Whatever bed you choose for your newborn , it is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics that your baby sleep in the same room with you for the first 6-12 months of life. In addition, bumpers, blankets, pillows, and soft toys are no longer recommended in baby beds. Talk about going minimalistic!
Although the AAP doesnt recommend sharing a bed with your baby, most breastfeeding mothers will fall asleep with their baby in their bed at some point, so its wise to keep a checklist of safe bedsharing guidelines on hand.

That way you can send a link to a list of your favorite items. This also helps avoid receiving duplicate items.

What You Don’t Need
You need a lot of stuff for a baby from the time theyre a newborn to the time theyre six months old. Heres a checklist of the things you dont need either because theyre dangerous, theyre not age appropriate, or you simply dont need them.
- A crib bumper. Crib bumpers are dangerous, period. Theyre also unnecessary. If you dont believe us, please believe the American Academy of Pediatrics on this subject. If youre in an ongoing debate with your spouse about a bumper, you can put one on the outside of a crib as a compromise.
- A stuffed animal or Lovie. Again, do not give your infant a stuffed animal to sleep with. Go ahead and get her one, just put it on a shelf for now. Kids love lovies, but they dont care about them just yet, trust us. We wrote more on safe sleep guidelines here.
- A blanket. Please see above.
- Anything that promotes co-sleeping. Please, please see above.
- A copious amount of toys. Were all about cool baby toys. But, you just dont need a lot right now. Your baby will be much more fascinated by human faces, and given he cant move or grasp yet, showing him ordinary household objects is great entertainment for now. - Babyproofing stuff. Infants under 6 months typically dont crawl. Babyproof, just not yet youve got plenty of other stuff to worry about.

When Can You Travel With Your Baby
How you’re traveling with your little one will certainly influence when you can make the trip, as well as what to pack. Most doctors recommend avoiding unnecessary travel with very young infants since their immune systems are still developing.
So if youre traveling by plane with your baby, talk to your pediatrician first before booking tickets. Though there’s no official approved age for flying, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly discourages air travel with very young babies, since it can increase a newborn’s risk of getting sick.
It’s especially risky to fly with a baby or a toddler during the COVID-19 pandemic, as children younger than 5 are not eligible yet for the vaccine, making them particularly vulnerable to the virus and specifically the Delta variant.
Some airlines might not accept passengers younger than a certain age either, so check with yours about any age restrictions before buying your tickets.
Most major airlines allow you to travel on domestic flights with your little one in your lap until shes 2 years old for free. But the Federal Aviation Administration and the AAP do not recommend doing this, instead advising that your baby travels in her own seat strapped into a compatible car seat or safety restraint designed for air travel.
