What Other Experts Think
The finding of increased risk in younger grandparents is novel, said Thomas Frazier, PhD, a professor of psychology at John Carroll University in Ohio and the former chief science and program officer for Autism Speaks.
It could mean that young grandparents convey some risk to their children that magnify, or at least complement, increased risk in the parent, Frazier told Healthline.
For example, if young grandparents also have less money, and this results in poorer nutrition, that could impact the biology of the parent. These biological impacts might then be magnified in older parents, he added.
Frazier says the study suggests there may be some environmental factors that affect the child. But he says the results need to be repeated and show whether the grandparent effect remains after controlling for the advanced parental age.
For research, it suggests we should try to understand the factors, genetic and possibly epigenetic, that get transmitted from parent to child, and how this seems to result in greater problems for the child in older parents, he explained. Are there ways we can reduce these impacts? Supplementation? Exercise? Other parent health factors?
Bottom line? We need to study this more, Frazier said.

What Should I Do If My Baby Or Toddler Is Showing Early Signs Of Autism
Dont delay if you notice any of the early signs of autism in your baby, toddler or preschooler. If your child is really struggling to fit in and his differences are interfering with his life, or if you are consumed with a feeling that something just isn’t right, check in with your childs pediatrician.
If the doctor suspects a problem, your child will be scheduled for a thorough checkup to rule out other conditions, such as lead poisoning, hearing loss or certain learning disorders that may explain the symptoms.
You may end up seeing a child psychologist, a pediatric neurologist, a speech therapist, a developmental pediatrician or another professional who can evaluate your childs thinking skills, language level and motor skills.

Baby boys who will later be diagnosed with autism show a loss of interest in other peoples eyes between 2 and 6 months of age, according to a study published today in Nature1. This is the earliest behavioral marker of autism found to date.
The researchers found that the steeper the decline in eye fixation over the first two years of life, the greater the level of social and communication impairment at 2 years old.
Now we know that it is possible to develop a quantitative assay in early infancy that is predictive of both autism and level of social disability, says lead investigator Ami Klin, director of the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
The study is the latest in a surge of research on the younger siblings of children with autism, dubbed baby sibs, who have a one in five chance of developing the disorder.
Researchers have found that some baby sibs have distinctive brain-wave patterns and a loss of interest in faces beginning as early as 6 months of age. The new study uncovers changes in brain development even earlier.

When considering intervention for a child today, we should be asking: Is this going to help the child, and help the child feel good about herself, or is it for the parents? The answers should be reviewed anytime things change, John Elder Robison, author of the My Life With Aspergers blog for Psychology Today, wrote in a post.
Robison writes that while he supports interventions for children with ASD with visible impairments, he doesnt for those who are merely eccentric in their behavior.
Knowing an infant is developing autistically is probably not enough to choose an intervention or even to know if one is needed, he said. How autistic? In what ways? The last thing we need is to hammer kids with possibly unneeded interventions that may harm as many as they help.
At any rate, experts say its too soon to make any recommendations based on this specific study.
The researchers acknowledge that the work they have produced needs further investigation, Laughman said. So, while the study meets scientific rigor, it is one study.

Early intervention is meant to help any child with autism develop to their own full potential. The brain can respond to treatments more effectively at younger ages, which can make interventions more effective. As your child gets older, those interventions might include speech therapy, occupational therapy, mental health counseling, and whatever else experts believe will help your child thrive. The ultimate goal is “making the symptoms more manageable and enhancing life as much as possible,” says Dr. Silverman.
