Are There Foods To Avoid While Breastfeeding
Reports of what elimination diets actually achieve are anecdotal, and yet, online posts linking diet restrictions to improved baby behaviour spread like wildfire on social media and in moms groups. Most of us know someone who has tinkered with her diet in hopes it would help her babyor have experimented with this ourselves.
Melanie Hnatiuk, a Calgary-based family physician, noticed such a strong pattern of restrictive diets among breastfeeding mothers in her family practice that she and her colleagues launched a study. We noticed women were making some pretty dramatic dietary changes, and there was really not enough evidence to support that, Hnatiuk says, adding that nutritional deprivation can have negative consequences for maternal health that mothers often dont consider. The results, published this past March in Canadian Family Physician, showed that of 21 mothers interviewed, most believed their babies crying and fussing was a result of abdominal pain that was caused by something the mothers ate or drank. But there is simply not enough evidence to support elimination diets or foods to avoid while breastfeeding, Hnatiuk says. There are some studies, but theyre not convincing enough to support elimination diets, in my view.

Gas is completely normal for both babies and adults. Its a byproduct of your gastrointestinal system and isnt cause for concern. However, as we all know, sometimes gas can be uncomfortable. When it happens to adults, we can take an over the counter medication to help ease discomfort but when it happens to babies, its a little different.
Babies cant directly tell you whats wrong. The way they communicate is through crying or getting fussy. If you notice a trend where your baby gets fussy after breastfeeding, its likely because something youre eating is upsetting their stomach. Here are some common foods that make breastfeeding babies fussy:
Dairy is the most likely culprit behind fussiness. Cows milk is much harder for underdeveloped bodies to digest and can cause excess gas or discomfort in babies. When you drink milk caseins, the proteins found in dairy, pass through your blood and into your breast milk.2 Newborns and young babies cannot digest caseins, so they become fussy and gassy.2 If your baby is a little older and theyre still getting fussy from dairy, it could be because of an allergy. Try eliminating all forms of processed dairy and see if it makes a difference.
Soy is another common allergen that babies react to.2 Many mothers equate fussiness with their soy intake, so if youre dairy-free and using soy alternatives, youll need to consider a different alternative.

Can I Drink Alcohol While Breastfeeding
While breastfeeding, there are a few things you should really do without. These include nicotine and drugs of all kinds. Only consume alcohol in minimal quantities, and wait until your child is older and no longer exclusively breastfed. You might want to try some delicious mocktails while you’re breastfeeding!

Experts say its rare for even the most colicky babies to have an actual food allergy underpinning their fussing. Babies who do have a cows milk protein allergy have other symptoms to watch for, such as low weight gain, skin rashes, respiratory issues, diarrhea, vomiting or bloody stools. Different studies show different numbers, but its likely that less than 5 percent of colicky infants have cows milk protein allergy, says Hnatiuk. An elimination diet should only be tried on the advice of a doctor, working closely with medical on a very specific protocol for a two-week trialdont make sweeping changes on your own.
Karges often encourages breastfeeding mothers to widen, rather than restrict, their diets, but she knows that many parents struggle with accepting that advice.
