Steel yourself: Day three involves putting your child down in their crib while they’re still awake. “It’s the single most important thing you can do,” says Dr. Schaefer. “If they fall asleep at your breast during their bedtime feeding, for example, arouse them enough that their eyes are open when you place them in the crib.” Of course, a littleor a lotof crying may ensue. When Is Your Baby Ready For Sleep Training

The best time to start sleep training your baby is when they drop their middle-of-the-night feedings or when theyre able to self-soothe, which is typically between four and six months. At this point, your baby has established somewhat of a routine sleep-wake cycle, but you may experience difficulty with sleep training if your baby still wakes up for feedings in the middle of the night. Talk with your childs pediatrician before sleep training your baby, especially if they were born premature or are slow to gain weight.

Carefully Choose When To Start


It may be tempting to sleep train your baby right out the gate for a deep desire to gain back those precious zzzs. Equally, it can be easy to fall into a bad habit of rocking your infant to relax every night until theyre three years old.

Suddenly, youre stuck training your kid to go to bed at an age when they can verbally say, No, thanks.

You can start teaching your kiddo when they become mobile, can roll over on their own, are no longer being swaddled, and can snooze for at least one four to six hour stretch of time, generally around five months of age.

Sleep Training And Night Feedings

Many people also often correlate sleep training to weaning a babys night feedings. This is not the case. Night feedings can typically begin to wean around 4 months old when your babys fat stores are well produced. This is when your baby has the ability to go longer stretches without feeding, rather than the every two to three-hour newborn feeding phase. Sleep training can start around this same time, but sleep training does not equal weaning of these night feeds.

For my daughter, we didnt get rid of her night feed until around 8 months old due to her weight gain issues related to her laryngomalacia. So in some cases, such as ours, night feedings may be needed for longer. This is often the case for premature babies or babies with medical conditions.

And then sometimes night feedings do drop while sleep training because your baby will now have the ability to get back to sleep on their own by self-soothing and wont need to eat to fall back asleep.

Put Baby To Sleep In Their Bed

Wherever you want baby to sleep at night time is where you should put them for naps as well. It may be tempting to hold and rock that baby for the next 2 hours but the sooner you can get them accustomed to sleeping in their own bed, the better .

Try to avoid letting baby nap in a car seat, bouncer or swing, as this can develop bad habits as they get older. Remaining consistent about where they sleep will help them get used to their bedroom and learn not to fear it.

Make sure that babys room is as comfortable as possible. Try using a warm or cool mist humidifier to make sure that their room is set up with the right conditions for them to sleep.

Why Bedtime Routines Are Critical To Sleep Training

When babies come into the world, their sleep rhythm is chaotic. Not only do their sleep cycles typically last just 45 minutes, with brief wakeful transitions, but they also do not know the difference between night and day. And this last point is the reason experts suggest developing a bedtime routine.

At first, the routine does not have to be elaborate. At the very least, a routine should include turning off screens, decreasing play activity, and dimming lights. This will help a child start to orient to the rhythms of their environment.

But parents can, and should, add more to a bedtime routine. Experts agree that the best bedtime routines present a child with a series of cues that its time to stop being active and start getting sleepy. These cues might include a warm bath, some dental hygiene, a story, and a song. With each activity, a child should begin to relax.

Some experts suggest parents go the extra mile to make the routine a ritual, by adding special moments of connection. These might include a unique phrase or prayer, a moment of mindfulness, or a low-key imaginative game. Adding these elements are particularly great for older children who will start their sleep time with a sense of peace and connection.

For the first few months of his life, Laura Welks baby, Greyson, was a dream sleeper. He had regular naps during the day, and all it took was a calming bottle in the evenings and he would be fast asleep. He would wake up only once a night for a feed, and that would last him until morning.

But when he was about three-and-a-half months old, the routine fell apart. I would feed him, but he wouldnt be asleep at the end of the feed, recalls Welk. I would rock him until he fell asleep and put him down, and then he would wake up 30 minutes later and I would do it all over again. Desperate for some rest, Welk brought Greyson into bed with her, but then she ended up just lying still, holding a pacifier in his mouth all night long. I didnt know anything about sleep, says Welk. I didnt know you couldnt just rock them to sleep and then put them down.

When Greyson was four months old, the first-time parents contacted a sleep consultant, who clued them into a few things that were getting in the way of Greyson sleeping well: All the rocking and pacifying were now ingrained in him as sleep associationsor crutches he needed to fall asleep and stay asleep.
