Sleep needs for babies vary depending on their age. Newborns do sleep much of the time. But their sleep is in very short segments. As a baby grows, the total amount of sleep slowly decreases. But the length of nighttime sleep increases.

Generally, newborns sleep about 8 to 9 hours in the daytime and about 8 hours at night. But they may not sleep more than 1 to 2 hours at a time. Most babies don’t start sleeping through the night without waking until they are about 3 months old, or until they weigh 12 to 13 pounds. About two-thirds of babies are able to sleep through the night on a regular basis by age 6 months.

Babies also have different sleep cycles than adults. Babies spend much less time in rapid eye movement sleep . And the cycles are shorter. The following are the usual nighttime and daytime sleep needs for newborns through 2 years old:

When Should My Baby Start Sleeping In A Crib

This is a common question, but its also the one that doesnt have a straight answer. It would pretty much depend on how old your baby is as well as how comfortable you are with him sleeping separately.

The truth is that parents have hard times the first few nights, even if the baby sleeps well and hes not bothered by the drastic change. It would be a good idea to put his or her crib in your room for the first few weeks. This will get you used to the infant’s breathing noises, hunger signals, and sleeping patterns.

This period usually takes about a year. Keep in mind that there is certain research which shows that babies have a significantly lower risk of developing SIDS when they sleep on a firm crib mattress on their back in the same room with their parents.

Some parents, however, are comfortable with moving the crib in a separate bedroom only after a few months. Safety-wise, theres nothing that you should be worried about. The most important thing that you have to consider if you want to enable your newborn to start sleeping on their own is how comfortable they and you are. It can be emotional for both of you when you choose to stop co-sleeping, so if you have decided that this is best for your family, dont be afraid to start slow.

If you are sharing a bed, move babys crib into your room by your bed and lay them in there. Once he or she gets used to that sleeping environment, you can slowly introduce them to the new world, which would be a separate bedroom, when you are ready.

Hunting for a fresh crib sheet after your baby soaks his diaper or spits up is miserable in the middle of the night, and turning on the lights can wake him up more fully, meaning getting him back to sleep can take an eternity. Instead, double layer ahead of time: Use a regular crib sheet, then a disposable waterproof pad, then another sheet on top. That way, you can just peel away the top layer and pad, throw the sheet in the hamper, and toss the waterproof pad. Also be sure to keep a one-piece, a swaddle, or a sleep sack nearby whatever it is your baby needs to continue the night comfortably so youre not hunting through drawers every time your babys diaper leaks.

How Does Breastfeeding Affect Safe Sleep

Breastfeeding for at least the first 6 of your babys life can reduce your babys risk of SIDS.

Its OK to breastfeed your baby in your bed. Before you start feeding, move any bedding and pillows from your bed in case you fall asleep. If you do fall asleep, move your baby to his crib or bassinet as soon as you wake up. Breastfeeding your baby in bed is safer than on a sofa or cushioned chair.

Babies often fall asleep while breastfeeding, especially when they get full. If you think your babys asleep and hasnt finished feeding, try to wake him gently by rubbing his back, tickling his feet, burping him or switching him to the other breast. If your babys not latched on correctly, he may fall asleep. You can break the latch by putting your pinky finger in the side of his mouth. Ask your lactation consultant to help you make sure your baby has a good latch. Latch is when your babys mouth is securely attached to the area around your nipple for breastfeeding.

Helping Your Baby Sleep

If you haven’t already, start a bedtime routine that will be familiar and relaxing for your baby. Bathing, reading, and singing can soothe babies and signal an end to the day. Some babies like to be swaddled , which can be done until they start to roll. Be consistent and your baby will soon associate these steps with sleeping.

If you rock your baby to sleep before bedtime, your little one may expect to be rocked to sleep after nighttime awakenings. Instead, try putting your baby into a crib or bassinet while drowsy but still awake. This way your baby will learn to fall asleep on his or her own.

Some babies squirm, whine, and even cry a little before falling back to sleep on their own. Unless you think that your baby is hungry or ill, see what happens if you leave your baby alone for a few minutes he or she might settle down.

If your baby wakes during the period that you want him or her to sleep, keep activity to a minimum. Try to keep the lights low and resist the urge to play with or talk to your baby. Change or feed your baby and return him or her to the crib or bassinet.

If your baby is waking early for a morning feeding, some small changes may allow a slight shift in schedule. You might try waking your baby for the late-night feeding at a time that suits your sleep schedule:

Why Doesn’t My Baby Sleep At Night

Up to about 3 months old, babies they don’t know how to differentiate night from day and, therefore, it is very common that they do not sleep during the hours we take to rest from the pull. We adults have two main stages of sleep, which we’ll describe below to understand what babies’ sleep cycles are and why they don’t sleep at night:

  • Non-REM sleep: is the time when people rest fully. It has three important subphases: wakefulness, rest and deep sleep. In the latter it is very difficult for us to wake up.
  • REM sleep: it is a very short phase in which nightmares and dreams occur.

A sleep cycle is the composition of REM sleep and non-REM sleep and, as adults, we repeat these cycles 5 to 6 times in approximately 8 hours. Once the sleep cycle ends, we go through a micro-awakening that adults are not aware of and go back to sleep without realizing it.

Babies, on the other hand, have shorter cycles and they are not able to link each cycle, so its totally normal for them to wake up and wake up or seek help to continue sleeping. Here, hunger usually doesn’t play a role, so feeding them more to sleep for more hours won’t work.

Gradually, when your pace of development and learning slows down, sleep will begin to resemble that of adults.
