The Child Tax Credit was signed into law by President Joe Biden as part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, designed to help the United States rebound from the coronavirus pandemic. The Plain Dealer

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Just because your child has yet to celebrate a first birthday in 2021 doesnt mean youre ineligible for the expanded 2021 Child Tax Credit.

Millions of Americans will receive three more payments this year from the federal government as part of the expanded 2021 Child Tax Credit — and that includes parents of newborns.

In the past, parents would have to wait until they filed their income taxes to claim a $2,000 child tax credit in one lump sum. But this year, parents can receive $3,600 for children under 6 years old and $3,000 for kids between ages 6 and 17. The expanded credit has also started to arrive in monthly payments in qualifying families bank accounts each month.

But if you have a newborn, you obviously could not have claimed the child on your tax return last year. So youll have to take a few extra steps to obtain your refund.

HOW TO GET YOUR CREDIT

The Child Tax Credit Update Portal allows parents to verify all their information is correct, check payment status and gives them the option to opt-out of monthly payouts.

Coming to the portal soon will be the option to report any changes in status that are different from the latest tax return the IRS has on file . And that includes babies born or adopted in 2021.

Verifying Eligibility For Advance Payments

Question: I think I qualify for monthly payments of the child tax credit, but I want to be sure that I am automatically enrolled in the IRS’s system. Is there a way to check this?

Answer: Yes, you can do this online using the IRS’s Child Tax Credit Update Portal. Once you have gone through all the steps to create an account and log on, you will be able to verify your eligibility for monthly payments and check on the status of those payments.

If the tool says a payment was issued, but you haven’t received it, then you can fill out IRS Form 3911 and send it to the IRS to start a payment trace. You’ll have to wait at least five days from the anticipated direct deposit date and at least four weeks for mailed checks before the IRS can begin a trace on any missing payment.

What If I Dont Have A Permanent Address

You can receive monthly Child Tax Credit payments even if you dont have a permanent address. You can list a trusted address where you would like to temporarily receive your monthly checks, such as the address of a friend, relative, or trusted service provider like a shelter, drop-in day center, or transitional housing program.

Child Tax Credit 2021: Advance Payment FAQs And How To Qualify

Question: My child doesn’t have a social security number. Can I claim the child credit or get advance payments?

Answer: No. The American Rescue Plan didn’t eliminate the requirement that only children with Social Security numbers qualify for the child credit. You must put your child’s name, date of birth and Social Security number on your 2021 Form 1040.

Although children must have Social Security numbers, you can have either a Social Security number or an individual taxpayer identification number.
