How Can I Tell If A Newborn Is Sleeping Too Much

A baby occasionally sleeping for longer than usual is not a cause for concern unless there are other symptoms.

In general, it is uncommon for a newborn to consistently sleep through feedings or to sleep for longer than 19 hours per day unless they are ill or are having feeding difficulties.

Some of the most common reasons that healthy babies sleep for longer than usual include the following:

  • They may experience a growth spurt or developmental leap.

    Keep Baby Awake During Feedings

    Keeping sleepy babies awake for feedings is very hard, but worth it. It allows for full feedings. It also prevents napping during feeding time.

    Some simple tips to help with this is to switch breasts if breastfeeding and changing babys diaper in the middle of the feed. If bottle feeding, you can switch positions to rouse baby. A cool washcloth can also be helpful.

    What happens after the feeding is over will depend on where you are in your efforts.

    WEEK ONE:Your baby is 0-1 week old. During week one, dont even worry about it. Let her sleep, and you in turn sleep as much as you can. Even my non-sleeper son was very sleepy this first week.

    Babywise says during week one to simply focus on establishing nursing . It also says to not even pay attention to the clock, so just take this week to focus on yourself getting all the rest you can.

    Fill Up During The Day

    Offer your baby regular feeds during the day every 3 hours or less even if it means waking her up. Some babies will naturally do a 4 hour sleep stretch somewhere in a 24 hour period, just dont let her do it during the day!

    You can gently wake your baby by picking her up, unswaddling her , or removing some of her clothing, stroking or tickling her arms and legs, or go straight to changing her diaper. Shell still need to feed during the night but hopefully shell start to stretch out her feeds when its dark

    When thinking about the day you may realize that times between feedings were stretched out to accommodate a busier schedule, or that your baby was distracted and didnt ask for milk as often. This is one reason why newborns wake up at night.

    Switching From Crib To Big

    “This is a classic mistake parents make,” says Faure. “Do not move your baby until he can climb out of the crib on his own. In that case, he is a danger to himself and must be moved into a bed. Otherwise, let him sleep in his crib until he’s around two years old, when most toddlers are ready for a bed. A crib’s sides provide a very useful barrier at a time when your baby cannot understand or obey verbal boundaries .”

    If you are ready to transition your toddler to a crib, West says there are two approaches:

    The Cold Turkey Method

    Simply remove the crib and replace it with the new bed. Just be sure to have guard rails on both sides .

    The Gradual Approach

    Start by leaving the crib rail down, with a stool at the side so your child can get out by themselves, and some pillows near the bed in case they fall out. “If you can fit the new bed and the crib in the same room, you can start with reading books on the bed or have her nap in the bed,” explains West. “Then pick the big night where she sleeps in the bed at night. Once she’s sleeping in her bed for naps and nights, you can remove the crib.”
