7 Sleep Tips for Newborns: Help Your Newborn Sleep

When considering how to put a baby to sleep, timing is just as important as a routine. At around 8 weeks, babies have a rise in melatonin, a drowsy-making hormone the body releases when its time for sleep, which means theyre ready for an early bedtime consistent with the sun setting, says Turgeon. If you keep them up late instead, they become overstimulated and harder to put down.

Melatonin levels rise somewhere around sundown, but given that sundown can be anytime from 4:30 in winter to 8:30 in summer, stick to the clock and put your baby down around 6:30 or 7 p.m. for the most success. If the sun is still up, close the shades.

A good sign of drowsiness is when the baby becomes calmtheyre less active, have a bored look, or just stare off, says Turgeon. Dont mistake this behavior as happiness for being awake. Seize the moment and start your bedtime routine. The babys internal clock is telling them when to be awake and when to be asleep, and you want to reinforce that, she notes.

Should I Put My Newborn Baby On A Sleep Schedule

No. It’s normal for your newborn baby to have an irregular sleep pattern. Part of that comes from the need to eat frequently and sleep a lot. Most experts recommend following your baby’s cues during the first weeks of their life, including feeding them on demand.

Still, you can start to follow a schedule of sorts over this first month by establishing some consistent routines, like eating, “playing,” and then sleeping. As your baby starts to sort out their sleep rhythms, having these routines in place and introducing good sleep habits can help them more easily settle into a schedule as they get older.

Getting outside into daylight, especially in the morning, will also help your newborn learn to tell day from night and start to get on a more predictable schedule.

It’s normal for babies to have irregular sleep patterns from birth to 3 months. Newborns haven’t yet developed their circadian rhythm, the internal 24-hour clock that signals to your body when it’s time to be awake and when it’s time to sleep.

Unpredictable sleep patterns are also linked to your newborn’s nutritional needs. They need to eat every two to three hours in the first month and every three to four hours in the second month. As they get older, they won’t need to eat as frequently. Most babies will be able to go through the night without a feeding anywhere from 3 to 6 months old.

Newborns will sleep sporadically throughout the day and night. It helps to have e a pattern of how you feed, change and soothe your baby in order to establish a routine.

In the early weeks of life it is common for babies to sleep on and off throughout the day and night This can be confusing as they seem tired one minute then awake again soon after.

1. Dont rush in the moment you think your baby has awakened.

As noted above, babies experience frequent arousals, but that doesnt mean they are doomed to wake up all the way every few minutes. Babies often jerk, sigh, or vocalize during partial arousals. If you avoid stimulating them during these moments, they may go back to sleep on their own.

2. Tank up the baby before you go to sleep.

3. If you feed your baby formula, try to find one that includes DHA.

DHA is a fatty acid found in fish oil and other dietary sources. Its important for brain development, and may play a role in shaping sleep patterns as well.

In one study, children who consumed low levels of DHA had reduced amount of slow-wave sleep . In another study, pregnant women with higher blood levels of DHA gave birth to babies who spent more time in quiet sleep .

DHA is found in breast milk, so its plausible that boosting a nursing mothers DHA intake could improve a newborns sleep patterns. If you use formula, it seems like a good idea to find a baby formula that contains DHA.

Look Out For Tired Signs

Babies will show signs when they are getting tired such as grimacing, yawning, grizzling, frowning, sucking, staring, snuggling in, jerky movements, becoming over active, clenching fists, rubbing eyes, fussiness or crying. How Much Sleep Do Babies Need

Sleep patterns will change over the first year of a babys life, including the number of hours of sleep needed and the duration of sleep periods throughout the day and night.

  • 0 to 3 months: Its normal for newborns to spend 14 to 17 hours asleep in a 24-hour day, broken into shorter periods to accommodate feeding, diaper changes, and interaction with their family. Breastfed infants usually need to eat more frequently than bottle-fed infants, about every 2 hours versus every 3 hours. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine advises parents not to worry if their newborns sleep pattern doesnt match the projections, as these amounts can vary before the first 4 months.
  • 3 to 6 months: Starting at around 3 months of age, an infants daily sleep needs drop to 12 to 15 hours. Around this time, sleep also starts consolidating into longer periods as babies are able to go longer without feeding. Sometime during this period is when most babies start to sleep through the night, though there are exceptions to the rule.
  • 6 to 12 months: From 6 months onward, babies do the bulk of their sleeping at night. However, other issues such as teething, growth spurts, illnesses, or sleep regressions may start leading to nighttime awakenings. Parents may opt to use more specific sleep-training strategies if babies arent sleeping through the night at this stage.

According to Dr. Winter, highly anxious people tend to sleep less soundly than those who have fewer worries, and they may also underestimate how much sleep they’re actually gettingsometimes by many hours. So, how do you know stress or anxiety could be compromising your ability to sleep like a baby? Dr. Winter says to look for the following six signs.

    Settling Babies Aged 0 To 6 Months

    Babies need to learn the skill of going to sleep and parents can help.

    In the first 6 months, you could try holding your baby in your arms until they fall asleep. Use gentle rhythmic patting, rocking, stroking, talking, or softly singing before putting your baby into the cot asleep. These repetitions signal relaxation and sleep.

    You could also try ‘hands-on settling’, where you place the baby in the cot awake and gently pat or stroke them till they fall asleep, comforting them with gentle ‘ssshhh’ sounds.

    If your baby becomes or stays distressed, pick them up for a cuddle until calm or asleep before putting your baby back in the cot. Stay with them until they fall asleep.

    Safe Sleeping Where Should Your Baby Sleep

    It’s up to you where your baby sleeps, but it is recommended that babies sleep in a cot in the same room as an adult for the first 6 to 12 months, since this has been shown to lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome .

    Always place a baby to sleep on their back with the head and face uncovered every time they sleep, night or day. Keep the room smoke-free.

    What A Newborn Sleep Schedule May Look Like

    As a newborn, your baby will sleep for one to four hours at a time around the clock. Here’s what a day’s sleep may look like:

    • 6 a.m.: Wake, change diaper, and eat
    • 7:30 a.m.: Morning nap
    • 9 a.m.: Wake, change diaper, and eat

    Safe Sleep Practices For Infants

    • Practice the ABCs of safe sleep: Babies should always sleep Alone, on their Backs, in a Crib. Place your baby on his or her back for every sleep, night time and nap time.

    • Do not put your baby to sleep on his side or tummy.

    • Once your baby can roll from his back to tummy and tummy to back, your baby can stay in the sleep position that he assumes. But always place your baby to sleep on his back.

    • Place your baby on a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib with slats no greater than 2-3/8 inches apart.

    • Make sure your babys face and head stay uncovered and clear of blankets and other coverings during sleep. If a blanket is used make sure your baby is placed feet-to-foot in the crib. Remove all pillows from the crib.

    • Create a smoke-free-zone around your baby.

    • Avoid overheating during sleep and maintain your babys bedroom at a temperature comfortable for an average adult.

    • Remove all mobiles and hanging crib toys by about the age of 5 months, when your baby begins to pull up in the crib.

    • Remove crib bumpers by about 12 months, when your baby can begin to climb
