How Hot Should The Water Be
The water temperature to bathe your baby should be warm, never hot. The ideal temperature is 98.6°F . You can use a bath thermometer to monitor the temperature, or check the water with your wrist or elbow to confirm its warm and not hot.
Also, check different sides of the tub or baby bath to confirm there are no hot spots. If using a tub or basin, turn on the cold water first and then the hot water to fill it.
If you live in a house, you can also adjust the water heater to ensure it doesnt go above 120°F , which can badly scald your babys skin. You likely cant adjust the water heater if you live in an apartment complex or condo.
Monitor Your Baby Closely
Keep a close eye on your little one and make sure theyre enjoying bath time! Some newborns take to the water naturally and have a blast in the tub. On the other hand, some infants need time to get used to the feeling of being in water and being bathed.
Whatever the case may be, just monitor your baby closely. If theyre having fun, let them play in the tub for a while! If they seem uncomfortable, try to get through bathtime quickly.

The basics of bathing a baby:
- First, undress baby — cradling the head with one hand. Leave the diaper on . Wrap baby in a towel, exposing only those areas that you are washing.
- Using a baby bath sponge or wash cloth, cleanse one area at a time. Start behind the ears, then move to the neck, elbows, knees, between fingers and toes. Pay attention to creases under the arms, behind the ears, around the neck.
- The hair comes toward the end of bath time so baby doesn’t get cold. While newborns don’t have much hair, you can sponge the few wisps that are there. To avoid getting eyes wet, tip the head back just a little. There’s no need for shampoo just use water.
- Now it’s time to remove the diaper and sponge baby’s belly, bottom, and genitals.
- Wash little girls from front to back. If there’s a little vaginal discharge, don’t worry — and don’t try to wipe it all away. If a little boy is uncircumcised, leave the foreskin alone. If circumcised, don’t wash the head of the until it’s healed.
- Gently pat baby dry. Rubbing the skin will irritate it.
Bath time is over, and your fresh little baby is ready for a clean diaper and clothes!

Whats In The Diaper Bag
Depending upon how close a mother is to her delivery date, her diaper bag might be packed and ready to go with items her baby will need. Why not use the bag to be part of the party festivities?
Have the baby shower guests grab a piece of paper and a pen, or provide them a list beforehand from a company such as strawberry & hearts. Then with a five-minute time limit, have them write down everything they believe is in the bag. The person who comes up with the most amount of items in the bag is the winner!

Keep Your Babys Face From Being Doused
Especially when youre first showering your baby, youll want to keep their face from being doused with water. I like to hold Penellope upright, against my shoulder and scoop water onto her head and then apply soap.
Initially, I repeated that same process to wash the soap out. Now that shes a little older, I take her up the water shaft. With my hands tucked firmly under her armpits, I raise her up through the spray, keeping her face towards mine and just outside of the water.
My mom swears washing a babys head this way makes them less afraid of the water and swimming. But honestly, who knows?
If Your Newborn Hates The Bath
You may think you are doing something wrong if your little one cries or otherwise protests during bath time. However, many newborns dislike being bathed at first.
One reason some babies resist bath time is that they dont like the sudden temperature change. You can lessen this transition by slowly getting your baby into the water. Wrap them in a towel at first and gradually immerse them in the water, keeping the towel on until they are all the way in.
You can also experiment with water temperatures to see what your baby likes best. And always have a warm towel ready when they come out so that the air on their wet skin doesn’t feel too jarring.
Some newborns tolerate baths better if you are holding them. As a result, many parents decide to bathe with their babies in their arms. This can be a wonderful bonding experience, but remember to keep safety in mind. Only bathe with your baby when you are fully alert, make sure you have a towel ready, and possibly another grown-up to hand your baby to when you are done. And dont use soaps and other bath products geared toward adult skin.
Finally, keep bath time fun for your baby! Newborns cant play with bath toys yet, but that doesnt mean they cant be entertained by them. Funny faces and games of peek-a-boo can be very helpful as well.

Dont Forget All The Easy
Newborns have an abundance of adorable folds and rolls, which can be easy to miss when you’re bathing them. Specifically, make sure to wash the folds around your newborns neck, wrists, knees, and elbows.
And dont forget to clean behind your babys ears, as well as in-between their fingers and toes. Wash your babys genitals and diaper area thoroughly. Its extremely important to clean this area well, but this task should always be left for last.
That way, any bacteria or germs that get washed off wont dirty other areas of your loved ones body, which helps prevent rashes and other skin conditions.
How Frequently To Bathe Newborns
The AAP recommends bathing your infant three times a week until their first birthday. Obviously there are unique messes that babies can find themselves in as they get older and more mobile that may require an extra bath from time to time, says Dr. Grant. But in general, this rule is sufficient as long as the diaper area is cleaned appropriately at each diaper change.

When To Give Bath A Baby
Most hospitals will let you bathe your baby immediately after birth. However, some hospitals prefer that you wait until the second day. If this is the case at your hospital, dont worry. Your baby will still be fine.
The goal of bathing your newborn is to make sure they are clean and comfortable. Its important not to feel pressured into using anything too special on their skin since babies skin tends to be sensitive and can become irritated easily. After all, its just a bathyoure not trying out for Americas Got Talent.
- Bathing should happen within 24 hours of birth: Studies show that bathing within 24 hours keeps babies cleaner and healthier than if they wait longer than that first day after birth.
-Parents should give their children baths: Parental involvement makes people feel more comfortable with whats happening around them.
-Babies should be bathed in warm rooms but not hot ones: The ideal temperature range for bathing newborns is between 68°F72°F .
A little bit warmer than room temperature feels good on bare skin when youre wet already because there isnt much airflow around you however, it can cause dehydration if it gets too high.
-Baths should be short and simple: Completing all tasks involved in planning a bath takes time away from other activities like sleeping or breastfeeding with mommy.
-Mild soap should be used during each wash
What Steps Should I Take To Keep My Baby Safe In The Bath
- Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a minute. Babies and children can drown in just a few centimetres of water and should never be left unsupervised in and around water.
- Fill the bath with comfortably warm water. Check the temperature with your wrist or elbow before placing your baby gently into the bath.
- Keep your babys head and face clear of the water.
- Empty the bath water out as soon as youve finished. This is a good habit to get into before your baby becomes mobile. Babies can drown in only a few centimetres of water. Consider doing a resuscitation course.
- Make bath time a happy event and try not to rush it. Watch for your babys responses and talk gently to them.
