Why Does My Baby Seem Hungrier Than Usual
As babies gain weight, they should begin to eat more at each feeding and go longer between feedings. Still, there may be times when your little one seems hungrier than usual.
Your baby may be going through a period of rapid growth . These can happen at any time, but in the early months growth spurts often occur at around:
- 7-14 days old
- 4 months
- 6 months
During these times and whenever your baby seems especially hungry, follow his or her hunger cues and continue to feed on demand, increasing the amount of formula you give as needed.
Maintain Your Milk Supply While Giving Formula
If you wish to maintain your milk supply while giving formula, you may need to breastfeed or pump frequently, up to 8 to 12 times per day. The exact number of times will depend on your breasts storage capacity and the age of your baby.
According to the N.C.T., if your baby is older around 8 or 9 months you can usually maintain your breastmilk supply alongside formula feeding, as long as you breastfeed every day.
The Department of Agriculture has tips for maintaining your milk supply while introducing formula.
Prevent Uncomfortable Engorgement Leaking And Clogged Ducts
When you start introducing formula, your breast milk production will take a few days to adjust to the reduced demand. In the interim, your breasts may become uncomfortably engorged, which can lead to embarrassing leakage, clogged ducts or even mastitis a painful infection of the breast tissue.
Thus experts generally advise introducing formula slowly, gradually replacing breastfeeding sessions with formula feeding.
One method is to replace one nursing session per week with a formula feeding session. Start by giving your baby one bottle of formula at around the same time each day. This will train your body to stop producing milk at that time.
Another way to start introducing formula, according to the National Childbirth Trust, a nonprofit based in Britain, is the top it off method, which involves giving a small amount of formula after a nursing session. The extra nourishment will make your baby feel more full, extending the time until your next nursing session and gradually reducing the amount of milk you produce at that time.
If your breasts still become engorged, you can relieve some of the pressure by pumping or hand expressing a little milk, but only until you feel relief, said Dr. Neifert. She warned against draining your breasts completely, as that signals to your breasts to continue to produce milk.

Guide For Formula Feeding
- When breast milk is not available, standard infant formula is an appropriate alternative for most healthy full term infants, but there are some differences between brands. Do not hesitate to ask your health care provider for a recommendation if you are unsure which formula to use.
- Bottle-feeding should be interactive, with the caregiver holding both the bottle and the infant. Propping a bottle has been linked to an increased risk of ear infections and tooth decay.
- Formula feeding should be in response to the infants needs and not based on a predetermined schedule. Look for cues of hunger and fullness to determine both when to feed and how much. The number of wet diapers per day and your childs growth will reflect if he or she is getting enough formula. The chart below demonstrates common intakes for infants at various stages. However, ask your health care provider if you have any questions about how much formula your infant is taking.
- The amount of formula an infant takes will decrease as the baby increases intake of solid foods, but formula remains a significant source of calories, protein, calcium and vitamin D for the first year of life.
- Ask your health care provider before switching an infant less than 1 year of age from formula to cows milk or a cows milk alternative.

How To Choose Formula
Talk with your baby’s health care provider about what formula is best for your baby. Although there are many types of formula, most babies do well with one that is cow-milk based.
Unless your baby’s health care provider advises against it, choose a formula that is iron-fortified. This is important to prevent iron deficiency, which can slow development.
Once made up, all formula must be refrigerated. Formula should be thrown out after 24 hours if it has not been used.
The different types of formula are:
- powder. This is the least expensive. It does not need to be refrigerated until it is mixed with water. If you are going to be away from home, you may choose a brand that comes in individual packets. This option is more convenient, although more costly.
- concentrated liquid. This needs to have water added to it. It is more expensive than powder. It also must be refrigerated once the container is opened.
- ready-to-use formula. This is the most convenient and the most costly. It can be handy for the times when mixing might be difficult.
How Often Should I Feed My Baby
It’s generally recommended that babies be fed whenever they seem hungry, which is called demand feeding .
Most newborns who are formula-fed feed every 2 to 3 hours. As they get bigger and their tummies can hold more milk they usually eat every 3 to 4 hours.
And if your baby is very young, or having problems gaining weight, you shouldnt go too long without feeding, even if it means waking your baby. In this case, talk to your doctor about how often your baby should be fed.

Storing And Transporting Formula Milk
Powdered formula milk isnât sterile, so only make up a feed just before using it and throw away any formula thatâs left over after a feed.
If you need to feed your baby while youâre out and about, it helps to take
-
the amount of formula powder you need for a feed, measured out into a small, clean and dry, airtight container
-
a clean vacuum flask containing just-boiled tap water
-
an empty, sterilised feeding bottle with the teat, retaining ring and cap.
When you need to make up a feed, follow the steps above. Donât forget to cool the formula and check the temperature on the inside of your wrist before feeding it to your baby.
Do Not Force Your Baby To Bottle Feed
If your baby refuses the bottle at first, do not force him to drink. Wait and try again later, an hour or two after their next feeding. Some studies have linked early overfeeding with an increased risk of later obesity.
For most healthy, full-term infants, parents can look to their baby rather than the clock for hunger cues, according to a webpage from the American Academy of Pediatrics. This is called feeding on demand, or responsive feeding.
When bottle feeding, watch for signs your baby has had enough: turning away, pushing away the bottle, spitting out milk, chewing on the nipple, gagging or falling asleep.
Unlike breast milk, leftover formula in a bottle your baby has drunk from cannot be saved. Check out this A.A.P. guide to safely preparing formula.

Preparing Safe Water For Formula
From birth until your baby is at least 6 months old, all water used for formula should be boiled and cooled to room temperature on the day you use it. Make sure you leave enough time for the boiled water to cool to room temperature before its needed.
1) Boil enough water to last the day.
- If you use an electric jug, boil a full jug until it turns off.
- If you use a stove top kettle, boil until it makes a loud whistle.
- If you are boiling water in a pot on the stove, let the water come to a rolling boil for 1 minute.
Pour boiled water into a sterilised container, cover and leave to cool to room temperature until it no longer feels warm. Store out of direct sunlight. Keep for up to 24 hours throw it away after that.
If you live in a city or a town
From 6 months of age you can use cold water straight from the tap to make formula. Run the tap for 1015 seconds before you collect the water.
If you use bore or tank water
Bore water and tank water should be boiled until your baby is 18 months old. If your water comes from a private supply , have it tested for any contaminants that could harm you and your baby. If testing shows water is high in nitrates, it is not suitable for preparing infant formula.
Bottled water
Bottled water is not recommended as it is not sterile. Like tap water, bottled water needs to be boiled then allowed to cool before it is used to prepare formula.

Combining Breastfeeding And Infant Formula Feeding
Feeding your baby any amount of breastmilk has benefits for you and your baby. You might be able to combine breastfeeding with formula feeding if you are unable to give your baby only breastmilk. Here are some tips to help you:
- Try to breastfeed first before giving formula.
- Any breastmilk has benefits to mother and baby, even if it is only a few drops.
- The more you can express or breastfeed, the more milk you will make.
Signs Your Baby Is Hungry
The guidelines above aren’t set in stone, and your infant’s formula needs may vary daily. That’s why Dr. Stockhausen recommends learning your baby’s hunger signals. “If a baby is born full-term at a healthy weight, it’s best to practice ‘on cue’ or responsive feeding,” she says. “Learning a baby’s hunger signals helps both parents and Baby realize and understand his individual needs.”
Here are some signs that Baby is hungry, according to Dr. Stockhausen:
- Moving his hands to his mouth
- Rooting
- Making sucking noises or licking lips
- Flexing his arms with clenched fists over his chest or tummy
- Crying

When Do I Start Timing Feeds
Every baby is different and their appetites vary massively, so it can be normal for them to take more or fewer feeds than the guide above suggests. Your baby won’t always wake at an exact time after their previous feed is finished. If youre able to, try and time your babys feeds from the moment you start until the beginning of the next feed . So if you feed your baby at 12 noon and they go back to sleep at 1pm, expect to feed them again at about 4pm. If your baby does follow a routine of feeding every three hours, youre going to be very busy, particularly in the early months!
Should Puppies Drink Water At Night
Your Puppy’s Water Intake During Housetraining
It’s best to remove your puppy’s water bowl at night. So, if your lights-out time is at 11 p.m., a puppy should have no food or water after about 88:30 p.m. This gives you a chance to take him out for a one last potty break before settling in for the night.

Preparing A Formula Feed
Formula should be made up fresh for each feed. Harmful bacteria can grow in prepared formula, and the longer the formula is kept before use, the greater the risk of your baby getting sick. If you are taking your babys formula feed out with you, see Feeding your baby away from home.
Always read the formula labels carefully and follow the manufacturers instructions.
- Check the use-by date located on the base of the formula can. If you have formula that is past its use-by date, throw it out.
- Make sure you have a clean surface on which to prepare the formula feed.
- Wash and dry your hands before opening the formula can.
- Always put the plastic lid back on the can after use.
- Store the formula can in a cool, dry place . Use within 4 weeks of opening.
