible to proceed if the court believes that it is in the best interests of the child to be adopted by you. However, you will likely need to go to court and the process could be long and expensive it is possible for the child to live with you while court proceedings are ongoing.

Jacqui Hunt Agency Adoption

When Jacqui Hunt was 18 and living in California, she gave birth to a baby boy and placed him for adoption. I just wasnt prepared to be a single parent at that point in my life, Hunt, now 53, said. Its not something my family, or society, would have accepted at the time.

Over 30 years later, she is happily embracing parenthood on her own this time as an adoptive parent herself in New York City. Ive kind of come full circle on the issue, she said.

Like many parents by way of adoption, Hunt spent many years trying, and failing, to conceive.

Eventually, she turned to adoption, looking first into the foster care system. She quickly learned, however, that New York was among the 25 states requiring foster parents to provide any child older than an infant which represent the overwhelming majority of those in foster care with their own bedroom. To qualify, shed need to move from her studio apartment, in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, to a larger unit.

For Hunt, a public school teacher, a two-bedroom apartment in New York where the average rent for a two-bedroom is $3,390, according to the real estate site Zumper was cost prohibitive. Though a private adoption would be more expensive, Hunt reasoned that it would still be cheaper in the end since she could remain in her more affordable apartment for the foreseeable future.

It was a tumultuous path that got me here, but I dont regret a thing, she said. My daughter is the joy of my life.

How Possible Is Not Entirely Impossible

Here at the Adoption Network Law Center, we see many families and individuals specify a preference for a boy or a girl and proceed with successful adoptions. Ultimately though, like much of the adoption process, it may come down to circumstance and commitment. So while the sex of a child cannot be entirely guaranteed, parents and professionals are now able to work together to heavily consider preference.

Submitting An Application To Adopt In New York State

How Many Newborn Babies Are Up For Adoption

After choosing an agency, you must submit an application to adopt. This application seeks information on your background, family composition, and the number of people living in your home. You will need to describe the type of child you feel most suited to adopt, and the agency can help you with this description. This information is necessary to ensure that each child is placed with the family most able to meet the child’s needs.

When families apply to adopt, agencies must check with the New York State Child Abuse and Maltreatment Register to determine whether an applicant, or any person over the age of 18 who resides in the home, has previously abused or maltreated a child. Also, a criminal history check for a prospective adoptive parent or any other person over the age of 18, who is currently residing in the home is required. A criminal record does not necessarily prevent an applicant from adopting. Every effort is made to ensure that children are placed in safe environments.

Is It Cheaper To Have A Baby Or Adopt

    adopting a baby…

Although adoption can be cheaper than birthing a child, your costs could come without the guarantee of having a healthy baby. You may also be responsible for the cost of feeding and caring for your baby, as well as other expenses, such as clothing, toys, diapers, and other items. Adoption costs can vary greatly depending on the type of adoption you are considering.

In some cases, adoption costs may be as low as $500, while in others, they can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The following are some of the costs associated with adopting a baby from a foster home: Adopting a Baby From a Foster Home: This is the most expensive adoption option, but it is also the least likely to result in a happy and healthy child.

Will You Be Unable To Adopt If You Have A History Of Depression

Prospective adoptive parents are concerned that their application to adopt will be turned down because they have a history of depression.

Several readers responded to the question:Are there countries that restrict prospective parents from adopting if they have a history of depression?

Gary Dodd, a nurse-practitioner in Ontario, Canada, writes:

It is true that if you have had any type or form of mental illness or there is a family member with a mental or medical illness, this can lead to a rejection of your application for adoption. Our child protective services here in Ontario have strict guidelines that they follow for adopting a child or for fostering children.

As a previous foster parent, I can remember the child protection workers asking both my wife and I, if either of us had or was experiencing sign or symptoms of depression or if we were presently being treated for any psychiatric disorder i.e. Bipolar-Schizo- Affective Disorder or any medical disorder like sleep apnea or diabetes. They also wanted to know about any histories of abuse, drinking or use of illegal drugs.

I believe that once you notify the child care governing body about any mental illness that you or you family member has had in the past, there is a stigma associated with labeling those people as having a mental illness for life.

    Pickel writes:

Regarding the issue of post-adoption depression, I recommend a great book called, The Post-Adoption Blues, by Karen Foli and John Thompson.
