Keep A Calming Ambiance
Ambiance can be everything! Keep the room at a comfortable temperature, make sure it stays dark, and even try adding some white noise in there! The softest of sounds can disturb your baby at night, the white noise will provide a consistent, soothing sound for them to fall asleep to, and it will drown out any other noises happening around the house.
Understanding Baby Sleep Cycles
Adults have four sleep stages that they cycle through during the night. Newborn babies, between the ages of 0 to 3 months, only experience two of the four stages of sleep: stage 3 and stage 4.
- Stage 3: This stage is deep, regenerative sleep. Your body repairs and rejuvenates the immune system, muscle tissue, and sparks growth.
- Stage 4: Stage four is REM rapid eye movement sleep. Your brain kicks in to consolidate information and memories throughout the day. REM is when you dream.
Once asleep, your newborn can be put down without waking most of the time after you rock him because he jumps right into a deep sleep stage. Around four months old, babies transition through all four stages rather than just two sleep stages.
These cycles last 30 to 45 minutes each, on average, for your baby. So, naps can last for an hour to two hours as he cycles through the two stages.
Help With The Difference Between Night And Day
Theres no time too early to start with working on getting your baby to sleep easily on a night. In fact, the best time is during the newborn stage. This is the time that your baby starts to learn about routines and is able to take cues from you.
Your newborn is at a disadvantage right now. They dont know about the sleeping cycles and difference between night and day. Babies spend nine months growing in a place that is always dark. The night time is normal for them. Just think what it would be like for you after months in a dark space. The daytime would feel alien.
That doesnt mean you should stop your little one sleeping during the day. A newborn needs sleepplenty of it. In fact, babies need between 16 and 18 hours of sleep during the day. So, sleeping through the day and the night is good. Not allowing your little one to sleep during the day will just make it difficult to get them to sleep on a night.
What you need to do is help to create that schedule. Make it easier for your little one to know that there is a difference. This is important because it will help you with later stages.
Make sure you change your baby into some daytime clothes in the morning and have PJs for the night time. It will likely be a baby sleepsuit for the first few months, but just make a habit of getting changed the first thing, even if theres no other need to change the clothing.

Things To Try In Babys Sleep Environment
- Get quiet for 15 minutes prior to nap or bed. If there are big siblings, remove baby to somewhere quieter. Good routines that help baby wind down wind-down routines make a big difference in getting baby to settle. This is particularly important if baby has loud siblings who create a stimulating home environment.
- Get a wedge. If baby has gas, hiccups, or reflux get a wedge to put under the crib mattress so the baby can sleep on an incline. If you think your baby has reflux, there are certain measures you can take thatll help increase babys comfort which in turn will help him sleep.
- Make sure baby isnt too hot. If the baby is too hot hell wake up. You can shed a layer, get a summer swaddle, or even a legless swaddle for summertime. Otherwise, adjust the air temperature, put on a fan, and make sure baby isnt too hot. If baby has a sweat sheen on his face, cool him down.
How Can You Help Your Baby Fall Asleep
Not all babies know how to put themselves to sleep. When it is time for bed, many parents want to rock or breastfeed a baby to sleep. Establishing a routine at bedtime is a good idea. However, be sure that the baby does not fall asleep while eating or in your arms. This may become a pattern and the baby may begin to expect to be in your arms in order to fall asleep. When the baby briefly awakens during a sleep cycle, he or she may not be able to go back to sleep on his or her own.
Most experts recommend allowing a baby to become sleepy in your arms, then placing him or her in the bed while still awake. This way the baby learns how to go to sleep on his own. Playing soft music while your baby is getting sleepy is also a good way to help establish a bedtime routine.

Putting It All Together
Your newborn baby cycles through his two sleep stages for 16 to 20 hours per day in small chunks. Those chunks arent consecutive or nearly as long as adults need to feel rejuvenated and rested. So, parents need to find ways to get more sleep to avoid sleep deprivation.
Using sleep aids, like swaddling and white noise, can help to lengthen the time between wake ups. Every minute counts! Start creating a sleeping routine to help your babys brain learn to signal its bedtime and start winding down.
In the weeks following your babys birth, make sure you take it easy and avoid too many visitors. Spend as much time as possible resting and napping, when possible. Head to bed earlier and take advantage of every second possible to maximize your sleeping time.

Coping With Disturbed Nights
Newborn babies invariably wake up repeatedly in the night for the first few months, and disturbed nights can be very hard to cope with.
If you have a partner, ask them to help. If you’re formula feeding, encourage your partner to share the feeds. If you’re breastfeeding, ask your partner to take over the early morning changing and dressing so you can go back to sleep.
Once you’re into a good breastfeeding routine, your partner could occasionally give a bottle of expressed breast milk during the night. If you’re on your own, you could ask a friend or relative to stay for a few days so you can get some sleep.
How To Get Your Baby To Sleep Tip : Get Strategic About Diaper Changes
Did you know that many babies aren’t bothered by sleeping with a wet diaper? Now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be changing it throughout the night , but it does mean you might be changing it more than you need to.
We keep mentioning the importance of keeping baby calm and activity low during nighttime. Diaper changes can be pretty active and can really wake your baby up. Start changing your baby’s diaper before you feed them, that way they can calm back down and hopefully fall asleep either while your feeding them, or shortly after.
If you have to change their diaper after being fed, don’t turn on the lights, avoid talking to them excitedly and making eye contact. Try to master the diaper change with just the light from a night light so you’re not giving your baby any signals that it’s time to wake up.

If we had a genies lamp, better sleep for everyone in the family would definitely be at the top of our wish list.
But until that magical day arrives, we did the next best thing. We spoke to a real-life newborn sleep whisperer Ingrid Prueher, a pediatric sleep consultant, lactation counselor and founder of BabySleepWhisperer.com. Shes a former Wall Street analyst who became a sleep aficionado after the birth of her second son. He kept waking up every few hours at night, so Prueher used her love of data and research to get him in a good bedtime routine. Now shes on a mission to help families around the country get in tip-top sleep shape too.
Prueher uses a five-layer cake approach. That means laying a solid sleep foundation and then applying a training method, aka the icing. With a little groundwork, good sleep can become a reality.
My youngest client has been a day old and my oldest client has been 71 years old, Prueher says. Its never too late to get healthy sleep habits in your life and make sleep a priority.

In their first three months of life, you want to help them transition from the womb into our world. After that point, if your child has never slept well, start with some basics, Prueher says. Treat it like youre back to newborn days where you stayed home and focused on all of these things.

How To Get Your Newborn To Sleep
Sometimes it’s hard to fall asleep in strange places especially when home was a warm, dark and very cozy spot inside Mommy’s belly. When it comes to adjusting to life on the outside, your infant might appreciate sleep-enhancers that remind him of home. Try any or all of these baby sleep strategies to make sending baby off to dreamland a little bit easier.
1. Follow safe sleep guidelines. How your baby lies down and gets to sleep is a matter of safety, not just comfort. Put your newborn flat on his back in his crib, bassinet or playard without any loose bedding, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or crib bumpers. Experts also recommend room-sharing until baby is at least 6 months old. These safe sleep practices prevent overheating and suffocation, and reduce the risk of SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
2. Try putting him to bed drowsy but awake. Your baby isnt born knowing how to soothe himself to sleep, and if you let him fall asleep in your arms, youre doing his important work for him. A better idea is to rock, sway or pat him gently on the back until hes just nodding off, then put him down when he’s drowsy but still awake so he can learn to fall asleep on his own. Another idea: Try your hand at massaging your baby before he drifts off. Studies suggest that babies who are massaged before bed may produce more of the sleep-enhancing hormone melatonin. And its a nice way for you to bond with your little night owl.
What Are The Sleep Patterns Of A Newborn
The average newborn sleeps much of the day and night, waking only for feedings every few hours. It is often hard for new parents to know how long and how often a newborn should sleep. Unfortunately, there is no set schedule at first and many newborns have their days and nights confused?they think they are supposed to be awake at night and sleep during the day.
Generally, newborns sleep about 8 to 9 hours in the daytime and about 8 hours at night. Most babies do not begin sleeping through the night without waking until at least 3 months of age, or until they weigh 12 to 13 pounds. However, this varies considerably and some babies do not sleep through the night until closer to 1 year. Newborns and young infants have a small stomach and must wake every few hours to eat. In most cases, your baby will awaken and be ready to eat about every 3 hours. How often your baby will eat depends on what he or she is being fed and his or her age. Make sure you talk with your doctor to determine if it is necessary to wake a baby for feedings.
Watch for changes in your baby’s sleep pattern. If your baby has been sleeping consistently, and suddenly is waking, there may be a problem such as an ear infection. Some sleep disturbances are simply due to changes in development or because of overstimulation.
Never put a baby to bed with a bottle propped for feeding. This is a dangerous practice that can lead to ear infections and choking.

Stick To An Early Bedtime
When considering how to put a baby to sleep, timing is just as important as a routine. “At around 8 weeks, babies have a rise in melatonin, a drowsy-making hormone the body releases when it’s time for sleep, which means they’re ready for an early bedtime consistent with the sun setting,” says Turgeon. “If you keep them up late instead, they become overstimulated and harder to put down.” Melatonin levels rise somewhere around sundown, but given that sundown can be anytime from 4:30 in winter to 8:30 in summer, stick to the clock and put your baby down around 6:30 or 7 p.m. for the most success. If the sun is still up, close the shades.
“A good sign of drowsiness is when the baby becomes calmthey’re less active, have a bored look, or just stare off,” says Turgeon. Don’t mistake this behavior as happiness for being awake. Seize the moment and start your bedtime routine. “The baby’s internal clock is telling them when to be awake and when to be asleep, and you want to reinforce that,” she notes.
