When Should I Replace Baby Bottles

BABY BOTTLE NIPPLE SIZES||Philips Avent Natural Bottles

Theres no official guidance about this, though manufacturers might advise how often to replace teats usually every three months or so.

For the bottle itself, watch out for chips, cracks and discolouration that isnt from lasagne night, all of which could present a danger or indicate that the material is damaged.

For the teat, check often for wear and tear, weakening patches or bitten-through ends, and replace as soon as you find any. As with all baby equipment, its much better to err on the side of caution.

How We Made Our Picks For The Best Baby Bottles

When it came to choosing bottles, we focused on a wide variety of bottles in different sizes and shapes and for different needs.

Bottles also had to provide something extra for parents, be it easy cleaning or a convenient design that allows for simple storage, among other perks. Nipple shape and feel also really matter when it comes to babys successful transition to a bottle, so the nipples that came with the bottles needed to be designed to encourage secure latching.

How Many Ounces Do I Feed A Breastfed Baby

When babies are born, their tummies are only about the size of a cherry and can hold about 1-1.5 teaspoons of milk. Therefore, during the first month of life 1-3 ounces of milk per feeding is adequate. If you plan to continue breastfeeding, its best to breastfeed as much as possible during this time and not introduce a bottle until 4-6 weeks.

However, if you need to give a bottle, 1-3 ounces per feeding should be sufficient during the first month. The great thing about babies is that they are intuitive eaters, which means they will let you know if they are still hungry and want more. Likewise, they will stop when they are full. From one month old and beyond, 3-4 ounces of milk is recommended per feeding.

Best Baby Bottle For Breastfed Babies: Lansinoh Momma Baby Bottle

The 10 Best Baby Bottles of 2021

We tried every bottle on the market then found the Lansinoh mOmma after a recommendation. It worked. – Mumsnet user

Sturdily made with an exceptionally well-designed teat, the Lansinoh mOmma is, quite frankly, indestructible. There, we said it.

Made from solid PP plastics, its squat, curved shape feels comfortable in the hand. It doesnt show any damage after being scrubbed with a sponge, and it doesnt drip at all when held upside down or sideways or dropped onto a hard floor. Your little destructor will have no chance.

But its the silicone NaturalWave® teat thats the mOmmas big selling point. Designed to promote a babys natural peristaltic tongue movement when sucking, its beautifully soft and well shaped. Anecdotally , its a brilliant bottle to introduce to a breastfed baby, especially if that baby has refused other bottles before.

Wide-necked and with clear ml/fl oz markings that wont fade with repeated washing, its easy to make up at any time of the day or night. It fits in the vast majority of electric and microwave sterilisers and, with three parts , its quick to take apart and hand wash too. Just be aware that if you put it in the dishwasher on lasagne night, it will start to take on a rosier hue.

Price: $$This bottle was along with Dr. Browns by far the top parent favorite in our research. The Comotomo Baby Bottle, while pricier than many other options, was reported to provide superior feel and function when it comes to mimicking mamas breast. Its made of a soft, squeezable silicone that babies seem to love holding and also allows you to control the flow to help mimic moms letdown reflex. It has a very wide nipple base and a more realistic nipple shape and feel. This allows baby to latch and suck in a very similar manner to when they nurse at the breast. For moms worried about nipple confusion in their breastfed baby, this bottle earns the top spot.It also has a venting system built into the nipple base , which makes it easy to clean and may be helpful for reducing gas. All parents we talked to, whether feeding formula or breast milk, loved this bottle. Considerations: Several parents did say that the nipples wore thin over time and needed to be replaced.

Todays Hint: How To Save Money On Baby Bottles

January 13, 2014 By Hint Mama

Soon after my daughter was born, it became obvious that we were going to have to give her a bit of formula while we waited for my breast milk supply to come in. The lactation consultant at the hospital recommended that we buy a particular bottle The First Years Breastflow bottle to help avoid giving my daughter a nipple confusion problem.

So Im embarrassed to admit that my husband and I, bottle buying novices that we were, went out and bought 10 of the bottles in the 5 oz. version. At the time, we thought this large purchase would help us save cleaning time and would be the only bottle purchase wed need to make. We didnt realize, however, that not only do you need to update bottle nipples for older babies that can drink more quickly, but you also typically need bigger bottles for older babies because they can drink more milk.

Fast forward a few months, and we had to buy larger bottles, as well as faster flowing nipples, to handle our daughters growing appetite, and those older 5 oz. bottles including at least half that were never used went into storage.

Many other moms also advocate this approach. I think it is pointless and a waste to get 4oz. bottles. My first one drank more than 4oz. very early on, wrote one mom in the What to Expect forums.

What are your tips for cutting baby bottle costs?

Baby Bottle Material: Glass Or Plastic

Both materials have advantages and disadvantages, although their characteristics are very similar.

  • Glass
    • It is easy to sterilize and clean.
    • It does not absorb odors or flavors of food.
    • It is heat resistant, so it is suitable for the microwave.
    • It weighs more than plastic.
    • It breaks more easily if it is falls to the ground.
  • Plastic
    • It is lighter than glass.
    • It is not broken, so it is more appropriate when the baby is already beginning to hold the bottle alone.
    • There are some baby bottles that resist temperature changes.
    • It can absorb the color of some foods, so with the use they can be damaged more easily.
    • It is recommended to check that they do not contain Bisphenol A , a chemical compound used to manufacture plastics, whose use in baby bottles is forbidden in the European Union.

Tip: Baby bottles that can be unscrewed are easier to clean. Those with handles are more difficult to clean. You can also find self-sterilizing bottles, what can be very useful if you are traveling with your baby.

What Size Bottle And Teat Should I Buy

Bottles almost always come in more than one size. While the smallest size might look most appropriate for a newborn, its actually the teat flow that matters most. Wed recommend buying the next bottle size up because your baby will be drinking more milk before you know it, and you dont want to have to replace the bottles too soon. Plus, its important to be sure that your baby is feeding till theyre properly full.

Teat flow sizes are designed to stop a small baby choking on milk coming out faster than they can swallow and larger babies from having to work too hard to suck milk out of a small hole.

Many brands use approximate age ranges to label their teats, but only use these as a guide. Generally, if your baby takes longer than 20 minutes to finish a feed, falls asleep regularly while feeding or tugs at the teat while feeding, it may be a sign that theyre ready for the next size up.

Bottles For The Formula Fed Baby

Philips Avent Natural Newborn Baby Bottle Starter Set ...

If your baby is on formula from birth, it can really vary how many bottles youll use. Youll need to take two things into consideration when deciding how many bottles youll need:-

How often you plan to wash and sterilise bottles AND whether you will be making up a lot of bottles in advance or simply making one immediately prior to feeds.

  • For the stay at home baby: As a mimimum its a good idea to have three, although the above factors will probably influence how many you need. If you do plan to make bottles ahead, buy one for every two and a half hours.
  • For the baby that goes to day care or sitters: Youll need at least one for every two and a half hours, plus some spares at home if youre too busy or not in the mood to clean and sterilise some. Most carers require bottles to be premade.

Basic Information About Bottle

Its a good idea to start introducing a bottle to your baby between 3 and 6 weeks of age. After that, it may be a little more difficult to get your baby into using a bottle. Remember that your baby gets to decide the right bottle for him/her. If your little one is fussy because he/she is trying too hard to suck, or even worse, is choking because the milk flows too fast, you should consider trying a different bottle or nipple.

You dont have to warm milk before feeding, as some babies like lukewarm milk too, but most will want it about the same temperature as mommys breast milk.

So if you give baby freshly expressed milk, you dont need to warm it, but if you have stored it in the fridge, warming it up to 98°F may be needed to avoid bottle refusal.

Most newborns will want to feed every 2 to 3 hours or 8 to 12 times a day. As your baby grows , this will normally lessen to 7 to 9 times a day.

Finally, remember you only get to choose how many bottles and what other items to use, but your baby gets the final decision on which bottles they want.
