Apple Cider Vinegar For Chicks
ACV, or apple cider vinegar, is a home remedy that many chicken keepers swear by.
If you spike your chicks water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per gallon, you may see some positive effects.
You can encourage beneficial yeasts and bacteria to flourish in the intensities of your chick by doing this, and since its inexpensive, its recommended.
If you dont want to use ACV, for the smell or for some other reason, you can also purchase probiotics that can be dissolved in water or sprinkled on feed.
These will give your chicks a dose of the healthy gut flora that will be needed in their intestines.
Yogurt may also work, but it can cause diarrhea so use it sparingly.
Alternatives To Baby Bird Formula
Instead of a bird formula mix, you could even use baby formula or wheat cereal like farina. Or at a push, you might be able to soak dry dog food which has been known to feed baby robins quite well.
However, when feeding these products be sure to still use the syringe or dropper. Try to make sure the products are mushed down enough to pass through the dropper without getting blocked.
At first, one or two full droppers will almost certainly fill the baby robin, but as they grow theyll likely need more of it and potentially more often. Being a robin parent is a demanding job!
The baby robin will let you know when its full, usually when its hungry or wants more food it opens its mouth automatically.
Be aware of this too, do not try to feed the robin when it is not asking, as you can easily overfeed them, which is just as risky as not feeding them.
So its important to observe if the bird is full or not before trying to encourage them to eat further.

Transitioning To Growers Food
Somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks, chicks will move on from chicken mash to growers feed. This stage lasts from around 9 weeks to around 20 weeks of age, when they start to lay.
Growers feed has less protein than chicken mash, reducing to around 16%. But, it still has the same level of oils and fats, fiber, and ash.
When transitioning, change your chicks food gradually rather than all at once. Changing their diet suddenly can lead to digestive issues and upset stomachs.
Over the course of a week, gradually reduce the amount of chicken mash and replace it with growers feed.
You should use this gradual changing method later in your chickens life when changing their food to suit their laying stage. Food at this point in life will have lower levels of oils and fats, but increased amounts of ash and fiber.
Do Baby Ducks Need A Heat Lamp
A big part of keeping chicks is keeping them under a heat lamp. It might have you wondering if your ducklings need heat as well. And the truth is that they need it just as much in those early weeks as a baby chicken. When your duckling doesnt have feathers, it needs plenty of help to regulate its body temperature.
For the first week of life, your ducklings will need a toasty 90 degrees to keep them healthy and strong. After the first week, you will then start to decrease the temperature of the brooder. But how you do this depends on when you hatched your ducklings.
If your ducklings hatch in colder months, you will need a slight decrease in temperature. So in the early spring or late fall months, you will have to drop the temperature by 5 degrees every week. But if your ducks are late spring or summer clutch, you can lower the temperature by 10 degrees every week.
Once you start dropping the brooders temperature, you will continue to do so until it reaches 70 degrees. You know that your ducklings are ready to turn off the heat lamp when they dont huddle under the heat source.

Can You Make Your Own
Some people do. I don’t recommend it for the reason I’ve stated above: it’s really very important for the chick’s development that she has a properly balanced feed with exactly the required amount of protein and very low calcium.
To try to provide that yourself is a big ask. In my view, it’s better to pay for a high quality feed that you and your chicks can rely on.
Why Mess Is Good
One thing you might notice is that its pretty messy in my brooder. The chicks get feed everywhere. Thats actually a good thing because it shows that theyre eating.
One of the biggest concerns I personally had when I first started raising chicks was whether or not they would actually eat enough to grow. If they dont eat, they dont grow, which is bad. The mess tells me that theyre eating and Im happy with that.

Is It Okay To Offer Your Baby Chicks Grit
A question that frequently pops up on forums is Do recently hatched chicks need grit?. The short answer is, it depends on what else theyre eating.
If you have baby chicks that are only eating a starter mix, they probably dont need grit just yet.
On the contrary, if theyre now at the stage where youre adding in a range of supplemental food, such as scraps from your kitchen, then a bit of added grit will aid their digestive system.
Grit is just as it sounds theyre little pieces of sand, stone, or earth from your local environment.
If you are lucky enough to live in a nice temperate climate where your happy chicks wander around outside all day long, then theyll naturally peck at grit, so you probably dont have to worry.
If not and theyre couped up for large parts of the day, make sure that you put out a source of grit as it really does help with digestion.
Do Baby Chicks Need Grit Andcalcium
Theres a lot of research out there about whether baby chicks need supplemental grit and calcium.
Chicks should never be given additional calcium it can cause health problems.
When it comes to grit, the choice is up to you.
If your chicks are only eating chick starter, they probably dont need extra grit.
However, if you are giving them supplementary foods like kitchen craps, adding grit to your chicks diet may be beneficial.
If you feed grit, just make sure its small.You should use a chick-sized granite grit or parakeet grit for best results.

How Much Should You Feed Baby Chicks
Chickens are good at eating what they need. Ensure your chicks have a constant supply of organic chicken starter feed and refill their supply as needed.
Because baby chicks and adult chickens require different amounts of nutrients, its best to separate them until the chicks are at least 2 months old. Plus, older chickens tend to be aggressive with smaller chicks, sometimes bullying them away from food. Keep an eye on every chick and make sure theyre all getting an equal share of food.
Where Do I Keep A Baby Bird
Precise temperature and humidity is essential for optimum growth of newly hatched birds. Initially, relative humidity greater than 50% is required. Hatchlings should be maintained at 95°-97°F . As the chick gets older and develops feathers, it has a greater tolerance for temperature fluctuations.
Generally, the temperature can be lowered by one degree every 2-3 days as feathering progresses. Chicks with new feathers should be fine at 75°-85°F depending on the development of the feathers. Fully feathered and weaned chicks can be maintained at room temperature. If you are raising a chick, always monitor your bird for signs of overheating or chilling. Wings extended or drooping, and panting indicate overheating. Shivering and cuddling of chicks together indicate that theyre cold.

Baby Chicks Need You To Be An Attentive Keeper
I know it will be hard for you to stay away from those baby chicks and you will be checking on them constantly, but its worth pointing out that this actually is important to do.
You dont need to be with them every single minute but they are babies and should be checked on at least a few times a day. Kids can get into trouble, right? Kids can do silly things, yes? Chicks are just like kids. So keep an eye on them.
But, having said that, dont stress! Something to keep in mind is that baby chicks havent changed. Baby chicks are the same as they were 100 years ago, its just that now we have the internet to banter back and forth about the right way to raise them and what newfangled products we need in order to raise them correctly. Simply put, baby chicks need some place safe and warm to live, they need food and water, and they need someone to check up on them to make sure theyre not getting into trouble.

Raising chickens and ducks are very similar in most ways. You can use the same brooder, bedding, and basic care for all poultry. However, they differ in one significant way, and thats how baby ducks eat. Most chicks can eat from shallow dishes and drink from small water bowls because they have tiny beaks that peck the ground. But your ducklings have a longer and broader bill that scoops food and water.
To accommodate your ducklings nutritional needs, you will need deep and wide waterers and feeders. And its also essential to keep clean water available at all times. Most ducks have a hard time digesting food, so they mix it with water to make it easier. But thats not all ducks use water for.
You will often see your ducklings splashing their faces in the water. And you might think that they are playing, but your ducks are doing it for a good reason. Ducks regularly clean their bills of dust and debris, and if they dont have access to this water, they can get infections.

Days Plus Baby Robins Eat
From this point, more often than not baby robins are able to eat food provided to them by the parents that are just placed in the nest. The baby robin is old enough to find and eat the food themselves within the nest.
In general, baby robins depend on the parents fully for their daily dose of food, until they are independent enough and can fledge the nest and fly away.
On average, the parent robins can make up to 100 visits a day to feed their young ones that just shows how often the baby robins eat to grow up.
This is also why robins are very picky in choosing a territory to create their nest. They need to ensure they live close to adequate food sources to make the hunt for food and feeding visits often and easy.
So lets move on to how you would feed a baby robin.
What To Feed A Baby Chick
Regardless of whether you purchase chicks froma hatchery or are hatching your own in a home incubator, you will need toprovide a specialized diet that makes up for everything you chick wouldnormally get from nature.
Chicks who are hatched at a hatchery are normally shipped at one-day-old.
They are safe to be shipped during this time as they can live for 48 hours on their egg sacs alone.
If you hatch your own eggs at home, know that the eggs will take about 21 days to hatch.
You should watch your incubator carefully during the hatching window . Make sure your chicks arent left in there too long, as they cant live forever without food and water.
Some chick hatchers add a supplement to the bottom of the shipping container in case your chicks get delayed in shipment.
Usually, your chicks wont touch these unless they become curious.
If you are hatching chicks in your own incubator, make sure you leave them there until they are dry and fluffy and dont worry about them starving they will be fine for two full days.
You should provide your birds with a chick starter feed that contains at least 18 percent protein.
This high level of protein is necessary to provide your chicks with the energy they need for the rapid amounts of early growth they will experience.
A good chick starter will also contain amino acids, probiotics, prebiotics, yeast, vitamins, and minerals.
This combination will support the healthy development of bones and organs.

How Much Water Does A Baby Quail Need
Only a few ounces of water per baby quail is needed, but you want to refresh it regularly to keep it clean. The one thing you need to make sure is that they dont fall asleep in the water because they can drown in it. Baby quail are ridiculously cute and I remember them falling asleep mid stride only to lay down right where they were, so I did a shallow dish and put some smooth river rocks in it so they couldnt lay in the water directly, but still access the water.
Vegetables & Leafy Greens
Oh my, do ducks love their leafy greens! Its always best to float them on water, and tear them into smaller pieces.
Ducks dont chew their food, and you dont want long strands of grass or other goodies getting caught in their digestive systems. This is important whether your feeding young ducklings or mature ducks.
Some veggies and leafy greens that ducks love are:
- Cut grass
- Kale
- Cucumber
- Peas
Consider creating a garden just for your ducks the greens are pretty inexpensive to grow, and will supply your flock with an extra amount of food, pretty much for free.
