How to Make Your Baby Sleep Well at Night (Easy Tips)

When women are pregnant, babys sleep schedule has a lot to do with moms movements. When mom is up and about, the motion lulls baby to sleep. When mom is sleeping, baby is ready to party!

In the womb, babies also rely on mamas melatonin to help them sleep. Once out in the real world, babies bodies have to learn to regulate themselves. The trouble? Their internal clock is all out of whack, since they were generally sleeping during the day and moving around at night .

It can take baby about three months to regulate their own melatonin production. But, in the meantime, you can help your baby establish good sleep habits by teaching them how to align their days and nights correctly:

  • First thing in the morning, expose your child to natural sunlight . The point is you want his eyes exposed to the light as this can help set his circadian rhythm for the day.
  • During the day, keep the blinds open, turn on lights, and continue with the regular sounds of day-to-day life. If you can, get baby outside as much as possible.
  • Once the sun sets, dim the lights. Avoid baby seeing any TV screens or iPhones. Encourage the evening atmosphere with darkness and calm, and quiet noises and sounds. ?
  • If youre really desperate, and youre nursing, you can drink tart cherry juice as baby may get some of the melatonin benefits through your milk.

When To Set Up A Sleep Routine

Itâs never too early to think about adding structure around your babyâs sleep, but keep in mind that it may be several months before your baby has a predictable sleep pattern.Newborns donât yet know the difference between day and night and their circadian rhythms are still developing. And because their stomachs are so small, newborns can only go for a few hours before they need to be fed again, even during the night.At this early stage, itâs more important to cater to your babyâs feeding and sleep needs , rather than pushing a strict sleep schedule onto your little one. Look out for your babyâs drowsy periods and encourage sleep then.If you want, you can start keeping track of when your baby sleeps and feeds, and begin to put together a bedtime routine that you could follow consistently. How Long Will My Baby Sleep

Because babies this age are more awake, alert, and aware of their surroundings during daylight hours, they’re more likely to be tired at night and sleep. But the range of normal is still very wide.

Infants up to 3 months old should get 1417 hours of sleep over a 24-hour period, says the National Sleep Foundation. Many will have settled into a daily sleep routine of 2-3 naps during the day, followed by a longer “sleeping through the night” stretch after a late-night feeding.

Keep The Calories Coming During The Day

Your baby will be less hungry at night if his tummy gets filled enough during the day. Breastfed babies should eat every two to three hours or so, for a total of eight to 12 feedings over 24 hours, until they start solids around 6 months. It then drops to five to six feedings a day and gradually tapers off as they get older.

Most formula-fed babies should get around 4 ounces every four hours beginning when they’re about a month old, though it depends on your little one . Expect that to increase to around 6 to 8 ounces by the time they starts solids at 4 to 6 months old.

Once solid food is introduced, babies need around four to five formula feedings a day. You can try adding an extra ounce or two to babys bottle during daytime feedings if he’s taking less than the recommended 24 to 36 ounces overall.

Helping Your Baby To Sleep

Some babies sleep much more than others. Some sleep for long periods, others in short bursts. Some soon sleep through the night, while some don’t for a long time.

Your baby will have their own pattern of waking and sleeping, and it’s unlikely to be the same as other babies you know.

It’s also unlikely to fit in with your need for sleep. Try to sleep when your baby sleeps.

If you’re breastfeeding, in the early weeks your baby is likely to doze off for short periods during a feed. Carry on feeding until you think your baby has finished or until they’re fully asleep. This is a good opportunity to try to get a bit of rest yourself.

Myth: Some Babies Dont Like Being Swaddled

FACT:Swaddling babies younger than 4-5 months has been proven time and time again to assist them in settling to sleep and sleeping for longer stretches. This is because the swaddle helped to suppress their startle reflex.

Some babies can struggle or cry when being swaddled though and parents assume this means their baby doesnt like being swaddled. Usually though, it is because the baby is already overtired, the swaddle is the wrong type for them , or its too big.

If your baby is under than 4-5 months and not rolling yet, it’s worth persevering to find a swaddle that works for them. If your baby is already rolling, try an arms-out baby sleeping bag or sleep sack instead.

Feed Them Frequently During The Daytime

How can I get my newborn to sleep at night?

Feed your baby every two hours or on-demand during the daytime. The more they feed during the day less they will ask at night. Feeding every two hours also helps limit their daytime nap.

Sleeping long stretch during the day affect nighttime sleep. Limit their naps to 2-2.5 hours at a time. You do not have to set an alarm clock or wake up your baby when overtired or need a recovery sleep. You can judge the situation, adjust the time accordingly, and then go back to the routine of 2-2.5 hours of nap during the day.

Newborn Sleep Clothing Donts:

Any clothing that is loose could potentially creep over a babys face and should be avoided. Do not use clothing with hoods or loose strings or fabric.

Overheating baby with too many layers can be dangerous. As new parents, my husband once put our 5-month-old daughter to sleep for a nap swaddled in a polar fleece blanket. When she awoke, he found her red, sweating, listless, and vomiting. He instantly realized she was overheating, and rushed to cool her off. Fortunately all was well, but I share this so that you can be aware that overheating happens, and it doesnt take very long.

Fortunately, you can prevent overheating. Make sure you dont put too many warm layers of clothing on baby. Also, avoid blankets that are too warm or thick. If your baby is sweating, remove some of his clothing.

Swaddle blankets also need to be properly wrapped to keep baby from pulling the blanket over his face. Additionally, swaddles should not be so tight they constrict breathing .

Gassy Baby Sleep On Incline

There is no one definitive answer to this question, as each baby is different and will respond differently to sleeping on an incline. Some parents find that their babys gas symptoms improve when they sleep on an incline, while others find that it makes no difference. If you are concerned about your babys gas symptoms, speak to your pediatrician for advice on the best sleeping position for your child.

Helping Your Baby Sleep

If you haven’t already, start a bedtime routine that will be familiar and relaxing for your baby. Bathing, reading, and singing can soothe babies and signal an end to the day. Some babies like to be swaddled . This is OK until they start to roll . Be consistent and your baby will soon associate these steps with sleeping.

If you rock your baby to sleep before bedtime, your little one may expect to be rocked to sleep after nighttime awakenings. Instead, try putting your baby into a crib or bassinet while drowsy but still awake. This way your baby will learn to fall asleep on their own.

Some babies squirm, whine, and even cry a little before falling back to sleep on their own. Unless you think that your baby is hungry or ill, see what happens if you leave your baby alone for a few minutes they might settle down.

If your baby wakes during the period that you want them to sleep, keep activity to a minimum. Try to keep the lights low and resist the urge to play with or talk to your baby. Change or feed your baby and then return your little one to the crib or bassinet.

This ones pretty easy to follow: dont use crib bumpers. They are a SIDS risk, the sale of them is even banned in some US states, and doctors have been lobbying against crib bumpers for years. Yes, some babies flail around a lot in their sleep, especially when theyre on the verge of learning to roll, crawl, or walk. But they probably wont seriously injure themselves by bumping their heads on a crib rail. While those breathable mesh bumpers do a good job of keeping soothers from poking out of the crib slats, they are not recommended due to the risk of entanglement and strangulation. And while were at it, you shouldnt use a DockATot or infant lounger for unsupervised sleep inside the crib, either. Theyre technically no longer available in Canada, but similar products are still on the market.

How Long Might Older Babies Sleep For

By the time babies are about three months old, around half may sleep for about five hours during the night . Between three and six months the balance of light and deep sleep becomes more organised, so babies settle more easily .

As babies get a bit bigger, youll notice that their sleep time will decrease to around 15 hours by 12 months. Most of that sleep will be at night and the rest during one or two daytime naps .

Although, just to let you know, night time waking might not disappear completely. It is still normal behaviour after three months and 27% of one year olds still wake in the night .
