10 Things You’ll Need For Your New Puppy

A supplemental heat source may be needed for the first two weeks when puppies rely on the dams body heat and the warmth of littermates to maintain a normal body temperature. A heat source in the center of the whelping box encourages puppies to stay away from the edges where there is a greater risk for the dam to lie on them. Appropriate heat sources include heat lamps, electric or water-filled heating pads, and microwavable heating pads.

The best bedding materials for a whelping box are soft, warm, have good traction, and are easily cleaned and disinfected. They should be insect-free, moisture resistant, and not easily ingested by puppies. You should avoid hay, straw, shavings, or stiff particles that can cause eye and skin irritation. Materials such as rags, blankets, or carpeting that allow puppies to crawl underneath and potentially be smothered by the dam also should be avoided. Waterproof bedding on the bottom can be layered with a flannel-top whelping pad that repels moisture to help keep puppies warm.

Getting a new litter of puppies off to a good start requires a breeder to pay careful attention to signs of problems. Experience in breeding litters helps you gain confidence and know when to take steps to help a puppy in distress.

Colors Of The Pitbull For Sale

The breed standard for a pitbull for sale is specific with regards to both temperament and physical characteristics. You will see the greatest allowable variations only in color. Most colors are acceptable for purebred pitbull puppies. If you find pitbull puppies for sale near you, you may be able to choose from fawn, blue, red, black and tan, solid black, or brindle. Any color can show varying degrees of white from none or very little to large areas of the face, chest, and trunk.

Once rare, blue nose pitbull puppies have begun to rise to prominence in the pet and show lines. A dilution gene that causes a dogs blue coat also dilutes the nose leather so it is not truly black. These dogs will also have light-colored eyes even as adults. Similarly, red-nosed Pitbulls have a dilution gene that causes a light-colored coat as well as a red nose and red-rimmed eyes. Keep in mind that color dilution of the coat does not always affect the nose. Blue nose pitbull puppies can have a steel gray coat and still possess a black or even a red nose.

What Shall I Do If The Mother Refuses To Stay With The Puppies

This is common with pets that are closely attached to their owners. If the mother will not stay with her puppies, try relocating mother and puppies so she can be nearer to you.

Puppies cannot maintain their own body heat for a week or two after birth.

Make sure the puppies are kept warm. Young puppies cannot maintain their own body temperature for a week or two after birth.

As long as the puppies stay close to their mother, the room temperature is not too critical. However, if the mother leaves her puppies alone, they need to be provided with an external source of warmth. During the first four days of life, the environmental temperature where the puppies are kept should be maintained at 85-90°F . The temperature may then be gradually decreased to approximately 80°F by the seventh to tenth day, and to about 72°F by the end of the fourth week.

It is not necessary to heat the whole room to these temperatures. Heating the area over the whelping box with the aid of a heat lamp is usually all that is necessary. The larger the litter the lower the environmental temperature needs to be, since the puppies will huddle together and keep each other warm. The puppies behavior and condition gives an indication whether they are comfortable and healthy. If they are warm and content they will be quiet and gaining weight, otherwise they will be restless and crying.

Prepare Your Dog For The Babys Touch And Movement

Handling

When your child is old enough to understand the lesson, youll teach him to handle your dog gently. However, not knowing any better, young babies often grab dogs fur, ears, tails and anything else within reach. To prepare your dog for this inevitability, accustom her to the types of touching you can expect from your baby, including grabbing, poking, pushing and pulling. If you teach your dog that good things happen when she gets poked and prodded, shell be able to better tolerate potentially uncomfortable interactions with the baby.

Poke the Pup

Poke your dog gently and then give her a treat. Gently tug on her ear and then give a treat. Gently grab her skin or pinch her and then give a treat. In a cheery voice, say something like Oh, what was that? each time you poke, pull or pinch your dog. Later on, when the baby does these things, you can say the same phrase. With repetition, your dog will start to anticipate tasty treats and simply look to you each time she gets pinched or grabbed. Practice these handling exercises four to eight times per day, and use especially exciting treats, like cheese, chicken or hot dogs. . When you start your training, be very gentle. Over time, make your touches more intense, like they will be when the baby delivers them.

If There Were Complications In Delivery What Do I Have To Do To Care For Newborn Puppies

For the next two months, even if everything went smoothly with the birth, you have a lot of work to do! After the birthing process, clean up the mother as much as possible without upsetting her using a warm water and washcloth. Do not use any soaps or disinfectants unless instructed to by your veterinarian. Remove any soiled newspaper or bedding from her whelping box.

Normally the new mother will spend most of her time with the puppies. For the first few days it may be difficult to get her to leave the nest even to go to the bathroom. However, it is important that she continue to urinate and defecate normally. Do not be afraid of putting her on a collar and leash and taking her out for a short period if she refuses to go on her own. She will only want to be out for a few minutes but during that time you can clean up the bed and make the whelping box safe for the puppies.

Before she returns to her puppies, check her nipples and vulva to make sure there are no problems such as bleeding, foul smelling discharges, or any other abnormalities.

Caring For Orphaned Newborn Puppies

BUYING MY NEW PUPPY ANYTHING SHE TOUCHES!

The term orphaned does not always mean that the mother of the litter dies. It is also used to refer to puppies whose dam is either unable or unwilling to nurse them. If this happens, you will need to step up to the plate as nursemaid.

The best replacement milk for puppies is a commercial puppy milk formula. Cows milk does not have the same nutritional content as dogs milk and is not a suitable substitute, as it does not have enough calories, calcium, or phosphorous for growing pups. Puppy formula bags come with manufacturers instructions regarding mixing guidelines and how much to feed. If you have questions about these instructions, contact your veterinarian.

Feeding orphan puppies can be a little tricky. Some puppies take a little while to get the sucking part of feeding down. If they dont nurse right away, you may have to take them in to see the veterinarian, so that he or she can show you how to tube feed to get the puppies started.

Feeding itself is usually straightforward. Warm up the formula to body temperature and angle the bottle to prevent air bubbles. You may need to enlarge the hole in the nipple, which is best done with a hot needle while the bottle is inverted. Always feed a puppy facedown, never on its back or upright, as this could cause it to choke. Puppies should nurse enthusiastically, but not too rapidly, as this can cause indigestion. The puppies should be burped during and after each feeding.

How To Keep Newborn Puppies Warm

It’s very important that the puppies stay in a warm room. If they are with their mother, they will try to stay snuggled up with her and rely on her body heat and each other to stay warm. They can’t regulate their own body temperature, so they depend on outside sources for warmth. Have you ever seen a pile of puppies? They like to snuggle for the warmth and comfort.

When the mother leaves to go outside or just get a break, it’s important that they have another source for heat. You can either keep the room warm or put a heat lamp over the area where the puppies are being kept.

VCA suggests that the temperature be around 85 to 90 degrees F for the first few days. After that, it can be lowered to about 80 degrees F by the end of the first week or so to about 72 degrees F by the end of the fourth week.

How Do I Feed Orphaned Puppies

Most puppies will suckle on small pet nursing bottles, also known as pet nursers. When bottle fed, puppies will nurse until they are full and then reject the bottle.

Be sure the opening in the nipple restricts the outflow of fluid to one drop at a time in order to avoid a flow rate that is too rapid for the puppy. When the flow rate is too rapid, it can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, and/or death and when the flow is too slow they have to work too hard to nurse.

When feeding, hold the puppy in a horizontal, head-neutral position as it would be when feeding from its mother. If the puppy is too weak to suckle, your veterinarian can show you alternative feeding methods and assist in tube feeding if needed.

TIP: Handling puppies during feeding contributes to critical socialization.

Teach Your Dog To Like Other Children

Your child will eventually want to have friends over to play, so its important for your dog to become comfortable with unfamiliar children.

If you have friends with kids, ask them to visit as often as possible. Make sure your dog has a wonderful time during these visits. If she already likes kids, ask young visitors to toss her favorite toy or tell her to sit or lie down to earn tasty treats. If you dont have friends with children, take your dog on frequent outings in well-populated areas. When you encounter friendly children who would like to interact with your dog, take advantage of the situation. Coach them carefully to ensure good experiences. Always give them treats to feed or toss your dog. If your dog is great with your own child but nervous, fearful or aggressive around other children, seek assistance from a qualified professional as soon as possible. Dont wait until your child matures and your dogs behavior becomes a problem. Please see our article on Finding Professional Behavior Help to locate a behaviorist in your area now.
