How To Prepare Formula For Newborn

Keep Prepared Bottles Of Formula Refrigerated Until Ready To Use

How to Prepare Powdered Infant Formula

If you’re traveling away from home, store previously prepared bottles in an insulated container or a tightly sealed plastic bag with a small ice pack or a dozen ice cubes. The formula will stay fresh as long as most of the ice is frozen. Don’t use pre-mixed formula that’s no longer cold to the touch it’ll have to be tossed.

My Last Tip Is To Use A Good Quality Blender

With my first son, I used two different cheap blenders and they did not mix the ingredients well at all.

Using these blenders, I ran into several problems.

  • The oil was not mixed into the formula and it rose to the top creating a small layer of oil at the top of the jar. When this happens the formula is not mixed properly and each bottle has disproportionate amounts of oil.
  • One of the blenders developed cracks in it over time because it wasnt made to hold lukewarm/hot ingredients.
  • Neither of the cheap blenders had a good enough seal to hold the formula inside. If they were more than half full, they ended up spewing the formula all over the place as it was blended.
  • With all the problems I ran into the first time around, I knew I needed a good blender when my second son was born.

Theyre more expensive but well worth the money!

Ive had my Vitamix for over four years now. It still looks and operates as if it were brand new. The warranty on it is 7 years, so if something were to happen, or it quit working, I can replace it with a new one.

I chose a more compact model so that itd fit underneath my low hanging cupboards.

    Check The Expiration Date

Before you start to prepare any baby formula, be sure to check the expiration or “use by” date on the container. If it’s past that date, you shouldn’t use it since you can’t be sure of its quality.

If parents send you out shopping while you’re babysitting and you need to buy baby formula for them, be sure that it’s not about to expire in a few days or weeks.

Also, watch out for containers that look dented, damaged, or partially opened where the contents could have been exposed to air.

    Starter Or First Formula

There is a variety of starter formulas based on cows milk protein . Formula based on soy or goat’s milk is also available. These formulas are suitable for babies from birth to 12 months.

    Read the label carefully because:

    • formulas developed for toddlers as well as pregnant women can look very similar, so check the label carefully to ensure your baby gets a formula that is safe and appropriate for their age.
    • the label may list a number of additions such as LCPUFAs , probiotics or prebiotics. These ingredients are added because they are found naturally in breastmilk.

    Feeding Formula To Baby

Here is a guide to feeding your baby formula:

    • You do not need to warm formula before feeding. You can feed your baby cool or room-temperature formula.
    • If your baby prefers warm formula, warm it slowly by placing it in hot water. Do not boil the water and do not use a microwave. Always test the temperature on yourself before feeding your baby.
    • Hold your child close to you and make eye contact while feeding. Hold the bottle so the nipple and the neck of the bottle are always filled with formula. This will help prevent your child from swallowing air.
    • Throw away leftover formula within 1 hour after a feeding. Do not keep it and use again.

    Raw Milk Baby Formula

    Makes 36 ounces.

Our milk-based formula takes account of the fact that human milk is richer in whey, lactose, vitamin C, niacin, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to cows milk but leaner in casein . The addition of gelatin to cows milk formula will make it more digestible for the infant. Use only truly expeller-expressed oils in the formula recipes, otherwise they may lack vitamin E.

The ideal milk for baby, if he cannot be breastfed, is clean, whole raw milk from old-fashioned cows, certified free of disease, that feed on green pasture. For sources of good quality milk, see www.realmilk.com or contact a local chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation.

If the only choice available to you is commercial milk, choose whole milk, preferably organic and unhomogenized, and culture it with a piima or kefir culture to restore enzymes (available from G.E.M. Cultures 253-588-2922.

How to Properly Prepare Formula in 2020

As long as your child is healthy, you dont need to boil the water, states Adler. But if it gives you peace of mind, go ahead. Just make sure the water cools completely before mixing it with formula so as not to burn or scald the caregiver or the baby. Boiling hot water also can break down some of the nutrients in formula.

    Measure Out The Formula

If the family prefers a ready-to-use formula, then you wont need any additional steps. This type of formula comes in a pre-mixed liquid form already measured out in a bottle, so it’s easy to use without any further preparation. Don’t add water or any other liquid to a ready-to-use formula.

If you’re using a powdered or liquid concentrate formula, then you’ll need to measure it out. Again, follow the manufacturers instructions to determine how much formula should be prepared for a single feeding. Generally, there will be different amounts to mix depending on the child’s age.

For the powdered type of formula, measure out the amount you need based on the package using a measuring cup. Normally, a special scoop will come with the container, and it will tell you the number of scoops you need to use and how much water to add.

For a concentrated liquid formula, you’ll want to shake it thoroughly before mixing it with water.

Once you’ve mixed the liquid or powdered formula with water in the bottle, attach the nipple and cap, and then shake the bottle well to ensure everything is fully mixed.

Note that powdered formula is not sterile, so take care when feeding it to infants with immune problems or who are premature, unless you’re specifically directed to by the parents. Sterile liquid infant formula may be recommended for these babies.

Can I Store Formula Leftovers In The Fridge

Toss leftover formula. Once youve started feeding your baby from the bottle, the formula is good for just one hour. Thats because the babys mouth introduces bacteria to the nipple.

Its like how you wouldnt want to take a sip of milk, let it sit out a couple of hours and then drink it again or put it in the fridge for later. The risk of spoilage is too high, explains Adler.

    Types Of Baby Formula Milk

Before we get to the preparation part, let us cover the formula types in brief. Baby formula is available in two broad types liquid and powdered form. Liquid itself is available as ready-to-feed as well as liquid concentrates. Liquid formula is usually recommended for premature babies who are highly susceptible to infection, and hence liquid formula minimises human contact due to lack of any preparation intervention. Powdered formula is also highly effective if prepared the right way.

    Reducing The Risk Of Infection

How to Prepare Infant Formula and Feed Your Baby

Even when tins and packets of powdered infant formula are sealed, they can sometimes contain bacteria.

Bacteria multiply very fast at room temperature. Even when a feed is kept in a fridge, bacteria can still survive and multiply, although more slowly.

To reduce the risk of infection, it’s best to make up feeds 1 at a time, as your baby needs them.

Use freshly boiled drinking water from the tap to make up a feed. Do not use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled before.

Leave the water to cool in the kettle for no more than 30 minutes. Then it will stay at a temperature of at least 70C. Water at this temperature will kill any harmful bacteria.

Remember to let the feed cool before you give it to your baby. Or you can hold the bottle under cold water from the tap.

    Formula Usage And Storage Guidelines

There are a few basic rules you need to follow for safe use and storage when it comes to infant formula.

  • Store infant formula containers in a cool and dry area indoors. After the can is opened, the formula should be used within a month.
  • After the powdered infant formula has been prepared, it should be used within 2 hours. Once feeding begins, youll want your baby to drink it within the hour.
  • If your baby doesnt drink the entire bottle of formula within that hour, it needs to be thrown out because of the potential for bacteria growth.
  • Even if you cant completely clean your babys bottle right away, youll at least want to rinse it out with hot water until you can.
  • Variation: Goat Milk Formula

Although goat milk is rich in fat, it must be used with caution in infant feeding as it lacks folate and is low in vitamin B12, both of which are essential to the growth and development of the infant. Inclusion of nutritional yeast to provide folate is essential. To compensate for low levels of vitamin B12, if preparing the Milk-Based Formula with goats milk, add 2 teaspoons organic raw chicken liver, frozen for 14 days, finely grated to the batch of formula. Be sure to begin egg-yolk feeding at four months.
