7 Sleep Tips for Newborns: Help Your Newborn Sleep

Once you get the okay from your doctor to stop night feedings, you should slowly start to reduce them. In many cases, feeding becomes a sleep association because you fed your baby every time they woke up. Just because thats no longer necessary, doesnt mean your baby wont want it anymore. Slowly wean them off the night feedings , feeding them less and not as frequently over a few days or a week to get them used to not feeding every time they wake.

Colic Remedies: How To Soothe A Baby With Colic

Unfortunately, the definition of colic includes precisely that your baby is crying for long periods of time and cannot be soothed. Im going to be honest here. Therefore, the ways you soothe a baby with colic will not likely be very successful. However, few parents can sit back and do nothing while their baby is crying.

As usual, I recommend you make a plan for how you will handle your newborn every day when the crying starts.

If you have help, I highly recommend you take turns, too. For example, if you know your baby will cry for 3 hours beginning around 6:30 p.m. every day, you can plan to let your spouse go for a walk or take a bath in another part of the house for the first 30-60 minutes while you take the first shift. During the second hour, you can switch places.

If you dont have help, you can plan to try soothing the baby for 30 minutes, use a swing for 30 minutes, put on headphones for 30 minutes while walking the baby around the kitchen, and so on. If you know what you will do every day, you can reduce some of the frustration that comes with expecting youll be able to stop the crying. Accept the baby will cry and simply follow your protocol to get through it.

But, what about the baby? How can you soothe the baby? Here are a few things you can try:

How To Get A Newborn To Sleep In A Bassinet Mastering The Transfer

If you find that putting her down always wakes her up or she always cries once your hands are away, sometimes its necessary to sit by and either rock the bassinet or reach your hand in where you can touch her .

Eventually, youll be able to withdraw without waking her up.

A great rule to count on is listening to her breath until it sounds like shes actually out, and then count to 60 five times.

Thats enough time for littles to get into her first sleep cycle, where shell be harder to wake.

A weighted swaddle, like this one, can really help babies who like to have a hand on them to fall asleep.

Let Your Baby Cry It Out

One crying-it-out type of sleep training is the well-known Ferber Method, also known as “Progressive Watching” or “Graduated Extinction.” The goal is to teach your baby how to sleep on their own and put themselves back to sleep if they wake up during the night. Richard Ferber, MD, director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children’s Hospital Boston, developed this method. He advises parents not to start this training until their baby is at least 5 or 6 months old. Hereâs an overview of how itâs done:

  • Put your baby in their crib — drowsy, but awake. Once you’ve finished their bedtime routine, leave the room.
  • If your baby cries, wait a few minutes before you check on them. The amount of time you wait depends on you and your baby. You might start waiting somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes.
  • When you re-enter your babyâs room, try to console them. But do not pick them up and do not stay for more than 2 or 3 minutes, even if they are still crying when you leave. Seeing your face will be enough to assure your baby that you are close by so they can eventually fall asleep on their own.
  • If they continue crying, gradually increase the amount of time you wait before going in to check on them again. For instance, if you wait 3 minutes the first time, wait 5 minutes the second time, and 10 minutes each time after that.
  • The next night, wait 5 minutes the first time, 10 minutes the second time, and 12 minutes each time after that.

How To Help Newborn Sleep Better

Your newborn baby cycles through his two sleep stages for 16 to 20 hours per day in small chunks. Those chunks arent consecutive or nearly as long as adults need to feel rejuvenated and rested. So, parents need to find ways to get more sleep to avoid sleep deprivation.

Using sleep aids, like swaddling and white noise, can help to lengthen the time between wake ups. Every minute counts! Start creating a sleeping routine to help your babys brain learn to signal its bedtime and start winding down.

In the weeks following your babys birth, make sure you take it easy and avoid too many visitors. Spend as much time as possible resting and napping, when possible. Head to bed earlier and take advantage of every second possible to maximize your sleeping time.

Conditions To Aid Your Babys Sleep

The environment your baby sleeps in will affect their ability to get to sleep and stay asleep through the night. When decorating the space, Howey recommends sticking to neutral colors and avoiding anything too stimulating. Keep the lighting soft so you have a calm space in which to get your baby ready for bed.

Temperature is an important factor when creating the ideal space for your baby to sleep in. Howey says to keep the room temperature between 60F and 68F throughout the year. Humidity levels should be kept at around 40% and maintained with one of the best humidifiers. However, humidifiers should not be used while the baby is in the room and should be avoided for babies with weakened immune systems . You can monitor the temperature and humidity levels in your babys room with a combined thermometer and hygrometer. The devices can be bought very cheaply and allow you to ensure the rooms conditions are optimal for your babys sleep.

The room will need to be as dark as possible for your baby to sleep well, so consider blackout curtains, blinds, or shutters to keep light out. This is especially true during the summer months, when it may still be light outside whilst your baby is going to bed. Howey also suggests placing a white noise machine in your babys room to help them relax and get to sleep. White noise machines play a variety of sounds, from womb noises to ocean waves.

Week : Look For Sleep Cues

Your cruising into having a 1-month-old! By now you might be feeling a bit more adjusted, recovered, and bonded to your infant.

Newborn sleep might be sporadic but now that you know your baby better, start looking for sleep cues. Take notice of the things your baby does to show that they are tired. Do they cry a certain way? Get fussy and then ratchet up the noise? Get extra snuggly or rub their eyes?

This newborn sleep tip will help you recognize when youre baby is telling you they want to sleep and will help you put them down with success!

Many times an over-tired infant is hard to get to sleep. However, when you see they are ready to sleep and you take action you will get better results!

How To Get Your Baby To Sleep Tip : Don’t Try To Do It All

Moms always want to do it all – it’s part of our nature. But when you’ve just had a baby, “doing it all” is more exhausting than it normally is…and somewhat impossible. This tip is mainly to help you get the rest you need but is also a reminder that your attitude and exhaustion can rub off on your baby.

If you’re cranky and tired and you’re trying to soothe your baby to sleep, they’re going to pick up on that. That’s why it’s sometimes a good idea to pass baby off to someone a little calmer and more relaxed when trying to get your baby to sleep. If you are calm, your baby will clam easier as well.

Since stretching yourself too thin doesn’t do any good for you or your baby, don’t feel like everything is up to you! Ask a friend or family member to babysit for a few hours so you can go take a nap or get out of the house.

If you don’t feel comfortable handing off any newborn duties quite yet, let go of some of the other things on your plate and delegate them out. The laundry, vacuuming, cooking, walking the dog…these are all things you can either ask a friend or family member for help with, or hire someone to do for you. While you might not normally spend money on these types of services, with a new baby at home it will save you time and your sanity.

Friends and family are always looking for ways to help new moms. So tell them what you REALLY need when they offer.

If your baby is having problems sleeping or you need more advice about getting into a routine, speak to your health visitor.

Set Up A Proper Sleeping Environment

The proper sleep environment will matter more and more as baby gets past the 6-week mark. Set up a room for your baby to sleep for naps and bedtime. The sooner your baby starts to associate darkness and loud white noise with sleep, the easier his or her life will be.

People always worry their baby will become addicted to or dependent on darkness and white noise, and then wont be able to sleep without it. Newsflash: adults have sleep preferences too! I dont like to sleep on planes, trains, or automobiles. I prefer sleeping in my bed, with my pillow, etc. Many adults swear they sleep just fine through any errant noise, but studies show that constant pink noise helps the brain go into more stable levels of sleep. You can also just not use white noise or darkness, and then see how that goes.

Most babies sleep better with loud white noise, and as-dark-as-possible darkness. This is a post about how to get your kiddo to sleep better, after all

Place The Crib Near Your Bed

Placing the babys crib or bassinet next to your bed makes it easier to tend to the baby and then go back to sleep, making for a more restful night. While co-sleeping in the same bed with your little one may seem tempting, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against it because of the risk of suffocating the baby.

Learn To Use The Lights In Their Bedroom

Lights are like a switch that wakes us up while darkness is food for sleep. Therefore, you need to keep your baby in the light during the day and darkness at night so that they get used to it.

    • During the day: Let the sunlight into your home. Tie back the curtains and open some windows.
    • During the night: Lower the intensity of the lights before bedtime.
    • You can still use small nightlights as long as theyre not too bright.

    Understand Your Baby’s Sleep Needs

During the first 2 months, your newborn’s need to eat overrules their need to sleep. They may feed almost every 2 hours if you’re breastfeeding, and possibly a little less often if you bottle-feed.

Your baby may sleep from 10 to 18 hours a day, sometimes for 3 to 4 hours at a time. But babies donât know the difference between day and night. So they sleep with no regard for what time it is. That means your babyâs wide-awake time may be from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

By 3 to 6 months, many babies are able to sleep for a stretch of 6 hours. But just as you think your baby is getting into a nice routine — usually between 6 and 9 months — normal developmental stages can throw things off. For instance, when your baby begins to associate bedtime with being left alone, they may start crying just to keep you around.

A crib presents some difference in challenges since you cant typically rock it and the walls tend to have gaps through which your little one can see you and get excited for no stupid reason at all.

    Beware Of Sleep Dependency

Many infants will become sleep dependent on certain things to fall asleep and stay asleep. Some common sleep dependencies include: having to be held, rocked, nursed, needing a bottle, or a pacifier.

These things work well when infants are young, like 3 months or younger. But when your child cant fall asleep on their own and they need you to rock them back to sleep, even when they are 6 or 8 months old, its going to be very tiring.

Having a baby that can fall asleep on their own is going to save you a lot of time, energy and sleep.

Some sleep methods encourage the use of noise machines and blacked out rooms with light blocking curtains. These can be helpful in getting your baby to sleep through the night, but babies often become sleep dependent on those things as well.

Often, they wont be able to sleep without their noise machine or if theyre outside of their dark room. This can make day trips and vacations very difficult or impossible. With this technique the baby is not sleep dependent on you getting them to sleep, but they are dependent on a very specific type of environment.
