Wean The Baby Gradually

Weaning your baby off of breastfeeding fully to sleep wont happen overnight. Youll likely have to repeat the un-latch, soothe, re-latch, un-latch, soothe cycle over and over the first few nights or maybe even weeks. The suck-to-sleep association is one of the strongest to break, but the results will be well worth it!

Not only will this help her learn to self-soothe, but youll also be cutting down on nighttime wakings that arent related to hunger .

Why Do Babies Cry

All newborns cry and get fussy sometimes. It’s normal for a baby to cry for 23 hours a day for the first 6 weeks. During the first 3 months of life, they cry more than at any other time.

New parents often are low on sleep and getting used to life with their little one. They’ll quickly learn to find out if their crying baby:

  • has a wet or dirty diaper
  • is too hot or cold

Often, taking care of a baby’s needs is enough to soothe a baby. But sometimes, the crying goes on longer.

Is Your Baby Unresponsive Or Indifferent

4 ways to soothe a craying baby

Most babies use crying to communicate and they will continue to cry or show that they are upset until a parent or caregiver responds to their needs. Other babies, instead of crying, become upset and then tune out and fail to show any emotion. If you think about it, you probably know more than one adult who acts this way when faced with difficulty. An unresponsive baby might seem like an easy baby, because they may be quiet and agreeable. But a baby that doesnt respond to you, the environment, and sensory influences needs help. Call your pediatrician right away.

NEVER NEVER shake a baby

Shaken Baby Syndrome occurs when a baby is shaken. The blood vessels in a babys head cannot tolerate the impact of shaking and can break.

  • The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome estimates that there are about 1,300 reported cases each year in the U.S.
  • Shaking is the leading cause of child abuse deaths and can also result in brain damage, mental retardation, seizures, or blindness.
  • Shaking usually happens when parents or caregivers become frustrated or angry when they are not able to stop the baby from crying.
  • Shaken baby syndrome is 100% preventable.

The only way babies communicate till they learn to talk is by crying. Yes, babies can cry for as much as three to four hours a day. There are many reasons why babies cry. If you are a new parent it can get frustrating when you have a wailing baby and you dont know what the reason for their crying is. We understand that living with a baby who cries all the time is not easy so here are some tried and tested methods to soothe a crying baby that works like magic!

How Can You Soothe A Baby With Colic

Instantly Calm a Crying Baby (4 Little-Known Techniques That Work When Nothing Else Does)

As you get to know your baby, you learn to check for the obvious causes of distress when they cry. Are they hungry? Are they hot or cold? Does their diaper need changing? Are they over-stimulated? A baby with colic might be crying for one of those reasons. Or they may be crying for a reason you cant understand.

Once youve checked on their possible physical needs and sources of discomfort, its time to go into comforting mode, using whatever technique helps to calm your baby. Every baby is different, and what works for one may not work for another.

With that in mind, here are some ways to soothe a baby with colic:

  • Hold and cuddle your baby.
  • Walk with your baby.
  • Swaddle your baby in a soft blanket.
  • Sing and talk softly to your baby.
  • Sway back and forth while you hold your baby, or find other ways to gently rock her. Some babies are calmed by a swing.
  • Gently rub your babys back.
  • Change your babys position: Sit them up if they have been lying down, or hold them face-out if they have been facing your chest.
  • Hold your baby near low, rhythmic noises, like the sound of the washing machine or a recording of a heartbeat. The steady hum of a fan or a white noise machine can also be soothing.
  • Go for a ride in the car. The motion and noise of a car ride helps to calm some babies.
  • Give your baby a pacifier. Many babies are calmed by sucking, and a pacifier can satisfy this need between feedings.

What Sort Of Things Did The Researchers Discover

First, it was obvious that babies were very sensitive to their mothers movements. A babys heart rate would increase when just about any change occurred, such as a turn or tilt, or even the cessation of walking. And the most disruptive change? That moment when an infant was suddenly detached from the caregivers body.

In addition, it was clear as it had been in previous research that walking is a good way to soothe a baby. Rocking in the stroller was helpful as well. As the researchers note, their data suggest that the rhythmic motion of walking and rocking had robust calming effects on infants, even among infants who had been crying hard. By contrast, babies werent soothed when their mothers held them while remaining stationary .

As for soothing babies to sleep, we should remember that these sessions were deliberately scheduled for a time of day when the babies werent usually sleepy. So it isnt surprising if babies often remained awake.

Yet babies sometimes did fall asleep, and for one group in particular babies who had been crying walking seemed to have fairly powerful, sleep-inducing effects. In the 11 cases where a crying infant had been randomly assigned to experience a 5-minute walk, 5 babies were asleep by the end of the task, and two more babies who hadnt yet nodded off when their pacing mothers were told to switch to sitting down fell asleep within one minute of that transition.

What Is A Good Schedule For A 2 Month Old

While every babys sleep needs are slightly different, a typical 2-month-old sleeps a total of 14 to 17 hours a day, including four to six naps. Day-night confusion should be subsiding, and you may see baby settle into a rough pattern of 60 to 90 minutes of awake time followed by 30 minutes to two hours of napping.

Baby Wakes Up Screamingis It Normal

Babies can wake up during night around 3 to 4 times, depending on their age and feeding habits, but waking up while screaming is an issue parents should not take lightly. Nightmares or bad dreams are usually a sign of deep psychological problems that should be recognized and dealt with as soon as possible. According to a latest survey, 1% to 6% children may have night terrors and wake up screaming. Also, it has been mostly observed that boys are at higher risk of experiencing night terrors for unknown reasons. According to a survey, around 40% of children will experience one nightmare before they reach the age of 6 and if one family member has a positive history of night terrors, other family members are at significant risk of experiencing it as well.

Calm Down And Soothe Yourself First

How to Soothe a Crying Baby

The most important thing to do when your baby is crying is calm yourself first. Ask your partner or any family member or friend to stay around the baby or place the baby in the crib. Go to another room, relax, take a deep breath, and listen to some calming music. Once you are calm enough you can go back to the baby and hold the baby. Shutting yourself out from a wailing baby even for a few minutes will help you to handle your baby better.

Figure Out Why Your Newborn Is Crying

If a newborn is crying, it is always important to try to find the reason why, says , PhD, APN Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Nationwide Childrens Hospital.

  • They are hungry and need to be fed.
  • They need a diaper change.
  • They are tired and need sleep.
  • They are lonely and want to be held.
  • They have gas and burping may help.

Other reasons could be that they have acid reflux or food allergies or sensitivities. And as you get to know your baby better, youll start to notice that theyll have different cries for different needs. For example, when theyre hungry their cry might sound more low-pitched compared to if theyre tired.

Important:If you cannot find out the reason and it continues, they may need to be seen by a healthcare provider to make sure they are not ill or it is not anything serious, Tranter says.

Crying Can Be Frustrating

Caring for a baby is hard work and that little baby may cry more than you ever expected. You should always respond when your baby cries. But sometimes, no matter what you try, you might not be able to stop the crying. If youre feeling overwhelmed and your baby wont stop crying, remember:

  • All babies cry its how they communicate, and your baby may cry a lot.
  • Babies start to cry more frequently around 2 weeks of age.

  • Babies often cry more in the evenings.
  • Crying can last 30-40 minutes and even longer. Infants may spend up to 4-5 hours a day crying, even for healthy, normal babies.
  • Babies often cry intensely when they are not in pain, even though they may look like they are in pain.
  • Sometimes your baby may need to cry to relieve stress, and its okay to let him or her cry.
  • Crying may come and go, and you wont know why.
  • Crying may not stop for an extended period of time, no matter what you try.

Is Hunger Stopping You From Soothing Your Baby To Sleep

Sometimes babies are just hungry thats just a fact. Dont think they just wont notice if you miss a feed and send them to bed half full. Even if they do manage to nod off, theyre much more likely to wake up sooner when their tummies start rumbling.

Introducing a dream feed can help in this situation, as well as making sure you dont skip any meals and feed your baby well before its time to sleep .

What To Do If Youre Feeling Frustrated By Your Babys Crying

No one can take endless tears, especially if youre operating on too-little sleep due to middle-of-the-night feedings. Feeling frustrated by crying is normal, so ease the load by passing baby to your partner, mother, friend or sitter and then taking time for yourself.

And no matter how frustrated you are, never, ever shake your baby. Vigorous shaking, such as that done in frustration, can result in abusive head trauma , commonly known as shaken baby syndrome , even if it’s brief. Violent shaking in children of any age can cause severe brain damage or death, but infants and young toddlers are particularly susceptible.

If you ever sense that youre at a breaking point, put your baby in her crib and rest quietly in another room until you feel calm. Other strategies that may help, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics , include taking a breath and counting to 10, calling a friend for emotional support or listening to calming music.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and you think you need to talk with a professional about your feelings, call a crisis hotline, mental health organization or your healthcare provider right away.

Extinction Or Cry It Out

The idea behind extinction is that you want to extinguish the behaviour by not responding to it. As with the check-and-console method, go through your bedtime routine, put them in their crib awake, say good night and walk out. This is certainly the most controversial sleep-training method, and even experts disagree on what you should do nextit all depends on what stage your baby is at developmentally, as well as what works for the parents.

McGinn, for example, suggests leaving your baby until the morning, unless youve predetermined that they still need a feed in the night. That first night can be rough, says McGinn. They could be up every hour crying.

Mitelman, on the other hand, recommends that parents wait for at least one or two wake-ups before going back into the room. Then, if the baby wakes up after midnight, she believes its OK to go back in, comfort your baby for a few minutes and then leave again. She also supports scheduling in regular night-time feeds if your baby still needs them.

Know When Crying Is Normal And When It Isnt

Newborns will typically cry for as much as two to three hours of the day. According to Tranter, you can expect your babys crying to peak between their sixth and eighth week of life, and from there it should taper off.

Older babies may have different reasons for crying. For example, at around 6 months old, they could be experiencing teething or struggling to adapt to a change in routine.

As babies mature, they may start crying for developmental reasons such as stranger anxiety or frustration with not being able to communicate their needs, Tranter says.

Most babies will cry until they get their needs met. However, if their crying is accompanied by other symptoms, such as a fever, continued cold symptoms, bloody diarrhea, or vomiting, they need to be seen by a doctor for treatment.

Some babies cry a lot because they have colic, when a baby cries for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, and more than three weeks straight. If you think your baby has colic, the advice is the same as before â take them to a pediatrician for an examination.

Your stress and tiredness levels might mean partying isnt top of your to do list. But why not give it a go an impromptu dance around the living room, or another crazy move might be just the ticket to soothe those cries:

I dance with him! Or walk him around the flat and talk to him….nothing ground-breaking but they work!

Ive always found gently cuddling/rocking a baby while standing up to be pretty effective.

We got an exercise ball and bounce on it gently with him, which pretty much always works – my I call it The Neutraliser!
