Safety-wise, theres nothing that you should be worried about. The most important thing that you have to consider if you want to enable your newborn to start sleeping on their own is how comfortable they and you are. It can be emotional for both of you when you choose to stop co-sleeping, so if you have decided that this is best for your family, dont be afraid to start slow.

If you are sharing a bed, move babys crib into your room by your bed and lay them in there. Once he or she gets used to that sleeping environment, you can slowly introduce them to the new world, which would be a separate bedroom, when you are ready.

Baby monitors can help you rest a bit easier once you make the move. You will be able to check on them and be aware of whats going on whenever youd like.

Your Baby’s Sleep Environment

Some things you can do to create a good sleep environment for your baby include:

  • reducing stimulation around your baby for example, sit in a quiet room with dim lighting.
  • swaddling or wrapping your baby .
  • giving your baby a bath at night.
  • giving your baby a gentle massage.
  • creating a pre-sleeping routine, like singing lullabies.

What Is A Newborns Sleep Cycle Like

Most newborns will sleep in a cycle of about 2-3 hours, and then wake up for 1-2 hours to feed, or be soothed back to sleep. This can go on for 4-5 months!

Newborns typically spend 50% of their time sleeping this increases to 80% by 3 months and 90% by 6 months. Most babies will grow out of periodic arousals from sleep around 3-6 months.

The last third of the night is usually when they get their longest stretches of restorative rest . Thats why its recommended that you dont wake them up in the last third of their sleep cycle.

How Much Crying Is Normal For Newborn Babies

In the early days, many parents may actually find that they have a dream baby on their hands. The baby hardly cries, but thats usually only because a newborn sleeps a lot, not because they think crying is a waste of time.

While all babies are different, all babies will inevitably wake up, find their lungs and cry. Whether this happens in the first few days or first few weeks will of course depend on your baby. A babys cry usually peaks at around 6 to 8 weeks of age and can be more noticeable in the late afternoon or evening. This will usually taper off by the time theyre about six months old.

The 2nd S: Side Or Stomach Position

Make It Feel Like Mommy

Sleeping, like eating, is not a state you can force a baby into. The best you can do is to create a secure environment that allows sleep to overtake your baby. A realistic long- term goal is to help your baby develop a healthy attitude about sleep. Baby should feel that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a secure state to remain in. Many sleep problems in older children and adults stem from children growing up with an unhealthy attitude about sleep. Teach your baby a restful attitude about sleep when they are young. By doing this, both you and your children will sleep better when they are older.

Where Should My Baby Sleep

For the first 6 months your baby should be in the same room as you when they’re asleep, both day and night. This can reduce the risk of SIDS .

Particularly in the early weeks, you may find your baby only falls asleep in your or your partner’s arms, or when you’re standing by the cot.

You can start getting your baby used to going to sleep without you comforting them by putting them down before they fall asleep or when they’ve just finished a feed. It may be easier to do this once your baby starts to stay alert more frequently or for longer.

Let Your Baby Work It Out

If you immediately rush in to help your munchkin fall back to sleep at the first noise you hear, you could be creating a cycle that will be hard to break. “As long as you know that they can’t be hungry, you can pause before rushing in,” says Turgeon, who recommends starting a “soothing ladder” from as early as day one. When you hear your baby fuss, pause for a minute and see if they can work it out themselves. “If they can’t, go in and do the least intrusive thingpat or shush but don’t pick them up,” says Turgeon. If that doesn’t work, you gradually climb the soothing ladder until you get them back to sleep.

“The point of the soothing ladder isn’t to make a baby learn to self-soothe overnight, but to give them enough space to allow their self-soothing skills to unfold naturally, over time,” says Turgeon. Plus, it may help you avoid a more traumatic cry-it-out situation down the road.

Sleep Problems After Illness

A sore or scratchy throat, congestion and fever can all make it harder for babies to snooze soundly.

Of course, you want to do what you can to soothe your sweetie and help her get the rest she needs, whether that means popping in for a dose of fever-reducing meds if your pediatrician says its okay or a quick nursing session, or holding her upright while she sleeps to ease her congestion.

But sometimes, especially if wake-ups happen for several nights in a row, its possible for a baby to get used to the midnight visits, snuggles and even feedings. And that could potentially lead to sleep issues even after shes feeling better.

What it looks like: Your babys normally good sleep habits got disrupted when she was sick, but now that shes healthy again, shes still waking up crying for you during the night.

How to solve it: Once your baby is back to her healthy, bubbly self during the day, its time to get back to the usual sleep habits at night. It might take her a few nights to get reacquainted with the normal routine, so hold steady. The more consistent you are, the sooner shell get the message nighttime is for sleep, not hanging out together.

Extinction Or Cry It Out

The idea behind extinction is that you want to extinguish the behaviour by not responding to it. As with the check-and-console method, go through your bedtime routine, put them in their crib awake, say good night and walk out. This is certainly the most controversial sleep-training method, and even experts disagree on what you should do nextit all depends on what stage your baby is at developmentally, as well as what works for the parents.

McGinn, for example, suggests leaving your baby until the morning, unless youve predetermined that they still need a feed in the night. That first night can be rough, says McGinn. They could be up every hour crying.

Mitelman, on the other hand, recommends that parents wait for at least one or two wake-ups before going back into the room. Then, if the baby wakes up after midnight, she believes its OK to go back in, comfort your baby for a few minutes and then leave again. She also supports scheduling in regular night-time feeds if your baby still needs them.

Consider Their Developmental Stages

So, dont get frustrated if they seem to take a step back from time to time and start to wake more during the night. Chances are your baby has wind and needs to be burped. This can happen at bedtime and during the night, when your baby hasn’t had her normal awake time and been upright long enough for any wind to come up.

Keep her swaddled, pick and burp over your shoulder. Then put her back into bed and pat or sssh to help her get back to sleep if needed.

After her next bedtime or night-time feed, try to ensure you get all possible burps up, even if you sit for a few extra minutes with her upright to allow wind to come up more easily.

Coping With An Unsettled Baby

Coping with an unsettled baby can be highly demanding and stressful for any parent.
