Do I Need To Use A Flea Treatment On My Kitten

Traditional flea treatments are considered safe and effective for adults, but they are not recommended for kittens under 6 months of age.

The main reason for this is that the active ingredients in these productssuch as permethrin and pyrethrin are toxic to young animals. These chemicals damage the nervous system, causing paralysis and death in some cases.

There are alternative options for keeping fleas off your kitten, including:

  • Vacuum regularly. Fleas tend to gravitate toward areas where there is already blood . By vacuuming regularly and keeping these areas clean, you can significantly reduce the number of fleas that will bite your kitten.
  • Use an essential oil-based insecticide. There are many brands of essential oil sprays available that can kill adult fleas on contact while leaving a non-toxic residue on surfaces so that they cannot feed off your cat or dog. These oils can be applied directly on your pet or mixed in with a spray bottle and used as a room bug spray.
  • Use an insect growth regulator . These IGRs work by preventing immature fleas from developing into adults. They are non-toxic to pets but do not kill existing fleas.

What Are The Signs That The Kittens Are Not Doing Well And What Do I Do

Kittens should eat or sleep 90% of the time during the first two weeks of life. If they are crying during or after eating, it may indicate that they are ill, are not getting adequate milk, or the milk has become infected . If excessive crying occurs, your veterinarian should examine the queen and her entire litter as soon as possible.

“Goats milk is not recommended as it is far too low in protein and fat.”

When the mother’s milk supply is inadequate, supplemental feeding one to six times per day is recommended this should also be done routinely with any litter greater than five kittens. There are several excellent commercial milk replacers available. They require no preparation other than warming. These milk replacers should be warmed to 95° to 100°F before feeding. Test the temperature on your forearm: it should be about the same temperature as your skin. The commercial products have feeding directions based on their nutritional constituents. If the kittens are still nursing from their mother, feed one-third to one-half the recommended amount. Supplemental feeding is needed until the kittens are old enough to eat kitten food, usually around two to four weeks of age. Goats milk is not recommended as it is far too low in protein and fat.

In an emergency, you can substitute pasteurized goat’s milk from the grocery store for milk replacer. However, it is not nutritionally adequate for kittens and kitten milk replacer should be provided as soon as possible.

Intestinal parasites or worms are very common in kittens. Symptoms of intestinal parasites include generally poor condition, chronic soft or bloody stools, poor appetite, a pot-bellied appearance, loss of luster to the coat, and weight loss. Some parasites are transmitted from the mother to her offspring either in utero or through her milk, while others are carried by fleas or other insects. The eggs and larval forms of some parasites are transmitted through the stool of an infected cat.

How To Prevent Fleas

Your catâs warm, furry coat and nourishing blood supply are a fleaâs dream home. Protect your pet with a flea barrier to prevent these tiny pests from settling in. There are a few different types:

Products you put on your cat. Spot-on treatments are safer, more convenient, and more effective than traditional dusts, shampoos, and sprays. You can buy them from your vet or online. Ask your vet where on your cat to put the product, how much to apply, and how often to use it. If youâre not getting the treatment from your vet, read the product label first to make sure itâs safe for cats. Some common active ingredients and brands include:

A flea collar with flumethrin and imidacloprid can also work well.

Medicines your cat eats. The pill nitenpyram kills adult fleas on your cat within 30 minutes. It doesnât have any lasting effects, though. Spinosad is a fast-acting chewable that starts killing fleas before they lay eggs. It provides a full month of flea protection to help prevent future hatchings.

Why Do Nursing Cats Get Fleas

Nursing cats, especially those coming in and out of the home, are prone to getting flea infestations. Likewise, kittens that roam around outdoors will pick up fleas. Fleas are easy to go from fur to fur. But that doesnt mean indoor cats cannot get it.

Indoor cats might get infested by other household pets and also through their owners carelessness, i.e., a flea making its way through bags and even clothing.

Once the entrance of the flea takes place, they immediately start taking blood for food, reproducing, and may lay up to 50 eggs in a day. For an infestation site to occur, it will take a very minimum amount of time.

While laying eggs, fleas can also end up on the carpet, furniture, and even bed.

Bathing a kitten that is younger than 8 weeks old is generally not recommended, as they have difficulty controlling their body temperatures at such a young age.

If you have a kitten under 8 weeks old that has fleas, its a better idea to use a flea comb to remove the fleas.

Mechanical Flea Removal:

Once the kittens are about 2 weeks old and generally healthy, a mild soap will help to get rid of the fleas in an infestation.

Since its not recommended to fully bathe a kitten so young, you can spot bathe and use the flea comb before/after to catch any fleas you may have missed.

Will Fleas Come Off In Water

To get rid of fleas, rinse your dogs body with cool water and keep it clean. You wont be able to get rid of fleas without the help of water. You must use a shampoo with flea- repelling ingredients.

Water is not so firm that cat fleas can drown quickly, so their surface tension does not break. If the fleas are submerged, it takes at least 24 hours for them to die. To speed things up, add a few drops of dish soap to the water. If water is dropped on the flea, it can survive for up to seven days. Insecticidal soaps, according to some theories, break down cell membranes and remove wax, acting as an insecticide. As growth regulators, soap can also influence insects cellular metabolism. A flea can die for up to four days if it is fed 50% glycerine and 50% water.

Fleas are small, hard-bodied creatures with a long, sharp tail that can easily jump. They thrive in warm, moist environments and can even survive in almost any type of environment. Warm-blooded animals, including humans, are fed by these animals blood. Fleas are a problem in both urban and rural settings. Their presence can be harmful to pets and cause significant health issues for humans. Fleas can be eradicated from your home when you bathe your pet on a regular basis with soap. Make certain that the soap you use is not harmful to your pet. Some people enjoy using essential oils in their bathing suits to help keep fleas at bay.

Nutrition Tips For Kittens

As we briefly discussed above, proper kitten nutrition includes modifying the diet to ensure you are feeding kittens what they need during each stage of growth.

  • The mother cat should be feeding kittens during the first 4 weeks of life, or you should use a special commercial milk-replacer formula every 2-4 hours if the kitten has been separated from its mother.
  • From 3-5 weeks of age, feeding kittens involves offering the milk-replacer formula in a shallow dish to encourage weaning from a bottle. You can also add a moist, easily chewable diet consisting of a mixture of warm milk-replacer and high quality canned or dried kitten food 4-6 times a day.
  • After 6 months of age, kittens should be fed 2-3 times per day.

Feeding kittens the right food in the right amounts, and at the right times throughout the day is essential for happy, healthy and growing cats. Our veterinary staff would be happy to discuss the proper feeding schedule for your kitten at your next veterinary appointment.

Flea Control For Young Kittens Under 8 Weeks (How To – Easy Solution)

If a flea has snuck into your home and fed on one of your pets, thats all they need to begin laying eggs rapidly.

The fleas you find on your pets are just five per cent of a home infestation. Flea eggs, larvae and pupae make up the other 95 per cent and are adept at hiding in carpets, furniture and cracks in floorboards and walls.

The environmental flea life stages can lay dormant in the home waiting to hatch until the conditions are right when they will re-infest your home and your kitten. When you have a flea problem, youll need to clean your home thoroughly and continue the process until youre sure youve managed to disrupt the flea life cycle to stop them from developing.

  • Vacuum every day – Youll need to vacuum the carpets and floors every day to help remove eggs and larvae and bring those buried deep to the surface.
  • Use a household flea spray – Once youve vacuumed, spray your floors with a veterinary recommended household flea treatment, to kill off any eggs and larvae that have been brought to the surface. Sprays can also help you to treat nooks and crannies, and other hard-to-reach areas, such as under furniture.
