You can keep baby squirrels in a box until seven weeks and then start to plan for a cage.
7 9 Weeks
They are usually half their full size, and they will have fluffy tails. You can place them in a cage with plenty of room where they can play.
8 Weeks
At eight weeks, they will look like miniature squirrels. They will be very active and can also shred fabrics.
9 12 Weeks
They are more muscular at this age and will soon reach full maturity. You can release squirrels to the wild at 12 weeks.

A baby squirrel with any of the following signs is injured or orphaned and needs medical attention:
- There are obvious wounds or blood on its body
- It has had contact with a cat even with no obvious injuries, this is a medical emergency for baby squirrels
- There are lots of bugs or insects crawling all over it
Keep the baby warm, dark, and quiet, dont give it any food or water, and contact a wildlife rehabilitator right away.

Making A Makeshift Nest
While youre waiting for the mother to retrieve her baby, you can assist the baby squirrel in keeping warm by making a temporary nest for it. Surround it with warmth by having bottles filled with warm water placed under old clothes, a blanket, or a towel.
Do not cover the baby, because it will make it hard for its mother to see it. Putting it in a box, even if its lid is open, will be equally obstructive.
When placing the baby in the nest, try to position it so that it is secure and comfortable. It is okay to hold them the mother is not going to be bothered by human smell on the baby.
However, the mother may shy away if the baby is chilled, and thus you should keep it warm. Once a squirrel who may likely be its mother comes to it but leaves again after a while, it is not necessarily a bad sign.
If it is its mother, leaving it may indicate that she has ascertained that she knows where her offspring is, confirmed that it is reasonably healthy, and maybe needs to create her new nest or look for more food.
Squirrels are diurnal, meaning they are active at daytime. And so, if you observed that the mother is not there by night time, it is safe to assume that the dark prevented her from coming back.
The mother would not want to leave her baby by itself, even if she has already made her new nest. She will return to it though, to check on it and even feed it at least.

As mentioned, feeding baby squirrels can be quite a challenge if you have no information about it in the first place. Here are some tips on how to properly care for a baby squirrel until it is strong and big enough to return back to the wild.
1. Keep the Squirrel Warm
The first thing you need to do after finding a baby squirrel is to keep the little squirrel warm. The warming process should be gradual, always paying attention to not over-warm the squirrel. 99 degrees Fahrenheit is a normal temperature for little squirrels.
You can just place the little squirrel in a box. Place a clean cloth in the box first. Also, cover your squirrel well. It is important to know that towels are a no-go for squirrels. You should never use a towel, as squirrels tend to get their toenails in the loops of the towel. A baby diaper or a baby receiving blanket is preferred.
You can also use a heating pad to warm up your little squirrel. You can put the heating pad under the box , wrapped twice with a towel. Once the baby squirrel is warm enough you can remove the heating pad.
2. Rehydrate Your Squirrel
If you dont have a Pedialyte, a homemade rehydration solution can do the work. Mix salt, regular table sugar, and warm water, and feed your baby squirrel after you have made sure that all the ingredients are mixed well. Store this rehydration solution in a refrigerator.
