But what about the children of unmarried couples, or babies whose fathers are not known? Can an unmarried or single mother apply for her childs birth certificate?

The answer to this question is yes. Thanks to a new law that came into effect in October 2022, a single mother can now register her childs birth, regardless of her marital status, and whether or not the childs father is known. In this article, lets take a look at how to apply for the birth certificate of children with unknown fathers.

What If I Havent Received My Childs Social Security Card

Figure out your states approximate processing time for SSN applications for newborns, since it varies based on where you live. If you still havent received your babys card in the mail after the indicated length of time , you have two options:

• Visit your local SSA Office.

Depending on your application status, someone at your local SSA office or an official on the hotline could ask you to refile your application you can do so at ssa.gov. Keep in mind that you cant apply via phone or mail, so if youre asked to do this, report this immediately and consider it fraud.

Also, applying for a SSN and a Social Security card is free, so dont be tricked by scammers who may be trying to charge you a fee for your application.

What Do I Need To Provide

To order a birth certificate, noncertified informational copy of a birth record, and Heirloom birth certificate, you must provide:

• First, middle, and last name of the subject of the record.
• Date of birth .
• City or county of birth.
• First and last names of all parents that are listed on the record.

What Types Of Birth Certifications Are Issued

A computer-generated long form is the only version of birth certificate issued. Under South Carolina regulation, it is considered for all purposes the same as the original certificate.

The computer-generated long form contains the following information:

• State file number
• Father’s place of birth
• The date issued.

Vital Records Offices stopped accepting requests for short form birth certificates in January 2015.A computer-generated long form can be issued by the state office location – DHEC, 2600 Bull Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201 and by Regional Vital Records Offices .

Get A Personal Copy Of Your Babys Certificate Of Live Birth

As soon as your babys documents and medical records reach the local civil registrar, you will be notified by the hospital when the personal copy of your childs Certificate of Live Birth is ready for pickup.

Whats the difference between the Certificate of Live Birth and the Birth Certificate issued by the PSA?

Whereas the COLB declares that the baby is alive at the time of birth, the birth certificate is the official record showing your babys date and place of birth.

Unmarried Mothers Can Register Their Newborns

Recently, in October 2022, a new law was passed, allowing an unmarried mother to register her childs birth even if the father is unknown. The process involves filling out a specific form. The mother also needs to prove the birth, as well as declare that the childs father is not known.

The new law was issued by the President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, under Decree Number 10-2022, which regulates the registry of births and deaths in the UAE.

Notably, the law marks the first time that an Arab country recognises the right of unmarried and single mothers to register their newborn children. Ultimately, it looks at the best interests of the child, regardless of the status of his/her parents. Without a birth certificate, the child would not be able to receive healthcare or go to school.

What Identification Is Required

A photocopy of a valid government issued photo ID by either the applicant or an individual attesting for the applicant is required for issuance of certificates.

If you are mailing your application – Send a photocopy. Do not send your original ID. Photocopies must be legible.Primary Identification – NEED ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

• U.S. Issued Drivers license or Identification card
• Foreign Issued Passport with Visa

• 2 Passport Photos that are : 2 x 2 inches in size, identical, taken within the past 6 months, showing full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background. Do not wear a hat or a headgear.
• Proof of US Citizenship such as original copy of your childs birth certificate or naturalization certificate. The birth certificate will also prove relationship of the child to the parents as it carries the parents names.
• Copy of your childs Social Security Number. .
• Proof of Identity of both the parents such as Drivers License or passport etc.
• Passport fee and processing fee.

How To Get Birth Certificate For Newborn Babies Born At Home

Home birth or the traditional method of giving birth at home was and still is being practiced in the Philippines despite the modern advances in medicine.

For some mothers, the comfort and familiarity of their homes cant compare to the cold, intimidating ambiance of the hospital delivery rooms.

Others, especially the impoverished women in the provinces, resort to home birth for a lack of better option.

If the baby was born at home with the help of a midwife or manghihilot, a different set of procedure and requirements will be followed.

Since the mother didnt give birth in the hospital, the responsibility of registering the birth of the child now goes to the mother or the midwife/manghihilot who helped with the childbirth.

According to Sec. 2 of the Presidential Decree 651, the mother or the midwife/manghihilot must register the babys birth with the local civil registrar within 30 days from the date of delivery. Failure to do so will result in late registration of birth.

The parent/s will be required to fill out the Certificate of Live Birth Form and obtain a copy of it from the local civil registrar.

To be issued the birth certificate, the parent/s of the baby must first submit or comply with the following requirements:

Homeless Youth Birth Certificates

A homeless youth birth certificate is an official legal document. It expires six months from the date issued. You may request this certificate at no cost from any Minnesota vital records office if you are homeless, 24 years old or younger, and born in Minnesota.

You must complete the Homeless Youth Birth Certificate Application and provide identification. You may provide acceptable identification or submit a Statement to Identify or an original or a copy of a signed Affidavit of Homeless Status form. The Affidavit of Homeless Status is valid for six months after it is signed.

How To Get Birth Certificate For Newborn Babies Born In The Hospital Or Maternity Clinic

The fee for the search of a birth certificate is $15.00 and will include the issuance of one certified copy to a qualified applicant if the certificate is on file. Additional copies will be issued at a cost of $15.00 each. The searching fee is not refundable or transferable. All fees expire one year from the receipt date. Online and phone orders are subject to a an additional service fee.

Registering The Birth Of A Child Born At Home

If your child is born at home in Wake County, your childs birth must be registered by someone who was at the birth. . If a licensed midwife was at the birth, she will register the child’s birth. If not, any of the following people who were present during the birth can register the child’s birth:

• The childs father,
• Another relative of the child, or
• Any other person who was at the childs birth.

Who Will Issue A Birth Certificate For Your Child And Where

In India, under the rule of Section 7 of the RBD Act, there is a Registrar deployed by the Government in each local Municipal Corporation called the Nagar Nigam. If it is a smaller region or district, usually a local authority or the Panchayat would be given this responsibility. The rule of Section 7 of the Act directs to appoint a Sub-registrar as well, who would enjoy the same rights and power as the Registrar. This is who mainly can issue your childs birth certificate.

Please keep the Confirmation of Birth letter in a safe place, as it cannot be replaced. You should make additional copies of the letter for insurance providers, Medicaid and other agencies who need proof of birth.

The hospital does not issue birth certificates. To acquire a certified copy of your childs birth certificate, complete the Confirmation of Birth letter and mail, along with a $25 check or money order, to:
