How Often Should You Bathe Your Newborn
Until a baby starts getting down and dirty on the ground, a daily bath isn’t needed . Your baby only needs a bath two or three times a week and in fact too much bathing can dry out your infants delicate skin. Newborns should only have sponge baths until their umbilical cords dry up and fall off.
When youre ready to graduate from a sponge bath, move the fun to a baby bathtub and eventually the big tub when your baby can sit up on her own and outgrows the infant tub. There’s nothing cuter than seeing a baby splashing in the bath, soapy suds dotting those chubby folds and dimples but always keep safety in mind. Never leave your baby alone in the bath water even for a second.
What Happens If The Bath Water Is Too Hot For A Baby
If your baby is exposed to bathwater that is too hot for their skin, it can dry out their skin or they can become scalded. Depending on the temperature of the water, this scalding or burning can take only a few seconds.
Babies will be at an increased risk of scalding when they are placed in water that is too hot. Avoid this by taking the following steps:
- Do not add more hot water while the baby is already in the tub.
- If there are hot spots in the water, mix it around to distribute the warmth.
- Do not leave your child unattended, as he or she could potentially reach and turn on the faucet by themselves.
Watch out for signs that your babys bathwater is too hot. If your child is crying uncomfortably when you place him or her in the tub, check the water temperature to make sure everything is fine. Also, if the baby comes out of the tub and their skin is turning red, the water may have been too hot and you may need to visit a doctor for scalding and burns.
Tips For Safely Bathing Your Newborn
Besides keeping your baby happy and getting them clean, safety should be a top concern when it comes to bathing your baby. Unfortunately, drowning is something all parents of newborns need to be aware of.
As the AAP notes, ost child drownings inside the home occur in bathtubs, and more than half of bathtub deaths involve children under 1 year of age. These are sobering statistics, but they are not meant to scare you instead, they are reminders to take safety very seriously when it comes to bathing your baby.

Check The Water Temperature
Warmer water may feel more comfortable for your baby now that its colder outside, but make sure not to turn the hot water tap on too high. Hot water can be dangerous for your little one, so aim for warm water at a temperature of around 90° to 100° F. You can also use your elbow or wrist to check that the temperature feels just right. How To Measure The Baby Bath Temperature

Here are a few ways through which you can measure your babys bath temperature.
- Use a bath thermometer.
- Insert your elbow or wrist in the water for a few seconds to check if the water feels mildly warm.
- Use bath toys or floating thermometers that change color to indicate extremely hot water.
Avoid using the standard mercury-in-glass thermometer to check the water temperature, as the device is delicate to use and may offer only a limited range temperature reading. Besides, the digital thermometer may not be waterproof, so inserting it in a bathtub might ruin it.
Regardless of the method you employ to check the water temperature, always double-check the water by inserting your hand into it to ensure it is safe for your little one. Also, when bathing, if you feel that the water has become cold, pull out your baby immediately.

Bathing new babys too frequently can dry out their skin. Be sure to use a baby safe soap and cleansers that are delicate enough for their soft skin.
If you find they are still dirty between baths, from a messy dinner or play time, you can also give your little one a sponge bath between bath days to keep them healthy and clean.
When your little one is a little older you may want to develop a bath-book-bed routine as part of your wind down routine before bedtime.
How Does The Newborn Stay Warm
An understanding of the physiological thermoregulation capabilities of the newborn is imperative to administering a proper newborn bath, especially when determining an appropriate bath water temperature. The healthy newborn baby keeps itself warm through three mechanisms: alteration of body position, vasoconstriction, and non-shivering thermoneogenesis. When the newborn senses a drop in core temperature, it will flex the extremities and bring them closer to the trunk in order to conserve heat by reducing surface area. Vasoconstriction will occur in response to cold as the sympathetic nervous systems signals the peripheral vasculature to constrict, thus reducing blood flow to the skin and subsequent heat loss through conduction. The infants primary mechanism of preventing heat loss, however, is heat production by non-shivering thermoneogenesis. This mechanism consists of the hypothalamus detecting a drop in body temperature and signaling the metabolism of mitochondria-rich brown adipose tissue, which results in the release of heat. These mechanisms allow the healthy newborn baby to maintain a body temperature of 36.5 to 37.2 °C . =
Recommendation
