A client e-mailed me within the last couple of weeks with what she thought was a silly question, but it was a good question. She wanted to know what her toddler should sleep in after a sleep sack and wanted to know when a toddler can/will keep a blanket on. This article will talk about what babies and toddlers sleep in at various ages.

It is probably rare that babies are not dressed warm enough as we, new parents, are overly worried our babies will be cold. But, babies can be dressed TOO warm just the same as not warm enough. In fact, it took us several weeks to a month to realize our few-week-old son cried a lot in the car seat because he was too hot! He was born in colder weather and we simply didnt know how toasty that car seat kept him. Finally, one day, I took him out and felt how sweaty he was and we stopped dressing him as if he was going hiking to the top of Mount Everest in the dead of winter.

Here are some general guidelines in what babies sleep in at various ages, but you do have to use your best judgment based on where you live, how hot/cold you keep the temperature in your house when your baby sleeps, and your babys preference , among other factors. These are just guidelines and you know your baby best.

When Should I Put My Baby On A Sleep Schedule And Establish A Routine

If it seems like you and your newborn are operating on opposite schedules, it’s probably not your imagination. But don’t bother trying to establish a soothing routine right away you both need a little time to adjust to your life together.

Once you’ve gotten used to your little one’s daily and nightly patterns, in the first month or so, you can start giving hints feeding, rocking, a soothing bath, a lullaby and a story that tell your little one it’s time to settle down, relax and hopefully fall asleep. But most babies can’t and shouldn’t be put on a sleep schedule until they’re at least around 3 or 4 months old.

You also can’t sleep train a newborn. Crying is how a newborn communicates his basic needs, and the most important lesson he needs to learn now isnt how to sleep on a schedule, but that when he cries, youll be there to comfort him even in the middle of the night when youre beyond exhausted.

When your little one is at least 4 to 6 months old, though, sleep training is an option. After all, everyone agrees that a key goal of new parenthood is a happy, well-rested baby. How you arrive at that goal is a bit more complicated.

In addition to clothing, temperature, and crib bedding here are ways to ensure your baby sleeps safely and comfortably.

  • The AAP firmly recommends nothing in the crib or bassinet under 12 months of age to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. This includes heavy blankets, hats, beanies, or thick crib bumpers. If you feel as though baby is cold, add an additional layer to his/her outfit.

Pillows are not necessary for babies they increase the risk of sudden death because they can cover the baby’s face or cause overheating. Older babies can climb on them and get out of the cot.
