Why Does My Newborn Have So Much Gas

Try To Reduce Babys Crying

Why does my baby cry and fuss during breastfeeding?

When your baby cries, they may gulp in air. Unfortunately, if the crying leads to gas in their system, theyre probably going to want to cry more.

This can be a vicious cycle, so we encourage you to do work on soothing the tears. Some soothing options include using a pacifier, swaddling, rocking, and swinging.

Does Gassiness In Babies Go Away On Its Own

So, hereâs the good news. Your baby should stop booping so much by the time theyâre ready to start sitting on their own. âExcessive gassiness generally resolves at about 4-6 months of age, once a baby’s gut starts to mature,â says Dr. Casares. Adds Dr. Perelman: âMany kids outgrow the excessive gas phase as their diets stabilize into toddlerhood, but in the meantime dietary adjustments, position during feeds, and even a little simethicone can be helpful, but most importantly the guidance of a good pediatrician.â

Gas And Breastfed Babies

Moms who are breastfeeding may be told to eliminate dairy from their own diets because a breastfed baby with diagnosed cows milk protein allergy can be exposed to the protein through moms breastmilk. This is one of the only cases where a reduction or elimination of a food from moms diet may be beneficial, says Nishta Saxena, a registered dietitian and paediatric and family nutrition specialist. But typically gassy foods like broccoli, beans and lentils consumed by mom arent likely to cause gas in a breastfed baby. We just dont have a lot of evidencethat shows an improvement in gassiness with the removal of foods from the moms diet, says Saxena.

For the most part, babies just need time for their tummies and digestive systems to mature, and then gas issues will subside. However, if the intensity of crying has increased, if youre unable to settle your baby for a sustained amount of time, or if his or her abdomen appears overly distended or feels hard to the touch, call your doctor. Reflux or an allergenic response can also be mistaken for gas, so its important to check with your doctor.

Can Breastfeeding Make Baby Gassy

Some research has found that the foods in a mom’s diet might make breastfed babies gassy, but the evidence is far from conclusive. Before you completely revamp what you’re eating, see if there are other subtle ways you can help your baby swallow less air at mealtimes, including working on your latch, burping baby twice at each feeding and trying different nipples or bottles if you pump.

If your breastfed baby is still gassy, and you notice that every time you eat a certain food he seems gassier or fussier than usual, theres no harm in cutting that food from your diet to see if it helps. Work with your doctor to nail down foods that might make breastfed babies gassy, including:

  • Cruciferous veggies like cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower
  • Dairy and eggs

Remedies For A Gassy Baby

Here are several home remedies you can try to help relieve your babys excess gas!

Burp Them Twice

Since swallowing air while feeding is the most probable explanation for newborn gas, burping them twice is a great and simple thing to try. Even giving your baby some gentle back pats during feeding can go a long way. A lot of times, if your baby turns away from the breast or bottle in the middle of feeding, its not because theyre fullits because the gas is making them uncomfortable!

Keep Them Upright

Try to feed your baby in a very upright position. This will help minimize the amount of air theyre swallowing. If youre bottle feeding, you can try an anti-gas nipple to better control the flow of milk. Also be sure to avoid shaking the bottle too much, which can create extra bubbles.

Learn Their Hunger Cues

Supplements To Help Baby Gas Pain

  • Simethicone. Baby gas drops are bubble breakers. These large, silicone molecules travel through a babys GI tract, breaking up gas bubbles along the wayIngold CJ, Akhondi H. Simethicone . In: StatPearls . Treasure Island : StatPearls Publishing 2021 Jan-. Accessed 6/16/21. . Simethicone is not absorbed by the body, so whatever your baby takes in will be pooped out. However, your baby might experience looser stools when gas drops are used excessively. In my experience, simethicone seems to work better as a preventive than a cure. Meaning, once a baby has gas pains, its too late for simethicone to help. Instead, use simethicone to prevent bubble buildup. I encourage my patients families to use gas drops frequently, offering a dose of the supplement before each feed.
  • Gripe water. Commonly used for upset baby tummies, this herbal supplement typically includes tinctures of chamomile or fennelherbs that have been shown to decrease crying associated with tummy painAnheyer D, Frawley J, Koch AK, Lauche R, Langhorst J, Dobos G, Cramer, H. Herbal Medicines for Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review. Pediatrics. 2017 139. . Although not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration , gripe water is generally safe to try. I would choose alcohol- and sugar-free formulations made in the U.S. Follow the dosing recommendations on the label.

    Why Does Gas Smell

While some gas comes from swallowed air, most intestinal gas is a byproduct of digestion, and is formed when gut bacteria break down sugars and other carbohydrates in the colon.

The average person passes gas up to 21 times each day 2. Some of this gas is smelly, while most gas is barely noticeable. In a healthy child, the odor from gas is connected to the child’s unique composition of gut bacteria, and also related to the specific foods consumed.

For instance, sulfur compounds found in a variety of foods including meat, nuts, dried fruits and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage give gas that rotten egg smell 2. Also, gas odor is influenced by the length of time the stool was in the gut. This is why a child who is constipated can have more smelly gas compared to a child who has daily, soft bowel movements.

    2. Allergies

A lot of things can cause a cat to have gas if she’s allergic. Unusual chemicals, cigarette smoke, plants, molds and various food items can cause gas in cats who are allergic.

It could be an additive in your cat’s food that gives her problems. You may have to do some detective work to see if there’s anything your cat’s been exposed to that could cause an allergic reaction.

    3. Swallowed Air
