How To Keep Babies Awake Long Enough To Feed:

How do you get your baby on a sleep schedule?
  • Rub their feet and hands
  • Wipe their forehead, neck, and face with a wet wipe
  • Strip baby down to their diaper and un-swaddle or wrap them so they are not too warm and snug
  • Burp thoroughly when you change nursing sides, or halfway through with the bottle
  • Before a feeding, put your newborn on the ground for a little tummy time while you prepare to feed them, theyll kick around and wake themselves up a bit

When you begin nursing, encourage your baby to take a full feed. This will vary depending on the baby, but it will not be 5 minutes, then falling asleep.

If your baby falls asleep after only a few minutes, gently rouse them and encourage them to continue feeding.

If you can get your baby to take full feeds for the first week theyll naturally rest well, both day and night.

I know it can be super hard for you to get through this , but you will get through it. Youll likely do some contact napping during this period as well, which is precious and sweet in this early phase.

Theres a tendency to just let baby feed for a few minutes here and there and sleep here and there. This feels natural, but if you are a first time mom particularly its very hard to begin to understand babys cues.

Why?

Because baby seems to be fussing a lot and then falling asleep a lot and you dont know when theyre tired or when theyre hungry. THIS IS WHY routines are so beneficial to baby and mom.

Newborn Sleep Feeds And Play: Letting Your Baby Lead The Routine

With newborn sleeping and feeding, the key is being flexible and following your babys lead. Your babys cues and body language will help you understand whether your baby wants to sleep, feed or interact with you. Its OK to go with whatever feels right at the time.

Its also OK to try to do things in a similar order if that feels right for you and your baby. For example, you could trya simple routine of feed, play, sleep. Heres what this might look like:

  • Offer your baby a feed when they wake up.
  • Change your babys nappy.
  • Talk, play, cuddle and interact with your baby.
  • Put your baby back down for sleep.
  • If you try this kind of routine, its still important to watch your babys cues and respond.

    For example, your baby might show tired signs soon after a feed. This means that its time for your baby to sleep, even if you and baby havent had much time to play.

    Or your baby might show signs of being hungry after a play. In this situation, just give your baby another feed before settling baby for sleep. Your baby will sleep better with a full tummy.

    Or your baby might have an extra-long sleep every now and then. Thats OK too. Unless your doctor or child and family health nurse has told you otherwise, theres no need to wake your baby for feeds.

    And at night, the best option might be settling your baby straight back to sleep after feeds, rather than trying to play.

    Baby Sleep Schedule: 2 To 4 Months

    By the time your babyreaches 4 months old, they will have finally sorted out their days and nights, making napping and night sleeps a bit easier. The womb-like trifecta of white noise, gentle rocking, and swaddling are still importantbut one of these sleep-savers may need to stop soon. Once your baby shows signs of rolling, its no longer safe to swaddle them . And be warned about the possible 3-month sleep regression! It can suddenly appear, with your baby starting to wake up like a newbornevery few hoursand wanting to play or cuddlebut refusing to sleep alone.

    Total Sleep for 2- to 4-Month-Olds: Babies this age are still sleeping a ton, usually around 13 to14 hours of ZZZs a day.

    Wake Time for 2- to 4-Month-Olds: Your little one will most likely wake up little earlier now. Most babies this age start their day around 6am.

    Napping for 2- to 4-Month-Olds: When babies first emerge from newbornhood , they settle into two to three daily naps, totaling four to eight hours of sleep.

    Bedtime for 2- to 4-Month-Olds: Lights out shifts a bit earlier, with most babies going down around 9pm.

    Nighttime Sleep for 2- to 4-Month-Olds: Babies are able to sleep a little longer now, but they still wake for a feeding or two. Longest unbroken sleep can range from around five hours to up to eight hours.

    How To Make Newborn Sleep Schedule Healthy Sleeping

    Already exhausted with your newborn sleep schedule? Putting a baby to sleep is quite a task. Parents whose babies do not follow a sleep pattern are most likely to be sleep-deprived and exhausted. Hence, making a proper sleep schedule is really necessary for both the parent and the baby.

    Newborns until 6 weeks of life usually sleep 16-18 hours of the day waking every 2 hours for a feed. By the age of 3 months, they start sleeping for a longer time during the night, approximately for 5 hours, with 3 to 4 naps in between. Then, up till 6 months of time, the naps reduce to 2 to 3 throughout the day and possibly 8 to 10 hours of sleep at the night. By the time your baby reaches her first birthday, she should ideally sleep 10 to 12 hours at night with two hourly naps during the daytime.

    However, not all babies follow this sleep pattern. This is not uncommon for a child to develop a proper sleep schedule even after completing one year of life. Parents of these children have a hard time making them sleep throughout the night. Eventually, the child gets fussier and throws extra tantrums, making the parent exhausted.

    Dont Wake Your Baby To Feed After 2 Months

    If your baby is gaining weight properly, you donât have to wake them at night for feedings. Your baby needs to find them own sleep schedule. Once they are eating more in the daytime, they donât need to wake and eat at night.

    Here are some instances where you should wake your baby:

    • They are sleeping more in the day than the night and missing their daytime feeds.
    • Donât let them go more than 4 hours without eating during the day. You may need to wake the baby up to feed at night, but it is probably better to try to change your babyâs daytime habits rather than continuing to wake them every 4 hours at night.

    Your babyâs pediatrician will give you advice for your baby. For premature or special-needs babies, you may need to adjust feedings.

    What’s The Best Sleep Schedule For A 4

    Some babies start to settle into a more predictable schedule this month, but keep in mind that the 4-month sleep regression can cause poor sleep for a period of time. Naps can last between 30 minutes and two hours, and it’s also common for babies to start transitioning from four to three naps.

    Depending on how many naps your 4-month-old is taking, a typical day may look something like this:

    Sleep From The 4th To 6th Month Of Life

    The 4 to 6 month period is a time of transition. Some babies may need fewer naps, others may struggle to get to sleep for naps at all, and most will experience sleep regression. Sleep regression may sound like a scary term, but spoiler alert its a sign that your baby is developing normally!

    Sleep regression happens at about the 4-month mark when babies experience a regression in their sleep patterns. This means that they start to sleep like a newborn again so shorter naps, frequent wakings, irritability and fussiness, and needing to be put to sleep the same way every time are the obstacles you can expect to encounter.

    This is the result of developmental changes to their sleep. Babies immediately enter REM sleep for their first three months of life, this all changes at four months old. At four months they enter non-REM , the deepest part of their sleep occurs at the beginning stages of sleep. Then, babies go back and forth between lighter and deeper sleep in the middle of the night.

    During this window in the middle of their sleep, babies are prone to increased waking and will cry out to be soothed back asleep. The 4-month regression can be very hard on parents who desperately want their baby to sleep. Thankfully this phase doesn’t last forever. On average, this period lasts between 4 to 6 weeks and you can help make this more a peaceful time for everyone involved by sticking to a calming bedtime routine.

    Help Yourself Feel Like Yourself

    When you have a newborn at home and havent gotten a decent nights sleep in what feels like forever, you might find yourself dreaming about getting your baby on a sleep schedule.     Keep Your Expectations In Check

    For many reasons, newborns are not biologically capable of having a schedule in the traditional sense of the word. While many resources online encourage the scheduling of newborns, it is generally unwise to try to mandate or even expect a super predictable pattern in newborn sleep. Newborns do not have regular outputs of the hormone that regulates their sleep patterns.     If you are formula feeding that your baby is adapting well to the formula.

    For both scenarios you want your baby to be back up to birth weight and maintaining a weight curve. If thatâs not happening for you, donât worry about sleep now and focus your energies on that.

    Sleep In The 1st Month Of Life

    Parents know just how unpredictable newborn sleep patterns can be. Undoubtedly, these first months can be the hardest for parents who have the challenging task of repeatedly waking up to tend to their little ones.

    Without established sleep-wake rhythms, newborn babies need regular daytime naps in addition to nighttime sleep.     Whats Not Important About This Schedule

    • The times listed – your baby may wake up at 7 am for the day and change the times of naps – itâs the time intervals between feeds and sleeps that is important
    • The exact nap lengths. Newborn nap lengths may vary day to day. Maybe she only takes a 45 minute nap at the beginning of the day and wakes happy and content. Thatâs okay, start your 1 hour awake time from that time.
