Do: Know Babies Sleep A Lot
It may not seem like it at first! But your newborn may sleep about 16 hours a day, waking for feedings and changing. As babies get older they need less sleep during the day and more at night. By 6 months some babies should be able to sleep through the night plus take two to three naps. But don’t worry if they don’t: each baby is different.

From three months on, try to make a quiet, dark place for your baby to nap during the day. Babies become more awake and alert as they get older, so they dont sleep as well in places that have a lot of light and noise, like the family room.
Helping Babies Sleep And Settle In The Early Months
In the first six months of life, babies need to wake at night to get enough food for growth and development. For most babies, sleeping through the night and settling by themselves comes later, when theyre developmentally ready.
But there are three things you can do in the early months to help with baby sleep and settling:
- Emphasise the difference between night and day.
- Put your baby to bed drowsy but awake.
- Start a sleep routine.
And if you do these things in the first six months, it can help your baby learn to sleep and settle independently later on, when baby is developmentally ready.
Remember: responding to your baby and being flexible are the most important things in these early months. Its OK if your baby falls asleep while feeding sometimes. Its also fine to cuddle or rock your baby to sleep if theyre unsettled.

These practices include sleeping your baby on their back, making sure your babys head is uncovered during sleep, and sharing a room with your baby for the first year of life, or at least for the first six months.

Help Your Little One Learn To Fall Asleep Lying Still
Once she’s used to falling asleep being rocked or walked instead of eating, the next phase is to get her to fall asleep without rocking. So you begin with rocking, but then, before she is actually asleep, you stop rocking, and just sit, holding her calmly. If she protests, begin rocking again. Keep repeating this. It may take 25 attempts, but eventually she will begin falling asleep even though you have stopped rocking. Thats a real victory.
Do this for a week or so until she’s used to it as your new routine: getting sleepy while rocking and then falling asleep in your arms while not rocking.

Give Your Baby A Chance To Self Soothe
Do you pick your baby up with every whimper and hold him until he falls asleep? He likely struggles with napping in the crib because hes had few chances to fall asleep on his own. Hes grown used to the motion of the swing or the confines of your armsno wonder he cries when things are different.
But as you can imagine, doing the same things over and over will only perpetuate those same habits.
Letting him fall asleep in your arms or the swing wont help him in the long term. Instead, give him a chance to self soothe with each nap.
Lay him down when hes sleepy but awake, then check in every set number of minutes to reassure him that youre here and that its time to sleep. Resist the temptation to pick him up or revert to your old habits, as this will only confuse him. And keep your attitude positive so he doesnt sense any anxiety or worry.
At first, youll end up with short naps, but with consistency, hell learn the skills and confidence to fall asleep on his own. You should also start the process on the weekend so that you and your partner or another adult can support each other.

Dont Keep Your Baby Awake Too Long
Youd think an exhausted baby would mean a quick transition to a long nap, but unfortunately, thats hardly the case. Keeping your baby awake too long leads to him feeling overtired and less likely to sleep in long stretches. Hes almost too tired to fall asleep.
This is understandable, especially when sleep cues arent always easy to spot. If thats the case, watch the clock and dont let him stay awake longer than 90 minutes . By putting him down before he gets overtired, hell have a better chance of finally napping in the crib.
Begin To Break The Association Between Nursing/eating/sucking And Sleep
If your baby needs you to feed him or give him something to suck on in order to fall asleep, then he will always call for you to help him fall back asleep during the night. So your next step is to gradually break the association between sucking and falling asleep.
Usually, babies find it easiest if you start by rocking them. Yes, this is another sleep “crutch.” But it’s an easier sleep association to break than sucking is.
Feed your baby when he first wakes up from sleep, and again a bit later if he is awake and still hungry. But when he is just sleepy, experiment with walking or rocking him instead of feeding him. That way, he begins to learn to fall asleep without sucking. Of course, you are still using rocking or walking to get him to sleep, but we’ll break that sleep association in the next phase.
PLEASE NOTE: This does NOT ever mean you withhold food from a hungry baby. You don’t start this until your baby is several months old, nursing or eating well, and physically thriving. Infants need to eat very often, so you will often find that your infant is hungry and tired at the same time. If you walk or rock your baby and he continues to cry and protest, then he may very well be hungry as well as tired. In that case, feed him right away.

How To Transition Baby To Crib From Rock N Play
So before my kids were sleeping in their crib, they were in a pack n play next to my bed. Im sure you have your baby in something similar to a bassinet or the Rock n Play.
It is important to note that Rock n Play is not safe for babies to sleep in they have been recalled. Make sure you are using a safe sleeping area for your baby. Transition your baby to a crib and out of the rock n play.
Smaller spaces are best in the beginning, but eventually, they need more room. My babies also had a pack n play downstairs where they would usually take naps. I loved the pack n play that also had a changing table like this one here.
Safe Sleep Practices For Infants
Practice the ABCs of safe sleep: Babies should always sleep Alone, on their Backs, in a Crib. Place your baby on his or her back for every sleep, night time and nap time.
Do not put your baby to sleep on his side or tummy.
Once your baby can roll from his back to tummy and tummy to back, your baby can stay in the sleep position that he assumes. But always place your baby to sleep on his back.
Place your baby on a firm mattress in a safety-approved crib with slats no greater than 2-3/8 inches apart.
Make sure your babys face and head stay uncovered and clear of blankets and other coverings during sleep. If a blanket is used make sure your baby is placed feet-to-foot in the crib. Remove all pillows from the crib.
Create a smoke-free-zone around your baby.
Avoid overheating during sleep and maintain your babys bedroom at a temperature comfortable for an average adult.
Remove all mobiles and hanging crib toys by about the age of 5 months, when your baby begins to pull up in the crib.
Remove crib bumpers by about 12 months, when your baby can begin to climb
