1)Undress your baby except for a vest and nappy and wrap him or her in a towel.2)Hold your baby facing you in your lap or place him or her on a changing mat. 3)Start with the eyelids: Wipe the eyelids with cotton wool thatâs been dipped into a bowl of lukewarm water. Use a fresh piece of cotton wool for each eye, and wipe from the nose outwards â donât use soap for the eye area. Also avoid using soap on any areas of dry skin or eczema.4)Do the same with the other parts of the face, neck, hands and around the ears, using a new piece of cotton wool for each area. You can use a mild soap as well as the water to gently cleanse the parts of the face affected by baby acne.5)Remove the nappy and wash the nappy area with some fresh cotton wool and lukewarm water.6)Dry your baby carefully and put on a clean nappy.

Milia are similar to baby acne, but completely unrelated. These bumps are typically present at birth, while baby acne typically develops several weeks later. These white bumps occur when small flakes of skin become trapped in pockets just beneath the surface of the skin. Nearly half of all babies have milia on the upper cheeks, chin or nose. These little bumps are neither painful nor contagious and will resolve on their own in just a couple of weeks. No special washing, scrubbing or treatment is necessary.

Similarly, the heat created by rubbing your little one dry can contribute to the discomfort caused by baby acne. Always gently pat your babys skin dry.

What You Need To Know About Milia And Baby Acne
In our third installment covering infant skin issues, well be discussing milia and baby acne. Unlike some of the skin conditions weve covered, milia and baby acne are not rashes.
Milia are tiny white bumps that appear on a babys nose, chin, cheeks, or eyelids. These bumps tend to appear in groups or clusters of small white or yellowish bumps. A single milium can range from less than 1 millimeter up to 3 millimeters in size. Although they are very common in newborn babies, they can appear at any age.
There are two basic types of milia:
- Primary: the most common form of milia, especially on babies, appears on healthy skin. They frequently occur on the eyelids, forehead, cheeks, or genitals.
- Secondary: also known as traumatic milia, this type appears on skin that has acne, infection, or is in otherwise damaged condition. Secondary milia often appear on skin that has been damaged by burns, rashes, blisters, reaction to a topical cream/ointment, or even excessive exposure to sunlight. The milia develop as the skin heals. In this instance, it is more common to occur on older children or adults than on newborns.
What Can I Use To Treat Baby Acne
What can i use to treat baby acne? If your babys acne doesnt clear up after several months of home treatment, the doctor may recommend using a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide lotion. In rare cases, they may also prescribe an antibiotic, such as erythromycin or isotretinoin, so that your baby doesnt have permanent scars.

Baby acne is usually mild, and its limited to the face 99 percent of the time, says Teri Kahn, MD, clinical associate professor of dermatology and pediatrics at University of Maryland School of Medicine and Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore. Typically, baby acne appears in the form of little whiteheads and blackheads on the forehead, cheeks, and chin, she says. Other skin conditions, like eczema, show up on other parts of the body.
What Does Baby Acne Look Like
The characteristic signs of newborn acne are small red or white bumps that can appear all over the body but are usually concentrated on babys face and torso. You might also spy tiny white bumps on your newborns forehead, cheeks or near the mouth, called milia. These actually arent baby acne, per seinstead, the bumps are dead skin cells trapped in small pockets on the skins surface and tend to disappear within the first few weeks of life.
Infant acne can manifest as a crop or cluster of raised red bumps, sometimes filled with pus, and can appear anywhere on the body. Sometimes they disappear on their own sometimes they require treatment. Caring For The Umbilical Cord

How To Differentiate Baby Acne From Eczema
Infantile acne is different from eczema, which is why its important to take your baby to a doctor if they develop redness after 6 weeks of age. That way a pediatrician can rule out any other skin or medical conditions.
One key difference between eczema and infantile acne is that eczema will not have any pustules. Instead, eczema will look like rough areas of dry, scaly, or inflamed patches of skin.
If your baby does have eczema, the treatment will be different, so it is important to determine the cause of your babys acne before getting treatment. Eczema treatment requires thorough daily moisturizing and sometimes medicated creams which are different from topical medications used for acne, Gagin says.

Neonatal acne affects babies in the first 3 months of life. About 20% of healthy newborn babies may develop superficial pustules mostly on the face but also on the neck and upper trunk. There are no comedones present. Neonatal acne usually resolves without treatment.
Infantile acne is the development of comedones with papules and pustules and occasionally nodules and cysts that may lead to scarring. It may occur in children from a few months of age and may last till 2 years of age. It is more common in boys.

Infantile acne is thought to be a result of testosterone temporarily causing an over-activity of the skins oil glands. In susceptible children this may stimulate the development of acne.
