Skip The Graphic Tees
I ask that my clients stray from graphic tees, as they can often be distracting and take away from the overall image. Funny words and phrases are fine in limited capacity but only for a few shots. I want the story to be about the connection between baby and parents. Rather than reading the words my mom loves me on a shirt, I want my clients to actually see the love in the photograph.Sabrina Guyton-Wright, @sgwphoto
Consider Where The Photos Will Be Displayed
When choosing a newborn session wardrobe, think about the final results and how the photos will be featured in the home. For example, you wouldnt want clothing in loud, bold colors if the home is mostly neutrals and pastels. Then again, if bold contrast is the look youre going for, thats fine! Just have an idea of how the final images will look in the home.Sabrina Guyton-Wright, @sgwphoto
For New Moms Look For Clothing That Moves And Flows
I always prefer fabric that moves or has texture. Women who have just delivered a baby do not feel like the most beautiful versions of themselves . Fabric that moves and flows is a flattering option, especially when choosing ivories and whites for your color choice. Textures are also wonderful, as they add visual appeal but dont distract the viewer. I also love the look of a dress on new moms. Instead of a fitted maternity dress, choose one with movement. Think maternal, classic and beautiful flow., @julie_kulbago_photography

The Big Question What Should Everyone Else Wear At The Newborn Photography Session
As a newborn & baby Photography studio in San Jose, Bay Area, I get asked this question a lot. Sure you provide all the wraps, outfits, backdrps and props for our newborn but what should parents siblings or grandparents wear for the newborn or baby photo session?
booking a photo shoot with a professional photographer to capture different milestones in your life is an exciting experience. Especially when you have a perfect little addition to your family and have booked a newborn photography or baby photography session to celebrate. In this post, Ill be sharing a few samples of outfit choices by some of my clients. Outfits that look pretty great for their family photos during their newborn photography or baby Photography sessions.
I want to start by saying that there is no one formula for picking out the best outfits for a family photo. I strongly believe that what makes you feel beautiful is the most important criteria for choosing what to wear during your photo session. This ultimately depends on your personal taste. However seeing a few samples of what other people have chosen to wear for their family photos will give you a better idea of what you may like.
A Few Other Rules Of Thumb To Keep In Mind When You Are Picking Out Your Outfit For A Family Or Newborn Photo Session
Keep the patterns to a minimum. One patterned shirt looks great, but too many can be distracting and not mesh well.
Avoid clothes that have big graphics on them or with words and logos on them. These can be distracting and draws the eye to the words rather than your faces.
I loved the blue-green color of this moms sweater and the color it added to the photos. I also like how the baby was in a plain white onesie to keep it simple and classic.

Tip : Think About The Details
Think your outfit through all the way to the bottom layer. Make sure bra straps will tuck away and that youve chosen underwear that arent pinching or squeezing anywhere.
If youre breast feeding and want to wear a maternity bra during your session choose one that you like the look of, that matches the colour of your outer layers, and that fits well. Again, you want to be able to move and snuggle without stopping to readjust or hide straps all the time.
Also think through those top layer details. My advice is to keep your accessories simple and classic. Watches can really pull focus in a photo, so I recommend leaving them off for the day unless theyre of sentimental importance.
Tip #: Snap In Shifts
We took several photos with just the baby, and then baby and me, and we only brought the older girls in for the few photos we needed them in. Itâs way easier on little people when they only have to cooperate for a few minutes than stand around waiting for their turn! They have way fewer opportunities to get into trouble and frustrate Mom & Dad too.

What To Wear Accessories
No big accessories. I cannot stress this enough. The first thing someone says when they look at your images should be oh what a gorgeous baby! If the first thing they see is a giant flower, or giant bow, or giant hat thats not a good thing. Accessories for mom and dad should be kept to a minimum. You are likely going to be holding the baby against you and you dont want anything uncomfortable or that can leave a mark on them. If you want to do a necklace with your outfit, think small and simple. Watches should be removed simply because a lot of images will focus on your hands and arms and, again, we dont want to detract from that gorgeous baby.
Tip #: Make Your House Warm For The Newborn Photoshoot
If you shoot in a studio, they’ll most likely know this tip for newborn photography and be prepared, but if you’re shooting in your house and your postpartum hormones are off the charts and you’re sweating like mine usually are, DON’T crank your air conditioning! Sweat it out as best you can and keep your house nice and warm. That baby is not going to like being naked for pictures if he/she is cold and newborns get cold super easily! If your house is toasty warm though, baby won’t care at all.
When we shot Anabelle’s photos we did them in our house that was nice and cool because I was hot . We also used a studio that my photographer had access to, but it wasn’t set up for newborn photos so it was cold and drafty. The one picture I had envisioned for Anabelle’s photos was of her peacefully sleeping so that we could make a Christmas card that year that said, sleep in heavenly peace, or silent night. Instead we have this picture below hahaha.

Can Dad Wear His Loungewear
Try to coordinate moms outfit colours with dad, so we dont clash or have too much patterns competing. I suggest plain sweater or simple shirts with some nice pants. In-home sessions take place in your home but try to avoid loungewear! Remember to empty your pockets so we dont have any phone or keys bulk in your photos!
Newborn session doesnt need to be stressful, my top priority is that you feel comfortable. If you need help choosing an outfit, give me a shout! I will give you some Pintrest boards for inspiration.

Clothing Recommendations For Dads
With dads, it is pretty simple. The same rules of plain clothing would apply. Same as mums, you would both decide if you go for lighter or darker background images. I recommend bringing both sets anyway.
Very often I photograph dads with no tops on. Of course, it is up to each of you if you want to do that. Sometimes dads want to show their tattoos, and I would either then photograph dad with no top on or maybe something like tank top/sleeveless top on.
If you wish your photos to look more formal, you can bring a few shirts too. Dark and light, and avoid lines in clothing.

Wear White/cream Neutrals Or Pastels For Summer Newborn Photos
- Shades of cream and white are always timeless and complement the fresh innocence of your baby.
- Neutral colors keep the attention on your baby and your connection with your newborn.
- Pastels are great for summer sessions and lend a soft look to your images.
- Avoid black and very dark colors. Often, moms may gravitate towards dark colors since they can be flattering. But, black can look like a harsh contrast against a new baby. Black also easily shows lint and can get lost in shadows.
TIP: Choose colors that complement rather than clash with your babys nursery so that your images will look cohesive when displayed on the wall in her room.
Styling Tips For Summer:
- Select more cheerful colors for your summertime portraits.
- Take advantage of light cotton, pretty sheers and lace. Light and breezy outfits are also great for the summer heat.
- Gingham patterns for the boys and summer dresses for the girls.
- Dont feel the need to be too formal during your summer photo session. Try slipping on your sandals and frolicking on the beach. Youre sure to get some candid shots!

A Simple White Onesie
I generally recommend avoiding a stark white, however, Im never sad to see a plain white onesie on a fresh baby. Theres just something so classic and timeless about that look. So if youre at a loss for what to put on baby, dont feel like you have to find the cutest thing they own. Sometimes that simple onesie does just right on babe.

I wanted to share what to wear during newborn photos!
We did newborn photos with Lilly Ryann when she was 7 days old and still really sleepy. I remember doing Brooks newborn photos when he was 13 days old and he was so awake it made it more challenging! If you have the choice, I recommend doing photos early.
Its hard to believe that our sweet Lilly Ryann is here and has completed our family of four! Brooks is absolutely in love with his baby sister as he refers to her as baby Lilly. He is always giving her hugs, kisses, pounding fists, and practicing tummy time with her. We couldnt have asked for a better transition going from 1 to 2. We feel so truly blessed! To all of you mamas out there its SO MUCH easier going from 1 to 2 than 0 to 1, I promise you!

What To Wear For A Newborn Photo Shoot
Your beautiful baby has arrived, and you are over the moon for them. You have the newborn session booked, Babys outfit is chosen, and the house is clean . However, one fear keeps looming what are YOU going to wear?! Im happy to help you figure that out!
Neutrals/light colors are always a winner for newborn sessions. Creams, grays, light blues, and soft pinks create an airy feel to your photos, and match with the softness of your little one. Stay away from large logos , avoid black and neon colors to not overshadow the star of the show: your new baby!
Side note: if you are a major color-lover, dont go neutral just because be true to you! If your home is full of bright hues and rainbows are your jam, show that off in your session!
Mamas, wear what you feel best in. For our own newborn session, I wore solid black yoga pants and one of my favorite tops. We wanted the lifestyle feel for our at-home shoot, so going barefoot with my comfortable pants on was how I felt pretty and presentable! For you, it may be a flowy dress, a layered scarf, or even your favorite white tee. Whatever you choose, know that you look beautiful and you have an absolutely wonderful reason to be doing a photo shoot!
As for dads, have him wear what is complimentary to your outfit. If you are wearing solids, he could wear something with a light pattern, like a sweater or button-down shirt. Its ideal to coordinate, but not totally match for these photos. Denim shirts always look great!
What To Wear And How To Prepare For An In
In-home newborn photo sessions are all about capturing the authentic beauty of the real-life moments that are emblematic of having a newborn baby. My greatest hope is that one day, when your baby has grown out of onesies and sleepy snuggles, looking back at photos from our newborn session will transport you back to the way this particular and fleeting time in your life FEELS.
So, in theory, I want our session to be as similar to a chunk of your everyday as possible because thats what I want you to remember. Much of a session with me will be documenting all the ways you care for and love on your baby, so you dont even need to have baby ready for pictures when I arrive. Feeding, diapering, dressing, changing, snuggling, and adoring your little one are the main event.
But there are a few things that can help to amplify the beauty in all those precious moments.
A quick tidy of clutter on end tables can help to clear the scene for what we really want to be focusing on. That being said, rest is super important during the postpartum period, and I certainly dont want you to spend your time cleaning. And really, bottles or breast pump parts, a stack of diapers, and a book about babies laying around is pretty indicative of this moment in time, so dont worry about things like that. Really, just tossing the wrapper from your granola bar and stashing the stack of mail thats piling up are the types of things Id recommend.

What To Wear For Newborn Photos
Let me start this post by sayingI have learned A LOT since Elle was a newborn. Back then, I was working full time in a corporate job and while I had a similar aesthetic and loved fashion, shoes, shopping, etc., I definitely was not a pro when it came to ensuring that came through in photos.
Below, a bit about what I learned from Elles newborn photos and also some ideas for outfits you might like if you have a baby on the way.
And now, the outfits
Newborn Photoshoot: What To Wear
#1 What My Newborn Should Wear
When we think about photoshoots, we tend to imagine wearing our most expensive clothes, the same thing goes for our babies. However, if you are preparing for a newborn photo session you dont have to think about getting your baby to wear an extravagant outfit or anything specific. Our photographer knows what shes doing and she will have everything ready for your baby.
#2 What Should Parents Wear
The best thing that makes a newborn photoshoot more intimate is to make the viewers see the bond between the parents. We advise parents to wear outfits that coordinate well with each other. If the mother decides to wear something blue, the father should do it as well. You can also ask your photographer what would be the best outfit or motif to wear so you two can also match with your baby.
#3 No to Bold Patterns
Parents should also remember to avoid wearing fabrics with bold patterns such as stripes, polka dots, or large flowery clothes. It can make the photo look bold, taking away the innocent and soft vibes that a newborn photoshoot should have.
#4 Avoid Bright Colours
Bright colours can also be too catchy, and instead of giving the spotlight to your newborn, your bright coloured dress might just take everyones attention from them. Its best to wear clothes that complement well with the aesthetic and innocent vibes of your newborn photoshoot.
#5 Dont Mind Your Footwear
