Best Overall: Halo Cotton Sleep Sack

NEWBORN MUST HAVES | NEWBORN BABY ESSENTIALS

As the holy grail of sleep sacks, Halo’s wearable blanket goes beyond expectations without breaking the bank. The under-$25 sleep sack is made of 100 percent cotton, so it’s gentle on delicate skin, and has an inverted zipper that closes from the bottom for seamless changing. Available in sizes small, medium, and large, it’s designed to leave enough room for leg movement but secure enough to stay on. “Use the weight and height guide to help for sizing, it is accurate,” one reviewer said. On chilly nights, you can add a long sleeve underneath the sleeveless design.

Health And Safety Checklist

Itâs good to have some essentials at home in case you need to take your little oneâs temperature or put an adhesive bandage on a small scratch. These are some basic items to have at home:

â First-aid kit. You’ll want to have basic items at home like a baby thermometer, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, adhesive bandages, and petroleum jelly, all in one place. You may wish to have another first-aid kit in the car or in the diaper bag so that you have some of these essentials when youâre on the go as well.

â Bulb syringe. This can help gently remove mucus from your babyâs nose.

â Nail clippers or a soft emery board. Your little oneâs nails will need trimming from time to time, and doing this will also help prevent him scratching himself.

â Soft-bristled hairbrush. Even if your little one doesnât have much hair, a brush can help loosen scales if your newborn ends up with cradle cap.

â Sunscreen. Generally speaking, your little one should be kept out of direct sunlight for at least the first six months. However, a little sunscreen may be applied to exposed small areas like the face and hands if adequate clothing and/or shade isn’t available.

â Gentle detergent. This can be used to wash all of your newbornâs clothes and bedding for the first few months. If your babyâs skin shows any signs of irritation, you can try a hypoallergenic detergent, perhaps one designed especially for babies.

Baby Fingernail Clippers/baby Mittens

Cutting your newborns fingernails is a little tricky, so wait a few weeks before trimming their nails to avoid clipping them too short and breaking the skin.

In the meantime, use baby mittens to protect your little ones face from getting scratched until youre able to trim their nails with baby fingernail clippers.

Your peanut starts growing nails during week 12 of pregnancy, and they pretty much never stop growing from there. Trimming or filing baby’s nails can be tricky and a chore to maintain.

These scratch-proof mittens keep your little one’s hands covered and are an easy solution to prevent scratches on her sweet face. The mitts are made of soft 100 percent cotton, come in a variety of colors and are machine washable. Plus, the gentle elastic helps them stay put on her tiny hands and wrists. You’ll get three pairs in a package.

How Many Baby Gifts Should You Register For

Baby Essentials 0

I find that its better to register for MORE items than not. A good rule of thumb is to register for a variety of gift types in a wide range of prices and to register for two gifts per guest you expect to attend your baby shower. If you work in an office or have more than one circle of friends, you may find that you need enough items for TWO baby showers worth of guests.

The number of items doesnt matter as much as having a good variety for all the different people who may want to buy you a gift. If an item is too expensive, then several people may decide to combine funds to purchase it.

What Newborn Must Haves Should I Get

When I had my first baby, I used one of those comprehensive what to buy for baby checklists that they give you when you create your registry. I put everything on it and got most of it at my showers.

However, I quickly found I actually needed way less than I thought. And the more babies I had, the less I needed each time. You just get really good at stocking up on the necessities and forget the rest! You will likely find the same happening to you.

If you are having your FIRST baby, I wanted to give you a very realistic view of stuff you should get before the baby arrives. I hope you find it helpful!

Things I Thought I Would Use But Didnt

  • Breast Pads. I thought everyone who breastfeeds leaks. Dont get me wrong, Im happy that I havent had to use them, but these breastfeeding pads have not been necessary! For me personally, I havent had any leaking happening. Maybe save your money and purchase just a few, incase youre the same as me. You can always stock up on more after baby arrives, if needed.
  • Hakaa Breast Pump with Suction I also didnt end up using the Hakaa which made me so sad because every Mom seems to highly recommend it! Its a silicone device that you can suction to your other nipple while breastfeeding to catch excess milk.
  • Pacifiers! I stocked up on SO many pacifiers.and sage does not like them! The only ones she took are the newborn pacifiers from Philips Avent. Shes not really into it! At least its one less thing Ill have to wean her off of in the future.
  • There you have it all of our newborn essentials and must-have baby products! I hope that this blog post is helpful, and gives you a starting point if youre feeling overwhelmed. We spent so much time researching what to get for Baby Sage, and have been very happy with all of the products I mentioned in this post.

Everyone Will Tell You: Baby Toys Are A Good Distraction

Newborn Essentials and Must Haves | first time mom

No one will tell you: Youll want to secure them to whatever baby is sitting in.

Teethers, rattles, clutching toys and other fun playthings are a great way to stimulate babys senses and boost healthy developmentnot to mention keep little ones entertained when youre busy tending to other important matters, like making your second pot of coffee. But just because you hand baby a toy doesnt mean itll stay in their hands . If youre not exactly in the mood to play fetch all day, pick up a few toy straps to attach items to your childs stroller, car seat and high chair.

Can You Have A Baby Registry Without A Baby Shower

I find that even if you dont have an official baby shower, people are excited to buy gifts for you when youre pregnant. Creating a registry even if you arent going to have a shower is a good idea. That way you can send a link to a list of your favorite items. This also helps avoid receiving duplicate items.

Baby Checklist For 0 To 3 Months Old

This is the biggest list, because youre buying items that will last well into babys first year. And you wont want to run out on emergency shopping trips after bringing baby home from the hospital.

Aim to have the 0-to-3-month items purchased at least a month before the due date. If youre considering any delivery services, such as Amazon Mom for diaper and formula deliveries, nows the time to set them up, too.

    Burp cloths

Bunting or snowsuit, depending on the season and your location

    Hats

Infant rocker, bouncing chair or age-appropriate swing

Toys: At this age, baby cant use his hands for grabbing, but high-contrast colors and patterns get his attention. Visual stimulation, such as a mobile above his crib, and soft music are best.

Budget tip: If you purchase a stroller, crib or high chair secondhand, make sure it’s safe. Examine all buckles, harnesses and moving parts, and perform a quick search on the Consumer Product Safety Commission‘s website to see if the product was involved in a recall.

We dont recommend buying a used car seat because of the possibility that its safety has been compromised as the result of a car crash, but local law enforcement agencies often inspect them for free, so take advantage of this option if you must buy used.

Feeding: Accessories For Nursing Or Bottle Feeding

  • Breast Pump Breastfeeding moms are likely to need one of the best breast pumps on hand. A quality hand pump or a comprehensive electric breast pump system will support moms to establish a stock of expressed milk for partner feedings. Additionally, supplementary pumping can support a mothers milk production. Manual pumps require mothers to use one hand for controlling the pump flow, so these models are limited to single breast expression. Alternatively, electric pump models are available in both single and double breast expression designs, which can cut pumping time in half. This can be extremely helpful for working moms, or mothers who need to build a large stock of milk.
  • Breast milk storage bags Expressed breast milk can be stored in both the refrigerator and the freezer. The Mayo Clinic reminds mothers to not use disposable bottle liners or plastic bags designed for general household use for breast milk storage. General use bags are not always secure enough for milk storage and freezing. Additionally, there is no guaranteed free of chemicals that may be harmful to baby. Specially designed breast milk storage bags are pre-sterilized and BPA and BPS free for safe refrigeration and freezing. These storage bags are designed with convenient ounce markers for measurement, and some can attach directly to branded pumps. Many breast milk storage bags include a secure, double zipper design or twist off top.
    • Excessive gas and/ or fussiness at feedings
    • Very loose, watery stools
