The Feet To Foot Position
One of the most memorable mantras of baby sleep safety, the feet to foot position involves placing your baby with their feet at the end of the cot, pram or bassinet. If you are using a blanket, tuck the covers in securely underneath your babys arms so it cant slip over their heads as they sleep. Use lightweight blankets dont use things like duvet or quilts, wedges or bedding rolls.
Safe Infant Sleeping Bag
Infant sleeping bags can help reduce the risk of sudden death and also prevent arms and legs from getting trapped in the cot rails.
A safe infant sleeping bag is made in such a way that the baby cannot slip inside the bag and become completely covered. The sleeping bag should be the correct size for the baby, with a fitted neck, armholes and no hood.
When using a sleeping bag, ensure the baby is dressed according to the room temperature and do not use sleeping bags with quilts or doonas. If additional warmth is needed, a light blanket is usually all that is necessary, but take care to tuck the blanket in firmly so it cannot ride up and cover baby’s head during sleep. Another way to provide additional warmth is to dress your baby in layers of clothing inside the sleeping bag to keep baby warm.

Keep A Proper Balance Of Activity And Daytime Naps
Babies that remain active during the day will gradually run out of energy and sleep better at night. Thus, it is important to keep the little ones engaged during their waking hours.
Intersperse this daytime routine with two to three short naps of 2030 minutes ideally so that the baby does not become overtired. Also, it is important to maintain a considerable gap between the last nap of the day and your babys final bedtime to encourage quick and sound sleep during the night.

Try Sleep Training Methods
Deciding to sleep train your baby might feel overwhelming. There are many gentle sleep training methods that will help your baby sleep soundly without your help.
Fading sleep training is one method that encourages parents to soothe their babies when they cry. In this method, the parent enters the room with timed check-ins until the baby falls asleep. When the parent checks on the baby, they can pat or soothe their baby while the baby stays in their crib.
Some other sleep training methods include:
If you find that sleep training is not working with your little one, remember to be patient. Older babies might resist change to their routine more than others.
Dont Rely On Smart Baby Monitors
Cardiorespiratory monitors, which alert you to changes in your babys breathing at night, havent been proven to protect against SIDS. Nor are they regulated by the Food and Drug Administration because they’re not considered medical devices, so they’re often not safe to have around your baby at all.

How To Keep Your Baby Warm And Safe During Sleep: The Importance Of A Baby Sleeping Bag
A baby sleeping bag is a sleeved blanket that helps your baby stay warm and comfortable during sleep. It is important to note that you should never put a blanket over a baby sleeping bag as this can create a suffocation hazard. If you need to use a blanket, make sure it is placed under the baby sleeping bag.
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against using blankets for babies under the age of 12 months. As soon as you introduce a blanket to your babys sleeping area, he or she will be more likely to become suffocated. Swaddling your baby rather than giving him or her a blanket can be safer. To ensure that your baby gets a good nights sleep, adjust your thermostat to 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit7. Layering your childs clothing is the simplest way to accomplish this. If your baby requires additional warmth, try layering their clothing rather than blanketing them. If your baby is swaddled in warm clothing, he or she will feel more at ease on cold nights.
Our simple What to Wear guide can be found here. Do not use a Grobag next to a bed sheet or other bedding.
Wool baby sleeping bags are also thought to reduce the risk of SIDS due to their ability to prevent overheating. The blanket should never cover a babys head instead, it should be tucked securely under their arms or, if they sleep in a sleeping bag, used as a cover for their head.
How Much Should Baby Sleep
Infants tend to sleep a lot, typically 14 to 18 hours a day, says Edward Kulich, MD, a New York City-based concierge house call pediatrician and baby sleep consultant. It can take several weeksor monthsbefore babys sleep settles into a pattern. In the early days, Kulich notes, schedules are erratic, since babies have a small stomach and cant go more than one to four hours without eating. But by 3 months old, he says, baby will tend to get into more of a rhythm, usually taking three naps a day, and some babies will sleep through the night.
He defines sleeping through the night as baby getting 7 to 12 consecutive hours of shuteyewhich is a dream stretch for any new parent. But how do you and baby get to that point? Routine is key, Kulich says. Consistency above all. Many methods will work, but no method will work unless everyone in the household applies it consistently.

The Risks Of Bed Sharing
The safest place for your baby to sleep for the first 6 to 12 months is their own safe space in a room with you. Don’t share a bed with your baby, particularly if you or your partner:
- have recently drunk alcohol
The risks of bed sharing are also increased if your baby:
- was premature , or
- weighed less than 2.5kg when they were born

Sharing A Bed With Your Baby
Adult beds aren’t designed for babies. Before you bed-share, consider whether you think it’s a safe place for your baby to sleep. Check that:
- your baby cannot fall out of the bed
- your baby cannot get trapped between the mattress and the wall
- your adult bedding can be kept away from your baby
- other children and pets will not be in the bed at the same time as your baby
Mothers do sometimes bed-share when breastfeeding, however, without some planning and thought it can be very dangerous.
If you are breastfeeding while lying down, make sure your baby cannot roll onto their front. Try and keep your baby on their back, or move them onto their back once they have been fed.
If youre thinking about bed-sharing, talk to your midwife, health visitor or family nurse about how to reduce the risks for your baby.

Teach Your Newborn To Sleep
If you can get in the habit of putting your newborn to sleep while he is drowsy but still awake, then you will begin to teach him how to put himself to sleep. Like adults, babies go through several cycles of wakeful periods during the night. Adults can put themselves back to sleep with no issue. For babies, this is a learned skill. The sooner your baby can fall asleep on his own, the sooner your baby will sleep through the night.

Should I Give My Newborn A Dummy
Its amazing, really, how much emotion a small piece of plastic can stir up. But it can and does. Ranged in the against dummies, no matter what corner are, generally speaking, the older generation, mutteringly darkly about bad habits and wonky teeth. Facing them from the for dummies, actually corner are, equally generally speaking, an evangelical crowd of new parents whove finally found the way to get a moments peace.

Stick To The Same Going
Once you find what works, repeat the same series of steps every time you put your baby down. You might feed her a bottle and burp her, then sing a song, rock her or walk her around, and then put her down in her crib once shes fallen to sleep. Whatever you do, do the same thing in the same order every time. This conditions your babys body to start getting sleepy as soon as the routine starts to happen.

A gorilla baby in Munich’s Hellabrunn Zoo was not accepted by its group, its health was poor – the little monkey was put to sleep.
The offspring at the zoo is always something very special – regardless of whether it’s baby porcupines, baby anteaters or red ruffed lemur babies, because especially the little ones warm the hearts of visitors.
In the Tierpark Hellabrunn, the keepers found – completely surprisingly – a gorilla baby in the enclosure on New Year’s Eve.
Unfortunately, neither the mother nor the group accepted the baby.
Because of poor health, it was decided to put the monkey boy to sleep.
Put Your Baby To Sleep Drowsy But Not Asleep
In order for your baby to learn to self-soothe, they need practice. Try putting baby down before they fall asleep. This will allow them to develop their own sleep routine.
If you notice that your baby fell asleep while feeding, gently wake them up before laying them down. Putting your baby in bed drowsy will keep them from developing the habit of needing your assistance to fall asleep.

Room Sharing Not Bed Sharing
The American Academy of Pediatrics now says babies should sleep in their parentâs room for the first 6 months, or better yet, until their first birthday. New statistics say room-sharing can lower the risk of SIDS by as much as 50%. Itâs easier to keep an eye on your baby, comfort, and feed them. But they need their own safe space: A bassinet, crib, or co-sleeper .Babies should not sleep in the bed with their parents. That increases the risk that the childâs breathing could get cut off, and itâs even more dangerous if you smoke, drink, or take drugs

Crib Mattress Safety Tips
Follow these safety tips when it comes to choosing your crib mattress:
- Crib mattresses should fit snugly. Make sure the mattress fits tightly and snugly against the inside of the crib. If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib, it isn’t up to safety standards. The harder it is for you to make the bed, the safer it is for your baby.
- Use a standard-size mattress for a full-size crib that is firm and at least 27 1/4 inches by 51 1/4 inches and no more than 6 inches thick. Oval- or round-shaped cribs need mattresses that are specially designed to fit in them snugly.
- For portable cribs and playards, use only the mattress that came with it. When these products are evaluated for safety, its only with the mattresses theyre sold with. Mattress toppers or thicker pads pose a suffocation risk.

- place your baby on their back to sleep, in a cot in the same room as you, for the first 6 months
- keep your baby’s head uncovered their blanket should be tucked in no higher than their shoulders
- if wearing your baby in a sling or carrier, do not cover their head with the sling material or with a muslin
- place your baby in the “feet to foot” position, with their feet at the end of the cot or moses basket
- do not let your baby get too hot or cold
- do not share a bed with your baby
- never sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair
- do not smoke during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and do not let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby
Feeding Dummies And Sids
Breastfeeding your baby reduces the risk of SIDS.
It’s possible using a dummy at the start of a sleep also reduces the risk of SIDS. But the evidence is not strong and not all experts agree that dummies should be promoted.
If you do use a dummy, do not start until breastfeeding is well established. This is usually when your baby is around 1 month old.
Stop giving them the dummy when they’re between 6 and 12 months old.

First Newborn Surrendered To Florida Safe Haven Baby Box
TAMPA, Fla. Two years after being installed, a Safe Haven Baby Box in Florida was used for the first time.
Ocala Fire Rescue said a newborn baby was anonymously surrendered to the Safe Haven box at their headquarters recently.
134 climate-controlled boxes have been installed at firehouses and other locations across the country, creating a safe place for mothers who are in crisis or are otherwise unable to parent to anonymously surrender infants. A silent alarm will notify first responders after a baby is placed inside.
We are so proud of this selfless parent who has lovingly surrendered their infant via a Baby Box over the holiday! We are so happy this community was prepared for this situation, Safe Haven Baby Boxes Founder Monica Kelsey said in a statement to WESH. We know this baby will be so loved by an adoptive family and we are so thrilled to be a part of protecting infants from abandonment.
Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn said he is glad the city could provide this resource for mom and baby.
Im so happy to hear of this miracle baby. I knew when we did this in 2020, this day would come we all did we just didnt know when, Mayor Guinn told WESH. Were glad it was there as a resource for the mother of this child.
The Ocala Safe Haven Baby Box was installed in 2020, marking the 66th installation in the U.S.
