Symptoms Of Subtle Seizures

Baby with seizures

Subtle seizures are more common among full-term babies. Symptoms of subtle seizures include:

  • Random or roving eye movements, eyelid blinking or fluttering, eyes rolling up, eye opening, staring
  • Sucking, smacking, chewing and protruding tongue
  • Unusual bicycling or pedalling movements of the legs
  • Thrashing or struggling movements
  • Long pauses in breathing

What Does A Seizure Look Like

While many epileptic seizures involve shaking or twitching in a person who does not seem responsive, there are many different types of seizures. They all look different. The way a seizure appears depends on the areas and amount of the brain involved.

The most common types of seizures, and what they look like, include:

What Causes Seizures In Pre

Babies born prematurely are highly vulnerable to brain injury and susceptible to seizures in the first weeks of life.

The most common causes of seizures in pre-term babies are brain haemorrhages and infections, although the cause is not known for all babies. Babies with a low birth weight seem to be especially at risk of seizures.

What Are Infant Seizures? How Do I Know If My Baby Is Having One?

If youre the parent of a newborn, few things are more frightening than your child having a seizure. What caused it? Will it happen again? Did it cause any lasting harm to the baby? Are there underlying problems that led to the seizure?

True neonatal seizures are those that occur within 28 days of birth, but of course, any seizure in an infant or child is a matter worth checking out with a doctor. Some seizures may be difficult to detect in newborns, because they are brief and because newborns, of course, dont have control over their muscles as an adult or older child would. In fact, many of the signs of seizures are also movements that a typical newborn might make. A good rule of thumb is to not panic, but to speak with your pediatrician. If you are able, videotape the suspected seizure activity to show your doctor in case he or she isnt able to witness a suspected seizure.

Some indications of a seizure in a newborn or young infant include:

If you start to get a feeling that your babys movements are not normal, or someone else comments on it, dont ignore it. It is worth checking out with your babys doctor. If it turns out to be nothing, you will have peace of mind if what you are witnessing turns out to be seizure activity, your doctor can begin guiding you through the process of diagnosis and treatment.

What Possible Treatments Are There For Infant Seizures

According to Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing: Fifth Edition, patient care management for infant seizures involves the following, in sequential order :

  • Determining the cause of the seizures
  • Obtaining diagnostic studies as ordered
  • Providing pharmaceutical therapy

If the cause of seizures is HIE, cooling therapy is initiated.

The most common treatment for seizures is anti-seizure medications. These may also be referred to as antiepileptic drugs or AEDs. There are many types of AED that may be prescribed, depending on age, type of seizure, frequency of seizure, and other variables. Narrow spectrum AEDs are designed for specific types of seizures occurring in a certain part of the brain. Broad spectrum AEDs can prevent seizures that occur in multiple parts of the brain. Healthline provides more detailed information about AED types.

Some children with seizures may benefit from cannabidiol oil, which is derived from the cannabis plant, but does not have the psychogenic effects associated with strains used as a recreational drug. Many patients report fewer overall side effects from CBD than other seizure medications. To learn more about this treatment, click here.

In some cases, doctors may also recommend the ketogenic diet, which is high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrates. The ketogenic diet causes the childs body to produce ketones, which help to control seizures.

Etiology Of Neonatal Seizure Disorders

The abnormal central nervous system electrical discharge may be caused by a

  • Primary intracranial process

  • Systemic problem

Seizures resulting from an intracranial process usually cannot be differentiated from seizures resulting from a systemic problem by their clinical features .

Neonatal seizures may be familial some have genetic causes. Benign familial neonatal convulsions is a potassium channelopathy inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy is a rare disorder associated with a variety of mutations.

Whats The Difference Between Infantile Spasms And West Syndrome

West syndrome happens when your baby has a combination of symptoms, including:

  • Infantile spasms.
  • Abnormal brain wave patterns called hypsarrhythmia.
  • Developmental delays or developmental regression.

While babies whore affected by infantile spasms often have West syndrome, they can experience infantile spasms without having or later developing developmental delays.

Are Infant Seizures Caused By Medical Malpractice

HELP! I THINK MY BABY IS HAVING SEIZURES | Dr. Paul

Seizures in a baby are not always caused by medical malpractice. Seizures can be a sign or symptom of underlying medical issues that may have been entirely unpreventable. However, in many cases the brain injury that caused the seizure could have been prevented if the expected standard of care had been provided. In these circumstances, there may be grounds for a medical malpractice claim.

Can Epilepsy Lead To Brain Damage

Research into whether or not seizures can cause brain damage has shown mixed outcomes.

A 2018 study examined postsurgical brain tissue from people with recurrent seizures. The researchers found no brain damage markers in people with certain types of epilepsy.

However, several other studies have suggested that severe, long lasting seizures could lead to brain injury. For example, one 2013 study found that seizures could result in brain abnormalities, with status epilepticus causing irreversible brain lesions.

Other studies have looked at cognitive changes in children as they get older, either with or without epilepsy. Results that epilepsy is associated with worse cognitive outcomes.

However, it is unclear whether:

  • epilepsy causes the impairment
  • a similar structural change causes both epilepsy and the impairment
  • antiepileptic drugs have an effect

This is an area that needs further research.

How Are Infantile Spasms Diagnosed

Infantile spasms are diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist . Testing may include:

  • blood tests and urine tests
  • EEG to see brain waves/electrical activity in the brain. The hypsarrhythmia pattern often confirms the diagnosis, but not every child with infantile spasms will have this.
  • VEEG, or video electroencephalography

How Common Are Febrile Seizures

Children at highest risk for recurrence are those who have:

  • Young age. Children who have their first febrile seizure when they are younger than 18 months are at an increased risk of having another one.
  • Family history. Children whose family members had febrile seizures are more likely to have more than one seizure.
  • First sign of illness. Children who have febrile seizures before exhibiting other symptoms of an illness, are at greater risk of having multiple seizures.
  • Low temperature. Children are more likely to have another febrile seizure if the first one was accompanied by a relatively low temperature.

Our Areas Of Innovation For Seizures

Physicians and researchers at Boston Childrens Hospital are constantly looking for safer, more effective treatments to help children live seizure-free. We typically have several clinical trials going on at any time. Our doctors are:

  • searching for and testing new anti-seizure drugs
  • developing better methods for diagnosing and treating seizures
  • looking for ways to prevent other conditions from triggering seizures
  • evaluating new imaging techniques that help surgeons avoid damaging functional brain tissue

Why Is My Newborn Puppy Having Seizures

Seizures may be a sign of hypoglycemia in newborn puppies. This is because substantial changes in blood sugar can affect the excitability of nerve cells in the body. As well as this, your puppys brain needs glucose to function properly, but it cannot store it efficiently yet. Thus, a sudden lowering of a puppys blood sugar can cause seizures regardless of whether or not they have epilepsy, and the brain is easily affected. These seizures may involve the entire body and can include a loss of consciousness. Other clinical signs of hypoglycemia in puppies include muscle tremors, weakness, altered mentation, and lack of appetite.

With that being said, not all seizures in newborn puppies are caused by hypoglycemia. Other possibilities include neonatal encephalopathy, liver shunts, and hydrocephalus. Infections whilst in the uterus or after birth can lead to brain damage, thus causing seizures and coordination difficulties.

Little But Fierce Warrior Kate

In July 2020, Kate underwent a brain surgery called a left temporal lobectomy. During the procedure, , a neurosurgeon with Atrium Healths partners at Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, removed the precise part of Kates brain where her seizures started.

It was a success: Kate hasnt had a seizure since the surgery, now more than a year ago. Still, there were moments during her recovery that Katie and Matt questioned whether theyd made the right decision.

When Kate first woke up after her procedure, her parents were relieved to find her fierce personality intact. But the right side of Kates body, which had always been slightly weaker as a result of her stroke, wasnt moving at all.

I completely lost it, Katie says.

Though it wasnt easy, Kates care team encouraged her parents to be patient. Her brain was still swollen and needed time to recover. Kate was admitted to inpatient rehabilitation at LCH, where she stayed for a week to work on getting her strength back.

Katie and Matt took turns staying overnight with Kate at the hospital. Three days after surgery, something amazing happened.

I remember holding Kate and feeling just a little bit of push from her right arm, Matt says. When Katie got to the hospital that day, he told her what hed felt. It seemed like a good sign.

She had two brain surgeries before she turned 2 years old, Katie says. We call her Warrior Kate because she’s overcome so much.

What Are Treatments For Baby Seizures

Infant Suffers Up to Fifty Seizures One Day and Zero the Next

The treatment for any seizure depends on when the seizures begin, how severe they are, and what is causing them.

However, even types of seizures that stop on their own during the infant stage specifically neonatal seizures and some infant seizures put the baby at a higher risk for developing epilepsy later on during childhood. For this reason, doctors often treat babies who have had seizures with antiseizure medication to help reduce the risk of damage from subsequent seizures.

Anticonvulsant medications that your doctor may prescribe include:

In babies hospitalized for seizures, continuing antiseizure medication after discharge had the same risk of developing epilepsy by age 2 when compared with babies who did not receive ongoing anticonvulsant treatment. This raises questions among researchers about whether doctors should stop antiseizure medications once a babys seizures have resolved.

Your doctor will discuss all of your babys treatment options in the context of their specific diagnosis so you can develop the right seizure management plan for your family.

Neonatal Seizures What Causes Seizures In A Newborn And Is A Seizure The Sign Of Medical Malpractice

Neonatal seizures are caused by abnormal and excessive electrical activity in the brain. Most seizures occur within the first week of a babys life, and they often are a result of a birth injury that transpired during delivery. The injuries causing seizures can be avoidable thus when they occur, they may be a result of negligent care during the birth process.

If negligent care was administered during delivery, or if a doctor, nurse, or other medical personnel failed to address a neonatal seizure and your child suffered a permanent injury, your child may be entitled to compensation for the pain and suffering, damages, and other injuries that result .

We can help in cases of suspected birth injury due to medical malpractice. We retain physicians and other medical experts to carefully review the medical charts and other matters associated with the cases of our clients. If it appears that medical malpractice likely occurred, we pursue healthcare providers for the full damages caused by their negligence.

We advance the costs of litigation these costs are then typically repaid through a settlement or successful trial award. We represent clients in birth injury cases on a contingency fee basis, which means that we are only entitled to a fee if we are successful in obtaining compensation.

Signs And Symptoms Of Infant Seizures

What makes identifying infant seizures sometimes difficult is distinguishing behavioral signs. Some symptoms of infant seizures are similar to normal behaviors. Behaviors like chewing motions and bicycling movements also occur in healthy newborns.

Testing is essential to confirm the diagnosis of a seizure disorder. Newborn seizures can be very difficult to diagnose because the seizure event itself may be short and subtle, or can be easily attributed to the normal movements and behaviors of healthy babies.

The four different types of infant seizures, and the signs and symptoms associated, differ with each type. Consider the following symptom breakdown:
