When theyre tired, your baby might:

Set-in-stone one month old sleep schedules can set you up to fail because they assume you can control or predict how long your little one naps for, and that is almost impossible to do in this newborn stage. Naps can vary in length day to day. In addition, what do you do if your little one doesnât nap as long as the schedule says, or naps more? Do you keep them up until the next nap time even though they are tired?

I teach my clients a âflexible scheduleâ or a âdaily flow.â This helps you gather some predictability to your day as you can project ahead to what your baby will need in a few hours. The idea is that every time your baby wakes up, you are projecting out to when the next nap should fall. Every time your baby eats during the day you are projecting out to the next 3 hours to when the next feed needs to be.

Wake Windows For A 12

Wake windows are the amount of time your baby can stay awake during the day before she needs a nap. At twelve weeks old, that length of awake time should start to stretch out more. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 14-17 hours of sleep per day for babies 0-3 months old, but that number drops to 12-15 hours around twelve weeks. That means your babys wake window will gradually start to increase to a couple of hours between naps.

Coping With Disturbed Nights

Newborn babies invariably wake up repeatedly in the night for the first few months, and disturbed nights can be very hard to cope with.

If you have a partner, ask them to help. If you’re formula feeding, encourage your partner to share the feeds. If you’re breastfeeding, ask your partner to take over the early morning changing and dressing so you can go back to sleep.

Once you’re into a good breastfeeding routine, your partner could occasionally give a bottle of expressed breast milk during the night. If you’re on your own, you could ask a friend or relative to stay for a few days so you can get some sleep.

When the baby wakes up change the diaper and re-swaddle to prepare him for sleep immediately following a night feeding. If you change the diaper after the night feeding, the baby may become too awake, making it more challenging for him to fall asleep.

Now, Ive also heard from parents of very young newborn babies sharing that the baby poops right after a night feeding. This is very common during the early newborn phase when babies are still working out the flow of their digestive tracts.

If your baby is consistently stooling after a night feeding, then certainly, just wait to change the diaper until after the feed. Once your babys gut matures and he or she stops stooling immediately after a night feed, you can go back to changing the diaper before the feed.

The biggest sleep tip for babies at six months old? Introducing solid foods may just help your little one sleep better.

Mitchell points out that a big growth spurt often occurs around this time, which could lead to sleep disruptions if their nutritional needs are not being met. Solids during the day can help bridge that gap as your baby grows and she also adds that a temporary nighttime wake-up call for a feeding is normal too.

This is the age that I recommend gradually starting to introduce solids, and you may notice that your baby is hungrier than usual in this stage, which can be due to a growth spurt that often occurs around this time, she explains. If you have already dropped the night feed, but you notice your child is suddenly waking up and needing a feed, know that its OK to bring it back temporarily.

Around 3 Months: What To Expect From Baby Sleep

Babies keep developing night and day sleep patterns.

Their sleep cycles consist of:

  • light sleep, when baby wakes easily
  • deep sleep, when baby is sound asleep and very still
  • dream sleep, when baby is dreaming.

Sleep cycles also get longer, which might mean less waking and resettling during sleep. At this age, some babies might regularly be having longer sleeps at night for example, 4-5 hours.

Most babies still sleep for 14-17 hours in every 24 hours.

While one night feeding is still considered normal at this point, we usually recommend an attempt to night wean around 9 months. This will help you determine whether your baby still needs one feeding at night , or if your baby is waking more out of habit, and less out of a real need to eat.
