Aside from posed and a few lifestyle shots, the other big to do in my mental shot list is macro work. I love to capture close-ups of the babys toes, little bits of babys hair on their shoulder, pouty lips, & ears, etc
These close-up detail shots are not only adorable but they are great accompanying images for albums and accordion books. Because of the sensitive focus on a macro lens, the best moment to get these images is when the baby is very still .
As shown with the newborn workshop where you get to shadow me on an actual on-location session, when I notice the baby is deep in dreamland, Ill just stop whatever Im doing and Ill pull out my macro for 10 minutes and get all the shots that I need.

The best way to edit images into stunning captures is to make sure you get as close as you can with the photograph. You cant fix an angle problem in Lightroom.
Try to capture a well-framed scene in-camera. This will give you great photographs and will cut down your editing time.
Newborns are soft and cuddly, so the images should reflect this tone and mood.
To generate smooth, creamy skin tones, use the contrast and clarity sliders. You can find these in Adobe Lightroom.
Reducing the contrast creates this dreamy feeling and soft appearance.

Make Sure Your Room Is Fairly Neutral
Take care of the room interior when taking newborn pictures at home. The colors should not be too vivid because they may cast onto the object, creating an undesirable effect.
Pay attention to what you wear, especially when you come closer to the object while taking photos. Wear the clothes of neutral color and choose the room with white, beige or tan walls, if its possible. These tricks will simplify your further image editing work.

Using the natural light that shines in through a window is a great way to get soft light. This is an excellent light for an indoor subject. Window light is often overlooked and it costs nothing.
The effect of the window on the outdoor light is the same as that of a softbox on a flash. The intensity of the light lessens and the light becomes soft.
Done right, the effect can be very impressive and professional-looking. You are harnessing the power by moving the subject closer or further away from the window.

Newborn Poses: How To Minimise Fuss And Maximise Cuteness
Posing newborns can be a little daunting on your first try. They are all floppy and cant hold themselves well, if at all.
Move slowly, be confident and never put the baby in danger. Use the parents to hold the baby in different poses. Then Photoshop them out during the editing stage.
The back pose is one of the most common and the easiest to start with. Lay them on their back on soft material. Place their hands on their tummies.

What Is The Ideal Age For A Newborn Session
For traditional sessions, most photographers prefer for baby to be less than 10-14 days old because this is when they are the most flexible and sleep so deeply, making it easier to pose them.
Lifestyle sessions can happen when parents are ready, and because you arent worried about newborn posing, the timing of sessions is really up to you. I like working with newborns from two-six weeks old because they can hold eye contact with parents and with the camera at this time..
Let The Baby Inspire You
Whether it is the babys cute dimples, big beautiful eyes, full lips, or a great head of hair, try to highlight the beauty of the baby.
Be in the moment
Let the baby move, yawn, and stretch. Babies have wonderful, perfect, sweet movements, do not stress over having the perfect pose in every frame.
When you are posing, though, my top tip is to open up the babys fists. Sometimes its a bit of a struggle, but the babys relaxed hands will add a much more peaceful feel to the image.

Attend Newborn Photography Workshops
Attending a newborn photography workshop will give you so much hands on experience and knowledge than you had before! There are only so many newborn videos you can watch on you tube and while you can learn from these they are not the same. Posing a baby in different positions is hard work and you need to know how to do this correctly and safely. You can also learn so much about running a business, lighting and different newborn props. Its such a bonus and the number 1 thing I would say you should do. My first newborn photography workshop I attended was with Ana Brant and my first newborn session after her newborn workshop was a game changer, I had learnt so much!
What Other Costs Are Involved
Because safety is critical, you definitely want to invest in insurance coverage before you start working with clients and their babies.
There are a number of companies that offer policies for photographers and you may want to consider general liability and equipment coverage.
Youll also need a solid contract and photo release before you start working with clients. If you purchase a contract online, consider tailoring it to fit your business and have it reviewed by a local lawyer to give yourself peace of mind.
Instead of investing right away in props that you can buy any time, first devote time and money to your education as a newborn photographer by shadowing a pro and/or attending newborn photography workshops. It will save you so much time and effort versus trying to learn everything on your own!
Youll want to set aside a marketing budget, and keep in mind that word of mouth marketing will likely be what brings you additional clients. Parents are much more likely to recommend you if they loved the experience of working with you not just the photos themselves. This means you need to focus on not only delivering quality images, but working with baby and the family in a confident, friendly manner.

How Do I Market Newborn Photography
You are selling emotions. That is really the bottom line with newborns. The parents are melting with wonder and love at their new baby, and emotions are running their lives completely. If you can build a relationship with your clients that taps into their emotions, and leaves them feeling that you can truly relate to them and their baby, they will be more inclined to not only book you, but trust you.
Talk in a way that shows their baby means almost as much to you as he does them. Ask them lots of questions about their baby, and life since his arrival. New parents can talk all day about their baby, so showing he interests you will really endear you to them. Use emotive language on your site and Facebook page. Rather than saying I like doing baby shoots say I simply adore capturing images of beautiful, squishy babies!
Look after the parents when they are with you. Provide drinks and snacks, and comfortable seating. Mum will be sore and they are both likely to be exhausted.
Word of mouth is one of the best marketing tools in this genre. Mums talk, and will recommend you if they came away feeling that their baby was safe, respected and adored. The testimonials that will get you more bookings will not be the ones where mum says the pictures are good, but rather the ones where she gushes about how lovely the experience was while with you.

Create Visual Layers Through Lighting & Posing
It is absolutely great to divide photos into layers. Firstly, you determine the most meaningful objects and place them to the foreground of the picture.
