Where To Get A Puppy

Newborn Puppies: Birth to 2 Weeks

Are you getting a new dog or thinking about it? We’re so excited for you and we know you’ll give your new companion a great, loving home.

Once you’ve decided you’re ready for a dog, the next big decision is where to find this lifelong family member. You’ll want to make sure to NOT get an animal from a puppy mill and that’s not always easy to recognize. Our Animal Rescue Team often deploys to rescue abused dogs from puppy mill operations in cooperation with local law enforcement.

Sadly, some places that seem like great puppy sources may not be, but if you follow our top puppy-buying tips, you’ll be far more likely to secure a healthy, well-socialized dog who doesn’t drain your emotions or your wallet.

Caring For Orphaned Newborn Puppies

The term orphaned does not always mean that the mother of the litter dies. It is also used to refer to puppies whose dam is either unable or unwilling to nurse them. If this happens, you will need to step up to the plate as nursemaid.

The best replacement milk for puppies is a commercial puppy milk formula. Cows milk does not have the same nutritional content as dogs milk and is not a suitable substitute, as it does not have enough calories, calcium, or phosphorous for growing pups. Puppy formula bags come with manufacturers instructions regarding mixing guidelines and how much to feed. If you have questions about these instructions, contact your veterinarian.

Feeding orphan puppies can be a little tricky. Some puppies take a little while to get the sucking part of feeding down. If they dont nurse right away, you may have to take them in to see the veterinarian, so that he or she can show you how to tube feed to get the puppies started.

Feeding itself is usually straightforward. Warm up the formula to body temperature and angle the bottle to prevent air bubbles. You may need to enlarge the hole in the nipple, which is best done with a hot needle while the bottle is inverted. Always feed a puppy facedown, never on its back or upright, as this could cause it to choke. Puppies should nurse enthusiastically, but not too rapidly, as this can cause indigestion. The puppies should be burped during and after each feeding.

What Should I Track In A Logbook

Maintaining a logbook about the orphaned puppies does not need to be complicated. The intent is to simply keep track of how they are doing so you can identify if there are any potential concerns with their development.

Tracking their weights, milestones, and routines are key, so be sure to record details of when their eyes open, when their teeth begin to erupt, their food intake, and stool consistency.

TIP: Individual puppies must be identified in some way, so consider colored collars or nail polish on a few front toenails.

How Do I Feed Orphaned Puppies

Most puppies will suckle on small pet nursing bottles, also known as pet nursers. When bottle fed, puppies will nurse until they are full and then reject the bottle.

Be sure the opening in the nipple restricts the outflow of fluid to one drop at a time in order to avoid a flow rate that is too rapid for the puppy. When the flow rate is too rapid, it can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, and/or death and when the flow is too slow they have to work too hard to nurse.

When feeding, hold the puppy in a horizontal, head-neutral position as it would be when feeding from its mother. If the puppy is too weak to suckle, your veterinarian can show you alternative feeding methods and assist in tube feeding if needed.

TIP: Handling puppies during feeding contributes to critical socialization.

How To Prepare Your Home For Your New Puppy

Newborn Cockapoo puppy

Puppies are essentially at a similar awareness level of a small child. Everything will seem interesting to investigate and they arent knowledgeable about items that can be dangerous. First, determine the area of your home youll place the puppy for bedtime and daytime activity. Try and keep the space limited for the first few weeks, especially if the puppy is recently weaned. Make sure theres no access to wires. Puppies love to chew and go through a similar teething process as babies. Keep all loose clothing items, shoes, and household objects out of their reach. Prepare a place for the puppy to use a puppy pad until you are able to train them to go outside.

How To Choose The Right Dogs For Sale To Fit Your Lifestyle And Personality

Researching different breeds of dogs is essential to making the right choice in a dog for you and your family. Some breeds are highly energetic, whereas others are more relaxed. Size can be important if you live in limited space. Toy breeds and smaller dogs like terriers make great companions for those living in apartments. Larger dogs generally need more room to romp and play. A few breeds of dogs prefer a more sedentary lifestyle, but more active breeds like Labrador will need to get plenty of exercise and outdoor time. Choose the breed of dog best suited to your level of activity and personality.

How Much And How Often Should I Feed Orphaned Puppies

Orphaned puppies should be fed on a strict schedule, preferably every 2-4 hours. Puppies up to two weeks old can generally consume their daily intake in 4-5 meals per day. Small breed puppies should be limited to 10-15mL per feeding during the first week of life in order to prevent diarrhea.

Commercial milk replacers are labeled to help you calculate the total volume to be fed per day. To calculate the amount for each feeding:

  • dilute the total daily volume of milk replacer to a final volume of about 180mL/kg of puppy body weight, and
  • divide that total into the desired number of meals per day.

It is recommended that you warm puppy milk replacer to approximately 100°F before feeding, but be careful not to overheat it. Cold formula, overly rapid feeding rates, and overfeeding can lead to regurgitation, aspiration, bloating, and diarrhea.

If the orphaned puppy develops diarrhea, reduce the formula volume. It is better to slightly underfeed than to overfeed neonatal orphaned puppies. Puppy milk replacer should be the sole source of nutrition until 3-4 weeks of age at which time the weaning process may begin.

The transition from formula to solid food is a gradual process, so be patient. Use a high-quality food formulated to support growth and reproduction. Introduce small amounts of semi-solid or solid food to supplement formula, and transition to solid food by 5-6 weeks of age.

How Often Do Newborn Puppies Poop

How to Bottle feeding new born puppy

Newborn puppies need help to go to the bathroom. Their mother does this by licking them, which stimulates them to urinate and defecate. If the puppies are orphaned, you can help them by dipping a washcloth or cotton ball in warm water, then gently massaging their bottoms after feeding.

It’s very important that you do this because puppies can’t do this without help until they are about 3 or 4 weeks old.

You no doubt will be wondering when newborn puppies can go outside to the bathroom and play.

Puppies need a lot of upbeat interaction with other dogsâespecially during the key socialization period when they’re between 9 and 14 weeks. But they are also susceptible to illnesses before they are fully vaccinated, which usually isn’t until they are around 16 weeks old.

Your vet likely will say it’s okay for your puppy to be outdoors in your own yard as long as you haven’t had a lot of other dogs around. But you’ll want to carry your puppy when going for walks or going in and out of the vet’s office until he’s had all his shots.

What Shall I Do If The Mother Refuses To Stay With The Puppies

This is common with pets that are closely attached to their owners. If the mother will not stay with her puppies, try relocating mother and puppies so she can be nearer to you.

“Puppies cannot maintain their own body heat for a week or two after birth.”

Make sure the puppies are kept warm. Young puppies cannot maintain their own body temperature for a week or two after birth.

As long as the puppies stay close to their mother, the room temperature is not too critical. However, if the mother leaves her puppies alone, they need to be provided with an external source of warmth. During the first four days of life, the environmental temperature where the puppies are kept should be maintained at 85-90°F . The temperature may then be gradually decreased to approximately 80°F by the seventh to tenth day, and to about 72°F by the end of the fourth week.

It is not necessary to heat the whole room to these temperatures. Heating the area over the whelping box with the aid of a heat lamp is usually all that is necessary. The larger the litter the lower the environmental temperature needs to be, since the puppies will huddle together and keep each other warm. The puppies’ behavior and condition gives an indication whether they are comfortable and healthy. If they are warm and content they will be quiet and gaining weight, otherwise they will be restless and crying.

How To Care For Your Pitbull Puppy

Like other breeds, Pitbull puppies between six and eight weeks of age should have access every couple of hours to either a gruel of puppy food and mothers milk or kibble mixed with water. Hopefully, you have a puppy over eight weeks old, and it should eat three or four times a day until the age of four months. Between four and six months old, feed three times daily. After that, feed at least two meals in a 24-hour period. Pitbulls are prone to bloat, so it is vital not to feed them huge meals. Bloat is potentially life-threatening because if the stomach distends, it can twist and disrupt heart rhythm and electrolytes. Adult Pitbulls will require about 850 to 1100 calories per day, or about 2.5 to 4 cups of high-quality food. Whether you go with dry kibble, canned wet food, or a homemade or raw diet, animal-sourced protein and fats should be your main ingredients.

Socialization and Training as Part of Care

Many perceive the Pitbull as a tough and dangerous dog, but they are sensitive companion animals who need a lot of attention. Moreover, they are very intelligent and active. The biggest problem most people have with pitbull puppies for sale is not being able to provide them with enough exercise and mental stimulation. Bored dogs become destructive, and unsocialized pets become distrustful, nervous, fearful, and possibly aggressive. Lack of training leads to no discipline. An unruly hyper dog can be frightening in any situation with any medium or large breed.
