During the first few weeks of newborn life, babies sleep for about 16-17 hours per day, but it would be in 2-4 hours sleep at a time may it be day or night. You need to make your baby not only warm but cozy so they can sleep peacefully and sound. Babies like comfort and a method of comfort is to feel cozy.

Also you might find yourself nursing 8-12 times each day. But, this routine will remain such for the first month only. Keep them well fed and keep them rested whenever they want, babies will dictate their own schedule and a major reason why they cry is because you are trying to dedicate it. Do One Thing At A Time

To stop the crying pronto, parents will often pile one strategy upon another, in quick succession.

Parents often hold, bounce, shush, sing, pat, change positions all at once! They also will try to change the diaper, feed, and finally pass off to the other parent for a turn. Oftentimes all these happen within a couple of minutes. The only thing this does is overstimulate the baby, says Ideran.

Instead, carry out one action at a time such as just rocking, just patting, or just singing and stick with it for about 5 minutes to see if your baby settles. If not, try another relief method.

Why Does My Baby Suddenly Cry Hysterically

Figure Out Why Your Newborn Is Crying

If a newborn is crying, it is always important to try to find the reason why, says , PhD, APN Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Usually, they want one of their basic needs met:

  • They are hungry and need to be fed.
  • They need a diaper change.
  • They are tired and need sleep.
  • They are lonely and want to be held.
  • They have gas and burping may help.

Other reasons could be that they have acid reflux or food allergies or sensitivities. And as you get to know your baby better, youll start to notice that theyll have different cries for different needs. For example, when theyre hungry their cry might sound more low-pitched compared to if theyre tired.

However, if you cannot find out the reason and it continues, they may need to be seen by a healthcare provider to make sure they are not ill or it is not anything serious.

How To Calm Your Crying Baby At Night

Why Do Babies Cry!

If your baby wakes up crying at night despite all his needs being met, it is likely that he has made it a habit. Here are some ways in which you can help your child calm down and sleep through the night:

  • Put your baby in the crib or on the bed when hes drowsy but still awake. Be certain to place your child in the crib at this point even if his bedtime ritual has not been completed. The babys last waking memory has to be of the bed or crib, and not of you. This will encourage him to go back to sleep on his own when he wakes up in the middle of the night.
  • If your baby refuses to stop crying at bedtime, keep visiting him at intervals of five to fifteen minutes. You can keep increasing the duration between visits. However, do not let the baby get too upset if he seems extremely fussy or afraid, hold him till he calms down. You can sit in the room for a few moments till he calms down, but try to leave before he falls asleep.
  • Dont take your child out of the crib or bed once you have tucked him in for the night. Rocking your baby until he falls asleep or bringing him into your bed for a while will defeat the purpose of this exercise.
  • Introduce your baby to a security object such as a soft toy or a blanket if your baby is six months or older. This will be of comfort to your baby when he wakes up at night and he will soon be happy cuddling this object instead of you at night.

What Is The Cry It Out/crying Down/ferber Method

Devised by a physician called Dr Richard Ferber, this method recommends letting your baby cry for a short while before you offer him comfort. Dr Ferber has also penned a book on this topic and it can be ideally applied to babies six months and older. The method suggested is as follows:

  • Gently place your baby in his crib or cot when he is extremely drowsy but not fast asleep.
  • Give your baby a goodnight kiss and step out of the room.
  • If your baby cries soon after, wait for a few moments before going inside.
  • Comfort your baby in a low voice and let the light be on low or switched off. Do not pick him up or feed him.
  • Leave the room even if your baby is still crying.
  • You have to repeat these steps until your baby goes off to sleep. It is likely that this will take quite a few attempts before you fully succeed.
  • Be sure to extend the time between each visit, giving your child greater time to calm down and attempt to sleep.
  • If the baby wakes up again at night, repeat the same process.

According to Dr Ferber, babies should be able to put themselves to sleep in about a weeks time. It is believed that this technique works because a lot of older babies smartly make the most of the situation when they realize that crying will result in them being held or fed. So, this technique conveys the message that their crying game no longer has any takers. On realizing this, they are likely to stop crying without reason.

Understanding And Responding To Your Newborn Babys Behaviour

Your newborn baby is working out what the world is like. The way you respond to your babys behaviour, especially crying, tells your baby a lot about the world.

For example, your baby might find out that when they cry, someone comes to give them what they need. This might be a nappy change, a feed or a cuddle. If that happens, baby will learn that the world is a pretty OK place.

When you respond quickly to comfort your crying newborn, your baby might cry less often overall. Its absolutely fine to pick up your newborn baby when they cry. It helps your baby feel safe and know that youre nearby.

You cant spoil a newborn. If your newborn is crying, its because they need you to comfort them. If you respond calmly and consistently, it helps your baby learn that the world is a safe and predictable place.

Why Do Babies Cry So Much?

If your baby receives a diagnosis of colic, then your pediatrician is likely to reassure you that youre doing a great job and things will improve with time. It doesnt mean youre a bad parent, and it doesnt mean that your kid doesnt like you, counseled Dr. DeBlasio. He tells parents that its natural to feel frustrated and reminds them that colicky kids wont be this difficult forever.

There are no generally accepted treatments for colic, so Dr. DeBlasio recommends simple changes to help with the gas, such as frequent burping and switching to bottles that reduce air swallowing, such as ones with angled tips or bottles with collapsible plastic bags. He tells parents, however, not to spend a lot of time and money trying different formulas or other supposed treatments.

There are many alternative and herbal remedies marketed for colic, like gripe water, but parents should be wary. Gripe water no longer contains alcohol, like it did in the 1800s, but there is also no evidence it works. There have been some small studies that have looked at anything from acupuncture and chiropracty to a huge variety of herbal supplements, said Dr. Kristen Slack, M.D., a pediatrician at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. Really, theres no consistent evidence to suggest that any of that is helpful. Unregulated supplements and spinal manipulation may also carry risks to the baby.

  • Take your baby for a walk in the pram or a sling. Movement can sometimes be soothing.
  • Try playing white noise like a fan or the radio tuned to the static between stations. This can help to settle your baby.
