Understanding And Responding To Your Newborn Babys Behaviour

Your newborn baby is working out what the world is like. The way you respond to your babys behaviour, especially crying, tells your baby a lot about the world.

For example, your baby might find out that when they cry, someone comes to give them what they need. This might be a nappy change, a feed or a cuddle. If that happens, baby will learn that the world is a pretty OK place.

When you respond quickly to comfort your crying newborn, your baby might cry less often overall. Its absolutely fine to pick up your newborn baby when they cry. It helps your baby feel safe and know that youre nearby.

You cant spoil a newborn. If your newborn is crying, its because they need you to comfort them. If you respond calmly and consistently, it helps your baby learn that the world is a safe and predictable place.

It is important that you dont become stressed by him crying or he will mirror your stress.Babies cry. They need to cry because that is their only way to communicate. So listen, like you would a friend who is trying to make sense of a confusing situation.

A Typical Evening With A Newborn

You feed your baby until she looks fast asleep. You carefully put her down in her bed. Either immediately or soon afterwards she wakes up and cries. You think she must be hungry maybe breastfeeding isnt working? You feed her again until you think she cant possibly fit in any more milk, and put her down. and so on, until the early hours of the morning.

Although you may worry that your baby cries at the breast because theres a problem with feeding, as long as the signs of milk intake are OK , and your baby is happier the rest of the time, its probably nothing to do with hunger, or a breastfeeding malfunction! Your baby is most likely to have woken up because they were put down.

For our ancestors, a baby who was left alone was a baby who probably wouldnt survive. Your baby has an alarm, carefully developed over thousands of years of human evolution, that is programmed to go off if she senses that she has been left alone.

Should I Let My 6 Month Old Cry It Out

Although you shouldnt leave your baby to cry for long periods of time, letting a six month old cry for a short, predictable spell will not do him any harm. Not all parents like the idea of this approach and its fine to give it a miss and try something else if it doesnt appeal or if it doesnt suit your baby.

Attachment Milestone : Attention And Regulation

Attention and regulation go hand-in-hand, because a baby who cant calm down wont be able to pay attention and interact with you.

Your baby has periods when they are calm , attentive , and shows interest in faces, but doesnt necessarily engage with you at this point.

You follow your babys lead. When your baby pays attention to you, you respond with gentle touch, soothing tone of voice, and playful facial expressions. When your baby looks away, you do the same.

Why Babies Like To Be Held

The answer has everything to do with the flight response human evolved after a couple of millennia spent, at least in part, getting eaten by very large cats. When the person holding you is standing up, ready to run, it makes sense to be still so as not to interfere with their flight.

What Type of Parent Are You? TAKE THE QUIZ!

The infant calming response to maternal carrying is a coordinated set of central, motor, and cardiac regulations, according to the authors of a 2013 study in Current Biology, who observed human and mouse mothers trying to soothe their fussy newborns. Infants under six months of age carried by a walking mother immediately stopped voluntary movement and crying and exhibited a rapid heart rate decrease. This can be exhausting for parents, but it may also be an evolutionary boon. The calming responses may increase the survival probability of the infant in cases of emergency escape by the mother-infant dyad, the researchers added.

    • Place your baby across your lap on his or her belly and rub your baby’s back.
    • Put your baby in a swing or vibrating seat. The motion may be soothing.
    • Put your baby in an infant car seat in the back of the car and go for a ride. Often, the vibration and movement of the car are calming.
    • Play music some babies respond to sound as well as movement.

Some babies need less stimulation. Babies 2 months and younger may do well swaddled, lying on their back in the crib with the lights very dim or dark. Make sure the swaddle isn’t too tight. Stop swaddling when the baby is starting to be able to roll over.
