Restless Sleep Due To Frequent Late

What it looks like: Most 2- to 3-month-old babies, particularly breastfed ones, still need to fill their tummies at least once or twice during the night. Waking up every two hours for middle-of-the-night chow-downs, on the other hand, is typically too much of a good thing by this point and for most babies, not necessary.

What to do about it: First, talk to your childs pediatrician about how often baby should be eating overnight.   • Make sure your babys face and head stay uncovered and clear of blankets and other coverings during sleep. If a blanket is used make sure your baby is placed feet-to-foot in the crib. Remove all pillows from the crib.

  • Create a smoke-free-zone around your baby.

  • Avoid overheating during sleep and maintain your babys bedroom at a temperature comfortable for an average adult.

  • Remove all mobiles and hanging crib toys by about the age of 5 months, when your baby begins to pull up in the crib.

  • Remove crib bumpers by about 12 months, when your baby can begin to climb

How to put a baby to sleep in less than ONE MINUTE

If youre concerned about your babys sleep, it can be a good idea to track your babys sleep for a week or so. This can help you get a clear picture of whats going on.

You can do this by drawing up a simple chart with columns for each day of the week. Divide the days into hourly blocks, and colour the intervals when your baby is asleep. Keep your chart for 5-7 days.

Once completed, the chart will tell you things like:

  • when and how much sleep your baby is getting
  • how many times your baby is waking during the night
  • how long your baby is taking to settle after waking.

You can also record how you tried to resettle your baby and what worked or didnt work.

Then you can compare the information in your chart with the general information about baby sleep needs above:

  • How does your child compare to other babies the same age? If your baby is wakeful and grizzly and getting much less sleep than others, your baby might need more opportunities for sleep.
  • How many times is your baby over six months old waking up during the night? If its 3-4 times a night or more, you might be feeling very tired. You might want to think about phasing out some of your babys sleep habits.

The Importance Of Routine

Routine is a tricky word because it can imply a very rigid regimental pattern to your day and certainly for very young babies, we know that’s not always entirely possible and it’s not something we would even really advise.

But, in saying that, an element of structure is quite important for a baby or toddler of any age and definitely during this tricky 3-6 month age bracket.

If you think about it like this, we all have routines we follow every day. You yourself might have a morning ritual of getting up, making a coffee, having some toast and reading the newspaper before jumping in the shower. We find these situations comforting and relaxing because of their familiarity.

Babies are no different. This is why so many babies thrive on having a good reliable pattern to their entire day – feeding and napping at predictable times.

Having a bedtime sleep routine for your baby also helps to signal to them that sleep is approaching. This routine will become crucial to them settling well during day-time naps and bedtime.

How Long Will My Baby Sleep

Because babies this age are more awake, alert, and aware of their surroundings during daylight hours, theyre more likely to be tired at night and sleep. But the range of normal is still very wide.

Infants up to 3 months old should get 1417 hours of sleep over a 24-hour period, says the National Sleep Foundation. Many will have settled into a daily sleep routine of two or three naps during the day, followed by a longer sleeping through the night stretch after a late-night feeding.

Here are some instances where you should wake your baby:

  • They are sleeping more in the day than the night and missing their daytime feeds.
  • Donât let them go more than 4 hours without eating during the day. You may need to wake the baby up to feed at night, but it is probably better to try to change your babyâs daytime habits rather than continuing to wake them every 4 hours at night.

Your babyâs pediatrician will give you advice for your baby. For premature or special-needs babies, you may need to adjust feedings.
