Understanding And Responding To Your Newborn Babys Behaviour
Your newborn baby is working out what the world is like. The way you respond to your babys behaviour, especially crying, tells your baby a lot about the world.
For example, your baby might find out that when they cry, someone comes to give them what they need. This might be a nappy change, a feed or a cuddle. If that happens, baby will learn that the world is a pretty OK place.
When you respond quickly to comfort your crying newborn, your baby might cry less often overall. Its absolutely fine to pick up your newborn baby when they cry. It helps your baby feel safe and know that youre nearby.
You cant spoil a newborn. If your newborn is crying, its because they need you to comfort them. If you respond calmly and consistently, it helps your baby learn that the world is a safe and predictable place.

If Crying Escalates After Putting Baby Down
If his crying escalates a lot after 10 minutes, go to him and say very calmly, Oh, you are having a rough time of this. Im going to pick you up and give you a cuddle.
Hold him, and even soothe him with some gentle rocking until he is calm .
It is important that you dont become stressed by him crying or he will mirror your stress.Babies cry. They need to cry because that is their only way to communicate. So listen, like you would a friend who is trying to make sense of a confusing situation.
The minute he is calm, stop rocking.
Explain to him you are going to put him down for a rest, and you will rest too. Then lay on your bed , and at the very least, close your eyes.
He will go to sleep. Because he needs to sleep so trust in the process. He is capable. He just needs you to model the behaviour you want him to learn, and create the most sleep-inducing environment you can. Rest with him, and he will likely take longer naps if you do.
Babies learn quickly given the right conditions. Its our anxiety and pressure that we need to be mindful of, because they pick up on it. This tension can itself prevent him from sleeping.
Is It Bad To Hold Your Newborn While They Sleep
Its always okay to hold an infant under four months old, to put them to sleep the way they need it, says Satya Narisety, MD, assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at Rutgers University. A Typical Evening With A Newborn
You feed your baby until she looks fast asleep. You carefully put her down in her bed. Either immediately or soon afterwards she wakes up and cries. You think she must be hungry maybe breastfeeding isnt working? You feed her again until you think she cant possibly fit in any more milk, and put her down. and so on, until the early hours of the morning.
Although you may worry that your baby cries at the breast because theres a problem with feeding, as long as the signs of milk intake are OK , and your baby is happier the rest of the time, its probably nothing to do with hunger, or a breastfeeding malfunction! Your baby is most likely to have woken up because they were put down.
The conditions that adults might prefer for sleep quiet, dark, being left alone are scary for babies, who fear being abandoned more than anything. For our ancestors, a baby who was left alone was a baby who probably wouldnt survive. Your baby has an alarm, carefully developed over thousands of years of human evolution, that is programmed to go off if she senses that she has been left alone.
How Is Colic Diagnosed
The healthcare provider will ask about your childs symptoms and health history. He or she will give your child a physical exam. You may be asked questions such as:
- How long and how often does your baby cry?
- Have you found anything that seems to trigger the crying?
- What comfort methods help to calm your baby, if any?
Blood tests and X-rays or other imaging tests may be done. These can help find out if your baby has other health problems.

Should I Let My 6 Month Old Cry It Out
Although you shouldnt leave your baby to cry for long periods of time, letting a six month old cry for a short, predictable spell will not do him any harm. Not all parents like the idea of this approach and its fine to give it a miss and try something else if it doesnt appeal or if it doesnt suit your baby.
Attachment Milestone : Attention And Regulation
Attention and regulation go hand-in-hand, because a baby who cant calm down wont be able to pay attention and interact with you.
Your baby has periods when they are calm , attentive , and shows interest in faces, but doesnt necessarily engage with you at this point.
You follow your babys lead. When your baby pays attention to you, you respond with gentle touch, soothing tone of voice, and playful facial expressions. When your baby looks away, you do the same.

Why Babies Like To Be Held
The answer has everything to do with the flight response human evolved after a couple of millennia spent, at least in part, getting eaten by very large cats. When the person holding you is standing up, ready to run, it makes sense to be still so as not to interfere with their flight.
The infant calming response to maternal carrying is a coordinated set of central, motor, and cardiac regulations, according to the authors of a 2013 study in Current Biology, who observed human and mouse mothers trying to soothe their fussy newborns. Infants under six months of age carried by a walking mother immediately stopped voluntary movement and crying and exhibited a rapid heart rate decrease. This can be exhausting for parents, but it may also be an evolutionary boon. The calming responses may increase the survival probability of the infant in cases of emergency escape by the mother-infant dyad, the researchers added.

If your babys been with grown-ups all day, its not surprising that being in a bed or room on their own at night can feel tough. Get your baby used to spending time in their cot during the day. Make it more familiar by playing with them while theyre in their cot and putting a few of their favourite toys in with them in the day .
Some evidence suggests trying to recreate the womb environment, such as using a cradle with a rocking motion, white noise and/or complete darkness . But just think, in 15 years, you wont be able to get them out of their rooms.
What Can Help A Crying Baby
You can’t spoil your baby with too much attention. To soothe a crying baby:
- First, make sure your baby doesn’t have a fever. In a baby, a fever is a temperature of 100.4°F . Call the doctor right away if your baby does have a fever.
- Make sure your baby isn’t hungry and has a clean diaper.
- Rock or walk with the baby.
- Sing or talk to your baby.
- Offer the baby a pacifier.
- Take the baby for a ride in a stroller.
- Hold your baby close against your body and take calm, slow breaths.
- Give the baby a warm bath.
- Pat or rub the baby’s back.
- Place your baby across your lap on his or her belly and rub your baby’s back.
- Put your baby in a swing or vibrating seat. The motion may be soothing.
- Put your baby in an infant car seat in the back of the car and go for a ride. Often, the vibration and movement of the car are calming.
- Play music some babies respond to sound as well as movement.
Some babies need less stimulation. Babies 2 months and younger may do well swaddled, lying on their back in the crib with the lights very dim or dark. Make sure the swaddle isn’t too tight. Stop swaddling when the baby is starting to be able to roll over.

Why Does My Baby Wake Up When I Put Her Down
Its many a parents frustrated cry: Why does my baby wake up when I put her down?
Your baby has finally fallen asleep in your arms, and you want to put her down so you can have a break, go to the toilet or even feed yourself!
You quietly tiptoe towards your babys bed, doing your very best not to disturb her.
Painfully slowly, and with super-smooth motion, you lower her into bed.
But the minute she hits the mattress, her eyelids fly open and she immediately eyeballs you with the, I cant believe you just tried to put me down! look on her face.
Shes wide awake.
Its all over.
She wants to be back in your arms.
No matter how many times you try, or how deep a sleep you think shes in, it happens again.
What Can You Do
There are several actions you can take to make your baby stop crying. Although these ideas may not always work, its good to give them a try and see what works for your baby.
Move the Baby Around
If the newborn cries when put down, sway her. This swaying strengthens the bond between the two of you. It also gives you time to rest. Amazon has excellent quality baby gliders for your young one.
You can also try moving around with your baby in a carrier. You can get good carriers from Amazon. Also, riding in a car is soothing to the baby and can help him sleep.
Give Baby a Dummy
Babies love sucking on, either their thumbs or dummies because it helps them relax. Additionally, sucking on something steadies babys heart rate, gives stomach relief and provides overall calm for the baby.
Give Baby a Massage
Massaging your baby, especially through rubbing the stomach and back, has a relaxing effect. If your baby has gas troubles, hold her upright against your shoulder. To reduce colic, massage the stomach to calm the pain.
Sing a Soft Lullaby
Its natural for babies to enjoy music. Therefore if your newborn cries when put down, try singing. Mothers gentle singing voice has a calming effect in addition to the warmth of her arms.
Additionally, the songs have the ability to make bedtime moments an amazing time for your baby. Music drives the baby into a drowsy mood which leads to sleep.
