Tummy time is when you put your baby on her stomach while shes awake. It can help make your babys neck, shoulder and arm muscles stronger. It also helps prevent flat spots on the back of your babys head that she may get from sleeping on her back. Always watch your baby during tummy time or make sure an adult who is awake is watching your baby.

What Is Bedside Sleeping

Bedside sleeping is when your baby sleeps in a bedside cot. This allows you to be close to them without sharing the same bed.

The idea is that the bedside cot attaches securely to your bed, at the same level as your mattress with the side next to you open. Then you can reach out to your baby without the bother of getting out of bed.

Theres limited research on bedside cots but possible benefits include:

  • Making life easier when your movements are limited after a caesarean .
  • Closeness might help with bonding.
  • You can easily settle your baby back to sleep.
  • Your baby will be nearby for night feeds.
  • It might encourage breastfeeding if you had an intervention-free birth.

Should You Sleep Train Your Baby Or Get Baby On A Sleep Schedule

You won’t be able to put your baby on a regular sleep schedule until he’s between 3 and 6 months old. In fact, trying to start a sleep schedule too soon might interfere with baby’s growth, not to mention your milk supply if youre breastfeeding.

Your baby will likely set of his own sleep schedule: He might be an early riser and like to eat as soon as he wakes up, or he may like to sleep in and eat later in the morning. Either one is perfectly fine babies vary as to how much sleep they need, and when they need it.

The important thing to keep in mind is the total number of hours your little one is sleeping. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies ages 4 to 12 months sleep 12 to 16 hours every 24 hours, including naps. The National Sleep Foundation says babies ages 4 to 11 months should sleep 12 to 15 hours over 24 hours, including naps.

If your baby is 5 or 6 months old, and you’ve already weaned him off night feedings, you might want to try sleep training, which means teaching your little one to sleep for longer stretches at night and to self-soothe when he wakes up.

If you’re reading this through bleary eyes and the fog of fatigue, try to be patient with yourself and your little night owl. It’s a good idea to sleep when your baby sleeps if you can and get help from loved ones to prevent extreme exhaustion.

Get Sunlight And Avoid Artificial Lighting At Night

Make sure you expose yourself and your baby to bright light during the day. And keep lights outor at least dimmedafter sunset.

What Are The Different Alert Phases Of A Newborn

Babies also have differences in how alert they are during the time they are awake. When a newborn awakens at the end of the sleep cycles, there is typically a quiet alert phase. This is a time when the baby is very still, but awake and taking in the environment. During the quiet alert time, babies may look or stare at objects, and respond to sounds and motion. This phase usually progresses to the active alert phase in which the baby is attentive to sounds and sights, and moves actively. After this phase is a crying phase. The baby’s body moves erratically, and he or she may cry loudly. Babies can easily be overstimulated during the crying phase. It is usually best to find a way of calming the baby and the environment. Holding a baby close or swaddling may help calm a crying baby.

Dont Assume The Mellow Sleepy Newborn Phase Will Last Forever

We hate to break it to you, but your dozy, peaceful infant who simply falls asleep, milk-drunk, after a feeding may not always be this way. The first few weeks are not always indicative of the kind of sleeper you happened to score in the newborn sleep lottery. Some babies randomly sleep through the night early on but it doesnt mean this will continue indefinitely. Have you weathered the four-month sleep regression yet? Newborn babies will sleep on and off throughout the day and night. It can be helpful to have a pattern, but you can always change the routine to suit your needs. For example, you could try waking your baby for a feed just before you go to bed in the hope that you’ll get a long sleep before they wake up again.

Myth : Swaddling Should Be Stopped After Two Months

Swaddling reduces crying and increases sleep. But new research shows that swaddled babies who roll to the stomach have double the risk of SIDS compared with an unswaddled baby rolling over. As a result, the pediatrics academy is now recommending that parents stop baby-wrapping at 2 months. On the face of it, the groups new advice seems to make sense, but it completely ignores the risks of not swaddling.

In an eight-year review of data collected by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, only 22 sudden unexplained infant deaths related to swaddling were reported almost 50% were in sleep sacks , and 90% were found on the stomach and/or with bulky bedding.

During those eight years, hundreds of thousands if not millions of babies were swaddled. Since sudden unexplained infant death strikes one in 1,200 babies, one would have expected hundreds or perhaps thousands of swaddle-related deaths over this period if wrapping caused these deaths. Of note, during the same eight years, 1,026 deaths related to sofa sleeping were reported to the safety commission.

    Newborn Sleep Cycles: Why Newborns Are Light Sleepers

    When adults first fall asleep, we pass through a couple of light sleep stages, and then plunge into a bout of deep sleep.

    Afterwards, we switch into REM, or rapid eye movement sleep, a sleep stage famous for its association with dreaming, and the loss of muscle tone. We dont move much during REM.

    When REM is over, we either awaken, or return to light sleep and begin the cycle again. For the average adult, a single sleep cycle lasts about 90-100 minutes. We may partially awaken many times during the night. But were more likely to wake up all the way during transitions between stages, during light sleep, and during REM.

    Newborn sleep is also characterized by sleep stages and cycles, but there are crucial differences.

    First, babies typically begin their sleep bouts in the newborn equivalent of REM .

    Second, newborns in REM dont usually experience muscle atonia.

    Unlike us, they may thrash around, stretch, twitch, and even vocalize. The results can fool parents into thinking their babies are waking up, when they are actually experiencing normal REM sleep.

    Third, newborn sleep cycles are shorter around 50-55 minutes for the average infant and REM makes up a much bigger proportion of sleep.

    Its not unusual for newborns to spend more than half their total sleep time in REM . Indeed, several studies suggest that, over the course of a 24 hour day, some newborns spent may spend as much as 75% of their sleep time in active sleep .

    Safe Sleeping Where Should Your Baby Sleep

    It’s up to you where your baby sleeps, but it is recommended that babies sleep in a cot in the same room as an adult for the first 6 to 12 months, since this has been shown to lower the risk of sudden infant death syndrome .

    Always place a baby to sleep on their back with the head and face uncovered every time they sleep, night or day. Keep the room smoke-free.

    How to Make Your Baby Sleep Well at Night (Easy Tips)

    1. Dont rush in the moment you think your baby has awakened.

    As noted above, babies experience frequent arousals, but that doesnt mean they are doomed to wake up all the way every few minutes. Babies often jerk, sigh, or vocalize during partial arousals. If you avoid stimulating them during these moments, they may go back to sleep on their own.

    2. Tank up the baby before you go to sleep.

    3. If you feed your baby formula, try to find one that includes DHA.

    DHA is a fatty acid found in fish oil and other dietary sources. Its important for brain development, and may play a role in shaping sleep patterns as well.

    In one study, children who consumed low levels of DHA had reduced amount of slow-wave sleep . In another study, pregnant women with higher blood levels of DHA gave birth to babies who spent more time in quiet sleep .

    DHA is found in breast milk, so its plausible that boosting a nursing mothers DHA intake could improve a newborns sleep patterns. If you use formula, it seems like a good idea to find a baby formula that contains DHA.
