Let Your Baby Cry It Out

One crying-it-out type of sleep training is the well-known Ferber Method, also known as “Progressive Watching” or “Graduated Extinction.” The goal is to teach your baby how to sleep on their own and put themselves back to sleep if they wake up during the night. Richard Ferber, MD, director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children’s Hospital Boston, developed this method. He advises parents not to start this training until their baby is at least 5 or 6 months old. Heres an overview of how its done:

  • Put your baby in their crib — drowsy, but awake. Once you’ve finished their bedtime routine, leave the room.
  • If your baby cries, wait a few minutes before you check on them. The amount of time you wait depends on you and your baby. You might start waiting somewhere between 1 and 5 minutes.
  • When you re-enter your babys room, try to console them. But do not pick them up and do not stay for more than 2 or 3 minutes, even if they are still crying when you leave. Seeing your face will be enough to assure your baby that you are close by so they can eventually fall asleep on their own.
  • If they continue crying, gradually increase the amount of time you wait before going in to check on them again. For instance, if you wait 3 minutes the first time, wait 5 minutes the second time, and 10 minutes each time after that.
  • The next night, wait 5 minutes the first time, 10 minutes the second time, and 12 minutes each time after that.

The Cry It Out Method

The CIO is a traditional sleep training technique alongside the Ferber method. It is also the most controversial.

They both involve letting your baby cry till they are exhausted enough to sleep. For many parents, this is an extreme method of sleep training your baby.

As the name implies, your baby will have to cry it out till they realize that crying wont always get them the attention they seek.

Babies are huge attention seekers, well they are infants, and they are cute, and they know they are the center of your world. Sometimes they cry because they need you to pick them up, play with them, feed them, show them attention.

But you cant continue doing this all the time, especially at night when you desperately need some rest. So to enforce good sleep patterns, specialists claim that you let your baby cry till they tiredly sleep off.

Just like the Ferber method, go through your usual bedtime preparations, then place your baby in their crib while they are drowsy but awake. Then say goodnight and leave the babys room.

Unlike the check and console method, where you periodically check on your child to establish your presence and console them when they fuss. CIO entails you going cold turkey.

You literally leave them on their own. And if they cry out their displeasure, you ignore them until the baby has no choice but to sleep off. This technique may go on for a week or two before the baby learns to self-soothe.

Keeping Baby Warm At Night

Dr. Hes and Crockett both agree that a very important factor in how to dress your baby for sleep so that they are safe and comfortable has less to do with specific pajama, sleep sack, or swaddle styles, and more to do with the babyâs temperature throughout the night. âThe suggested year-round room temperature to reduce the risk of overheating or SIDS is 68-72 degrees,â says Crockett, so caregiversâ focus should really be on trying to keep their babyâs nursery as close to that temperature range as possible.

Of course, depending on where the babyâs room is located this may be easier said than done, like if the nursery is next to an attic or over a garage, for example. In the warmer months, Dr. Hes suggests sticking to sleep sacks made from cotton but then considering one made from fleece in the colder months. âIf the room is drafty or cold a child can wear a soft cotton hat,â she adds, âRemember babies lose most of their body heat from their head because it takes up a large percentage of their body surface area.â

Overall, by knowing how to dress your baby for sleep in a safe way youâre also knowing how to dress them for a comfortable, restful night of sleep. Remember, the three things to focus on are: breathable fabrics, an age-appropriate extra layer, and temperature control.

The Pick Up Put Down Method

Unlike the CIO method, this approach entails you picking up your baby when they cry and putting them back in their crib as soon as they stop.

It requires a lot of patience, a lot of back and forth before your baby can get the hang of it.

The trick is not to linger when you pick your baby. As soon as they stop crying, please place them in the crib and leave the room. You can combine this technique with the Ferber method. They work well together.

Appreciate The Power Of A 30

When youre running up an enormous sleep debt, you might think a 30-minute nap will make little difference to your health.

But recent research confirms that all naps are not the same. When youre sleep deprived, the brain compensates by rendering naps more restorative than usual.

In one study, volunteers permitted to sleep only 2 hours at night showed the typical abnormalities in their stress hormone and immune factor chemistry. But after just two 30-minute naps, those irregularities were entirely normalized .

If your baby is gaining weight properly, you dont have to wake them at night for feedings. Your baby needs to find them own sleep schedule. Once they are eating more in the daytime, they dont need to wake and eat at night.

Here are some instances where you should wake your baby:

  • They are sleeping more in the day than the night and missing their daytime feeds.
  • Dont let them go more than 4 hours without eating during the day. You may need to wake the baby up to feed at night, but it is probably better to try to change your babys daytime habits rather than continuing to wake them every 4 hours at night.
