Do Galactagogues Help Increase Milk Production
Galactagogues are herbs or medications that people can take to increase breast milk production.
Doctors can prescribe pharmaceutical galactagogues, such as domperidone and metoclopramide. A 2015 study identified that domperidone made a significant difference in milk production.
However, participants noted mild-to-moderate side effects, including dry mouth and headaches. The Food and Drug Administration does not approve these drugs to increase milk supply. Overall, there is limited data to support how effective prescription drugs are at increasing milk production.
Researchers have also used herbal galactagogues in studies to explore the benefits of natural milk production. Fenugreek is one of the more popular herbal galactagogues.
However, research shows that the baby and the person breastfeeding may experience side effects with herbal galactagogues, such as diarrhea. More scientific evidence is required to support the use of herbal compounds by clinicians.
Other factors can impact a persons milk production. Resting and following nutrition recommendations can help a person to maintain a consistent milk supply.
The following lifestyle and routine changes may help a person to produce more milk:
- practicing frequent skin-to-skin contact with the baby, especially during the first few days
- drinking at least 2 liters of water per day
- consuming caffeine moderately
- eating three nutritious meals per day

What Is Diaper Rash
Diaper rash usually happens when your baby wears a wet diaper for too long.
If youve ever gotten soft, white, wrinkled fingertips from staying in a swimming pool for too long, you know that wet skin can start to break down, which makes it more prone to damage. When your babys diaper gets wet, the same thing starts to happen. Their already-delicate skin rubs up against the diaper, which causes chafing and ultimately turns into a rash.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says more than half of all babies between 4 and 15 months develop diaper rash at least once in a two-month period. And some kids skin is just more prone to it than others.
Some children tend to have more sensitive skin, which includes the diaper area, they may have more frequent rashes, Dr. Kaari says. But other children hardly ever have them at all.

When sudden liquid bowel movements are contributing, its likely your babys red rash wont slacken and will gradually worsen in darkness and irritation. Intermediate flakes and scales could also arise, alongside miniature red swellings. Your babys skin may even start to peel as a result of severe diaper rash from diarrhea, and it will feel more uncomfortable for your child than milder conditions especially when paired with the likelihood of sickness causing the diarrhea in the first place.

What Causes Diaper Rash
The two biggest causes are wetness and friction. Basically, urine and stool from the diaper can irritate your babys skin over time. Diapers can also chafe or rub against your babys bottom, creating friction.
Changes in the pH of the skin from pee, poop or some skin products can cause rash.
In addition, soaps can break down skin over time, just as they break down germs and dirt. And, rarely, babies can be allergic to a specific ingredient in a diaper, wipe or soap.
While diaper rash can occur at any age, it is most common in babies 9 to 12 months old. It is also more likely to happen when your baby:
- Starts eating solid foods
- Begins sleeping through the night
- Has a cold or diarrhea
- Is taking antibiotics

How To Prevent Yeast Diaper Rash
The best way to prevent yeast diaper rash is by keeping babys skin healthy and dry. Heres what to keep in mind:
Reduce skin contact with pee and poop. Ideally, change babys diaper as soon as it gets soiled. That could be about as frequently as every two hours. Opt for diapers that have super-absorbent gelling material, which helps wick away moisture, and protect skin with a petrolatum product , which acts as a barrier between the skin and any urine or fecal matter.
Let the skin breathe. Do this by making sure diapers fit properly and arent attached too tightly. Using breathable disposable diapers will help. (We list some of them in this guide. So can letting baby go diaper-free during the day whenever you can.
Treat regular diaper rash as soon as possible. If redness occurs, treat it early with a diaper cream with zinc oxide in it, Fisher says.
