How To Get Your Newborn On A Schedule

How To Get Your Newborn On A Schedule

How do you get your baby on a sleep schedule?

Im going back to work in 2 months, how can I get my newborn on a schedule and sleeping through the night by then?!

The new mom sounded frantic on the phone, desperate for some good news.

The answer I gave her was a little more diplomatic that what Im about to tell you, but the short of it is, you most likely cant. And thats ok and very normal!

Newborns have very erratic sleep patterns, and need large amounts of sleep per day . They arent yet producing their own melatonin, have a hard time settling to sleep, often catnap throughout the day, and need to be fed frequently during the night because their tummies are very small. At the beginning especially breastfed babies may need to nurse more regularly , as breast-milk is digested more quickly than formula.

So did I just leave this mama hanging?! No!

Is there anything that you can do to at least encourage longer stretches of sleep and a regular day rhythm?

YES!!

Below youll find my 5 top tips for navigating the newborn age and setting your little one up for healthy long-term sleep habits.

What Time Should A 2 Month Old Go To Bed

Its common for bedtimes to still be pretty late at this age . Your babys bedtime will be determined by the time they woke up in the morning and how many naps they took that day. Once your babys internal clock is fully developed, which happens between 3 and 4 months of age, bedtime tends to gravitate earlier.

A Bedtime Routine To Complement Your Baby Schedule

Most babies are very receptive to a bedtime routine at around 6 to 8 weeks. Establishing a bedtime routine for your new baby helps to calm them and ease them into a good nights sleep. Follow the same reassuring sample baby routine every night:

  • Dim the lights. Exposure to bright light in the hour or so before night-night makes falling asleep more difficult.

  • Play soft white noise in the background. White noise is not bird sounds, waves, or lullabies. White noise is continuous, monotonous, and low pitch. And the ideal white noise mimics the loud rumbly sounds Baby heard in the womb.

  • Offer a toasty bath. A babys body temperature drops a few degrees post-bath, which signals the body that its time for night-night.

  • Give a loving massage.Research shows that baby massage can improve the quality of baby sleepeven more so for a little one who has poor sleep quality. I like to use warm massage oil, too, like coconut, grapeseed oil, or safflower oil. Warm the oil by leaving it at room temperature and rubbing your hands together.

  • Swaddle your baby. I like to swaddle babies before a feed, but some babies prefer to be swaddled afterwardso see which works best for you! Either way, swaddling is an important S in the 5 Ss that helps bring on sleep.

  • Feed your baby. Babies are designed to snooze after drinking yummy milk!

  • Within a week, this bedtime routine will begin to work like hypnosis. Soon, youll find that both you and your baby will be getting more sleep!

How To Stop Cluster Feeding At Night

    Account Suspended

    Whew.

Aint no mama want to be up every hour at night. The good news is you dont have to be.

Even if you are feeding every hour through the night, you can shift that and begin getting longer stretches at night.

Whats the only way to stop cluster feeding at night?

Make sure baby is getting as much milk as they can throughout the day.

Dont let baby snack while nursing. 10 minute feeds throughout the day mean baby will be up all night because baby is hungry and needs milk.

When you start giving baby full feeds throughout the day and baby settles into a predictable routine then theyll sleep longer stretches at night.

When Should Babies Start Sleeping Through The Night

Some babies begin sleeping through the night around six months of age. At six months, about 62% of babies sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours. By the time they reach one year, about 71% of babies sleep uninterrupted for at least 6 hours at night.

Infants three months and younger generally dont sleep throughout the night without waking up to be fed. Parents shouldnt be concerned if their baby doesnt sleep throughout the night without waking up, even if the baby is a year old.

Understanding Newborn Needs: Sleep Feeds And Play

The first few months of your babys life is the time to get to know your baby and learn about your babys needs for sleep, feeds, play and settling.

Most newborns spend most of their time asleep they sleep 14-17 hours in every 24 hours. Its common for newborns to sleep in short bursts of 2-3 hours between feeds, both night and day.

Also, newborns need to feed every 2-4 hours. And they need your attention during the day and night.

Newborn play might just be a quiet cuddle or some time stretching out and kicking on a blanket. You might find about 10-20 minutes of play is enough. Some newborns are happy to play for longer than this.

You might find that a very simple, flexible routine seems to help your baby and also helps you feel more in control. But this isnt the time to worry about getting your baby into any kind of rigid routine.

Newborns often need help to settle to sleep. You can use responsive settling to help your baby fall asleep.

    Whats Important In This Schedule

    • Trying to get your baby back to sleep within 1 hour of being awake during the day
    • Intentionally feeding both sides every 3 hours during the day
    • Trying to feed on wake up rather than putting down to sleep
    • Trying to get naps to be 45 minutes or more
    • Witching period of fussy baby from 6-10 pm is real
    • Baby is tired and your milk supply is lower so you have competing needs of tired and hungry = fussy
    • Trying to get 15 – 18 hours of total sleep in 24 hours

How Do I Incorporate Breastfeeding Or Bottle

How do you get your baby on a schedule?

Even though your baby is now slurping purées from a spoon , the bulk of her nutrition will still come from breast milk or formula. Consider the solids you serve at first as healthy supplements and a chance for your sweetie to explore new tastes and textures.

When should you bring out a bottle or your breast, and when should you dish out solids? Theres really no set rule. Some parents find that an appetizer of breast milk or formula is a good way to start off a meal, so their little ones arent too hungry to settle down to eat.

Other parents offer solids as a first course and breast milk or formula for dessert. Then there are moms who like to completely separate solids from nursing or bottle-feeding sessions.

Since theres no hard and fast rule, experiment until you find a feeding schedule that works for you.

Baby On A Schedule Goal #: Teach Night And Day

Our second goal to work towards is to teach your infant between day and night. A good 2 month old sleep schedule will include lessons to help him learn the difference as quickly as possible.

    • Whenever he is going to sleep, it is officially night.
    • Whenever he is going to be awake and play, it is officially day

When you pick him up for the morning feeding, welcome him with a bright smile. Throw back the window shades, whistle a Mary Poppins duet with windowsill birds, or any other happy morning activities.

You want him to associate day with a brightness, noise, and swift movements. Then, when you start seeing his sleepy cues for a nap , shut the shades, talk softly, sing quietly, and move slowly.

Btw, dark sleeptime, means pitch black. Either put sheets on the windows or grab some good travel blackout curtains. A dark room is a HUGE step in helping your baby be a champion sleeper! Dont make the common sleep training mistake of having a cute nursery thats utterly sleep dysfunctional. That rooms purpose is for SLEEPING. Forget that to your bleary-eyed peril.

When Can You Get Baby On A Sleep Schedule

When your baby is about 2 months old, her internal clock will become a bit more predictable and you can try implementing a basic newborn sleep schedule.

Between 3 and 6 months, your babys bedtime, naptime and wake times will increasingly happen around the same times each day. You’ll learn to anticipate your baby’s natural sleepy times and work toward putting her down while she’s drowsy but still awake, teaching her the valuable life skill of how to fall asleep on her own.

Keep in mind that baby sleep training in any form should wait until your baby is at least 4 to 6 months old, if you decide to do it at all. Your pediatrician will tell you when your baby is physically and developmentally ready.

    The Dangers Of Habituating

Habituating is a term The Sleep Ladyuses to describe when a newborn is fake napping.

Basically, your infant is verging on the brink of overstimulation, and so shuts down. She looks like shes sleeping, but really shes trying to self-soothe. Its common for babies until they are 6-8 weeks old.

How do you know if your newborn is habituating? She will wake fussy and irritable, like she hardly slept at all.

If your newborn cant find quiet tranquility during the day , she will seek it at night. This means shell be alert and ready for play when you want to be unconscious on a pillow.

Your best defense is an offense: prevent the need for her to habituate in the first place. So try your darndest in those first four weeks to keep your baby isolated from the bright and noisy Captain O. Get a good noisemaker to drown out active siblings. Stay home as much as possible.

    Reasons Newborn Babies Cry

The Newborn Nap Schedule You’ve Been Searching For!
    • They are hungry and need to feed
    • They are tired and need to nap. Essentially newborns nap between each feeding. If baby has been up more than 1.5 hours then they are tired, and likely overtired.
    • They are physicallyuncomfortable. Baby may have a wet diaper, dirty diaper or be too hot or cold. Generally, newborns need about one more layer than we do!
    • They have reflux and its uncomfortable. You will see your pediatrician, of course, for this, then use the information here to keep baby as comfortable as possible until they outgrow this.
    • They have colic and/or are letting off steam. Newborns dont usually develop colic until around 6 weeks or so, but some crying is normal with newborns. Its the only way they can communicate. Our job is not to stop their crying as quickly as humanly possible, but to learn to decipher their cries so we can meet their needs appropriately and promptly.

What Time Should A 1 Month Old Go To Bed

Your baby may have a very late bedtime at this age. Since a newborns schedule is irregular at this stage of development, dont be surprised if the longest stretch of sleep starts at 10:00 PM or even much later. A one month olds sleep schedule will often be on the later side. However, by 3-4 months of age, most babies will be ready for an earlier bedtime.

The Fact Of The Matter Is

Babies go to sleep better and sleep longer when they are calm, settled, and in a good routine. It doesnt have to be a huge thing with church bells and four part harmony.

The more you are able to protect your babys sleep, create a good wind-down routine, and make it a regular part of your evening, the better your whole family will sleep.

To recap, to help your babies sleep better at night you want to:

    • Choose an appropriate bedtime
    • Give your baby a calming bath or wipe down
    • Before putting on a clean diaper and swaddle, give your baby a rubdown or massage with nice calming lotions
    • Have some quiet quality time to help get your baby very drowsy before putting him into the crib.

Create sustainable sleep habits for your little lamb so the whole family can sleep peacefully without the stress, drama, and tears.

Week Old Sleep Schedule / 3 Month Old Sleep Schedule Development And Sleep Patterns

Your newborns sleep patterns have likely changed significantly from a few weeks ago. 12-week-olds are starting to approach the time when we start to see newborn sleep problems if you havent seen them up to this point. Naps sometimes get shorter and it may be harder to stick to your schedule or eat-play-sleep routine. Your baby still needs 11-12 hours of sleep at night and 3-4 hours during the day, but the total average sleep is right around 14 hours. Of course, by definition, some babies will need more and some will need less. If your baby needs less, developing a 3-month-old schedule is usually more difficult. Ideally, youd keep your baby awake no longer than two hours at a time otherwise, your 3 month old might be very fussy.

Here is what a typical 12 week old sleep schedule looks like, though not always predictable just yet:
