How To Ease Gas Pain In Newborn

Make Your Baby Burp Correctly How To Help Newborn With Gas:

How to Relieve Infant Gas Pain

You can try making your baby burp at the right time. The digestive system of babies is weak and still developing. So, it is better not to skip burping and make your baby burp at least twice. This means that you should try to have your baby have a burp in the middle of your feeding session.

  • If you are feeding continuously to your baby for at least 5-10 minutes, try making your baby burp at least once.
  • Be sure to follow the different positions for burping and make sure that your baby releases gas while having the burp.
  • Do not try to burp your baby frequently since the nursing baby can swallow air if you are breastfeeding your baby.
  • Try to note that a baby with a lot of gas tries to burp more than usual.

How Can You Identify Whether The Pain Is Due To Gas Or Something Else

When an adult goes through gas pain, it can lead to uncomfortableness in the stomach. The stress arises if the pain shifts to the lungs and the chest hurts because of the gas. However, the babies cannot explain the cause of the gas, so they only scream and cry if something is wrong with their bodies. Babies can cry for many reasons, and just like adults and children, they do face gas problems. In healthy babies, gas may develop because swallowing air can produce stress.

  • Babies have somewhat immature immune systems and digestive systems. This means that they are still in the developing stage and could only show signs of crying.
  • The result can be uncomfortable for the baby. However, the gas can happen at any stage. It is common in babies within 3 months of life. Gas can subsides with time.
  • Babies are born with extra sensitivity and can become uncomfortable with time. This may occur during breastfeeding or while you are trying to burp the baby. As a result, your baby can go through gas, which often becomes hectic to nurse for anyone.

When Should I Contact A Health Care Provider

Gas is common with infants. Reach out to your babys provider with any concerns about your babys increased fussiness to see if there could be additional causes for their excessive gas, including constipation, cows milk protein allergy or acid reflux.

Baby Gas Pain: Reasons and Home Remedies

Some research has found that the foods in a mom’s diet might make breastfed babies gassy, but the evidence is far from conclusive. Before you completely revamp what you’re eating, see if there are other subtle ways you can help your baby swallow less air at mealtimes, including working on your latch, burping baby twice at each feeding and trying different nipples or bottles if you pump.

If your breastfed baby is still gassy, and you notice that every time you eat a certain food he seems gassier or fussier than usual, theres no harm in cutting that food from your diet to see if it helps. Work with your doctor to nail down foods that might make breastfed babies gassy, including:

Which Medications Can You Safely Give Your Newborn For Gas

Over-the-counter gas drops given to a baby for gases contain simethicone, a medicine designed to relieve excess gas in the stomach and intestines. Simethicone is generally a safe medication for most babies.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it in 1952. Simethicone may cause loose stools in some babies. A typical dose for simethicone is 20 milligrams, up to four times a day. The FDA advises against using gripe water for treating colic or flatulence in babies.

What Does It Mean If My Baby Is Gassy

Simply put, a gassy baby is a typical baby.

The digestive systems of new borns and babies under the age of six months are still developing. This means that food may not always be fully broken down, resulting in gas and/or trapped air in the stomach and/or intestines. Babies’ tummies are so little that excess air can readily fill them up, causing pain and pressure.

What’s the good news? Usually, the soreness is just temporary. It dissipates, just like gas.

How To Help Your Baby Feel Better

Try these steps to prevent and ease the pain of gas:

Check feeding position. “When you’re nursing or bottle-feeding, try to keep the baby’s head higher than her stomach,” Shu says. “That way, the milk sinks to the bottom of the stomach and air goes to the top, and it’s easier to burp out.” Tip the bottle up slightly so there are no air bubbles in the nipple, and use a nursing pillow for support.

Burp your baby. One of the easiest ways to ease gas pains is to burp them during and after they nurse. If they don’t belch right away, lay them down on their back for a few minutes and then try again.

Change equipment. “If you’re bottle-feeding, switch to a slower-flow nipple,” says Joel Lavine, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University.

Work it out. Gently massage your baby, pump their legs back and forth while they are on their back, or give their tummy time . A warm bath can also help them get rid of extra gas.

Take a closer look at foods. Talk with your baby’s doctor about foods that may give them extra gas. “Some parents give infants fruit juice, which contains sorbitols that the baby can’t absorb,” Lavine says. The doctor will also make sure you don’t cut out nutrients your baby needs.

If you breastfeed, your baby could have trouble digesting some of the foods that you eat, which can come through your breast milk, like dairy products and caffeine. If you give their formula, talk to your doctor about switching brands. Some claim to be helpful for gassy babies.

Gassy Babies And Sleep

While the best sleep position for a gassy baby is still on their back, sometimes, gas pains make it harder for your little one to sleep. If this is the case, you may find that swaddling your baby before bedtime will keep them warm and comfortable during the night, as well as reduce any discomfort.

If your baby has fallen asleep while nursing, you’re likely to face the following dilemma: You want to burp your baby before putting them down to avoid any gas bubbles, but you don’t want to rouse them from their sleep.

If this is the case, use the following strategies to help release any trapped air before laying your baby down on their back:

  • Prop baby up Hold your baby semi-upright against your chest, so that their head can rest on your shoulder. Your body should provide enough pressure on their tummy to encourage a burp.
  • Rock baby back and forth Place their belly down over your arm so that their legs dangle on either side and their head is supported in the crook of your elbow. Then, gently move your arm from side to side while you pat their back.
  • Lay baby down Lay your baby belly down over your lap so that their stomach is on your knees. Then, rock them by moving your legs side to side and gently rubbing their back.

Does Diet Cause Gas In Breastfeeding Babies

Some babies dont tolerate typical formula. In those cases, a specialized formula that contains different proteins or carbohydrates may work better. These products often say something like, May help with gas, fussiness or colic, on their packaging. If youre breastfeeding, you may have heard that what you eat affects your breastmilk and that certain foods should be avoided. Proper nutrition is important when breastfeeding. Scientific research, however, hasnt conclusively proven a link between your diet and gas or other discomforts for your baby.

When breastfeeding, some people benefit from cutting back on gas-causing foods or dairy products. This can be especially helpful if theyre feeling gassy themselves. Dr. Sniderman says if it works for you, great, but she doesnt suggest a restrictive diet for most people who are breastfeeding.

Some people will come up with a long list of foods you should cut out of your diet if you have a gassy baby, Dr. Sniderman notes. Thats a lot to ask of someone whos probably already stressed and taking care of a new baby. When youre breastfeeding, you need to eat a lot. You literally have to eat enough to feed you and the baby. So, I am usually not of the camp that eliminates a lot of things from a breastfeeding diet.

How Does A Babys Diet Affect Gas

How To Relieve Gas and Colic In Babies and Infants Instantly

Breast milk is the biological standard of food for babies, and it is usually the healthiest choice when possible. There is no need to stop breastfeeding because a baby has gas.

Infant formula may also cause gas. Mixing up infant formula can cause air bubbles to appear in a babys food, increasing the risk of gas. Try a premixed liquid formula instead, or give the formula a few minutes to settle before feeding the baby.

Some babies may be sensitive to formula ingredients, such as soy or lactose. However, lactose intolerance is very rare in infants and is often temporary. Babies born prematurely may have developmental lactase deficiency, a condition that lasts for only a short time.

A 2015 study of almost 300 infants found that lactose-free milk-based or soy-based formulas did not alleviate infants fussiness or crying.

A person should talk with a pediatrician before changing their babys formula.

When a baby starts eating solids, keeping a food log can help with identifying food sensitivities that trigger gas.

It would really help mom if the baby can talk, but they cant!! Crying is the only sign they use to communicate when there is something wrong with them.

Should Baby Formula Always Be Warm

Baby Gas Pain: Reasons and Home Remedies

There is no health reason to warm formula, so if youre weary or its the middle of the night, know that room-temperature bottles are perfectly fine. But if you do want to warm a bottle, heat it in a bowl of warm water, run warm water over it or use a bottle warmer.

Never microwave a formula bottle, which can create hot spots that could burn a babys mouth or throat, and always check the temp on the inside of your wrist before serving it.

Common Latching Problems And Solutions

Having trouble breastfeeding? Here’s how to fix a couple of the most common latching problems:

  • Poor positioning. Don’t hunch over your baby and push your breast into her mouth. Instead, try bringing your baby to you.
  • Baby’s body is out of line. Make sure your babys head and body are facing you, so she can focus squarely on the task at hand.
  • Baby’s body is too far away. Mealtime is impossible if your nipple is out of reach.
  • An empty breast. Your baby may not latch because little or nothing comes out when she sucks.
  • Flat or inverted nipples. It can be more difficult, but not impossible, for a baby to latch on.
