Take The Photographs In A Room With Plenty Of Window Light
To take beautiful photographs, you’ll need plenty of window light.
Have a look around your home, and look for a window where there’s plenty of light coming in, but not direct sunlight. Then find the spot where the light starts to fall onto the floor from the window. It’ll probably be a few steps away from the window, unless your window goes all the way down to the floor. That point is where you will photograph your baby the top of your baby’s head will be pointing towards the window, and their feet will be pointing away from the window. The photograph below shows you what this would look like.
Best Newborn Photography Props
There are five main types of props used during a newborn photography photo shoot.
1. Round Prop
For round props, things like woven baskets, wood bowls, and nests are used. Photographers love this style of prop because they seem to naturally keep baby in a nice, round shape.
2. Rectangle Prop
The most popular rectangular props right now are wood and bamboo crates. Baby is always padded underneath with layers of knit blankets, faux fur or felted wool for comfort. This prop is also perfect for capturing close up macro shots of babys details.
3. Baby Bed Prop
Wood baby beds are the most popular newborn photography prop right now. They are often handmade by a woodworker photographers. Made with specific dimensions, they are perfectly sized for a newborn baby.
4. Bucket Prop
Although the bucket prop shot can be more challenging, it sure is a parent favorite! In this prop, babys half swaddled body is placed down into the bucket. Babys arms rest on the edge of the bucket for a perfect shot of their face. Dont worry, there is plenty of padding and support in and around the inside of the bucket to keep baby very comfortable. Buckets props come in a variety of materials, with wood and metal being the most popular in newborn photography.

Your newborn baby has his or her own schedule. When they get fussy, be sure to take your time and wait it out. Sometimes youll spend 3-4 hours on a shoot with the baby crying the entire time and finally, in the last 20 minutes, youll get everything you need. Its not going to be easy and be sure to plan sufficient time or the shoot. Your shoot duration will vary depending on the number of wardrobe changes and scene setups, but in general be flexible. If youre doing this professionally, consider charging per session, per image, or per scene rather than charging per hour.

Provide A Sense Of Scale
Newborns are tiny, so highlight their size. Place that itty-bitty baby hand on top of a giant Mom or Dads hand, include a ruler in your frame, or introduce other props to showcase this specific stage in the babys growth.
Keep any props and outfits simple and intentional so as not to detract from your main subject the newborn! Get creative and try different angles.
If Hiring A Photographer
Obviously, professional-level photos are still going to be best captured by professional photographers. Weighing and evaluating risks for our families is part of parenting. Many photographers have been adapting their business to the new normal, with porch portraits, outdoor shoots, and more. Ive been offering editing services since March, Hoover said. When Is The Best Time For A Photo Shoot During Your Babys First Year
The truth is that whenever you have a photo shoot during your babys first year the photographs will be incredibly special.
Each time you look at them youll remember just how your baby was at that age, and all of the lovely memories you have from that time.
But, there are some ages and stages that I recommend as being better than others for a photo shoot. These stages are:
- The newborn stage, when your baby is just a few days or weeks old
- 6-8 months when your baby is can sit up unsupported but isnt yet crawling
- Around 12 months to mark your babys first birthday

Professional shooters have years of experience mastering poses for babies. Dont expect to take gorgeous shots from the first try. Nevertheless, you may take incredible pictures no matter what. I suggest picking basic poses which look really realistic. For instance, try shooting your baby while he/she is sleeping with the arms raised over the head.

Here Is A Break Down Of What To Expect At Sessions For Babies In The First Year
1 7 weeks old: These are traditional newborn sessions. Babies are sleepy for most of the day, making it easy to pose babies in the popular newborn poses. Baies are swaddled, posed in buckets or baskets, and in sleepy poses laying on beautiful fabric backdrops. I also include some great awake pictures, to document all those great baby expressions in the first few weeks. 8 weeks 3 months: At this age baby is awake more. They still enjoy being wrapped, enjoy tummy time, and begin smiling and mimicking facial expressions. Many of the poses are similar to newborn poses, but adjusted to accommodate babys growing body and decreased sleeping time.
4 6 months: This stage is different for all babies. I often encourage parents to not get caught up in the month of when we take pictures, but focus more on the milestones you baby is reaching. It is better to wait a few weeks until baby is able to sit unassisted. This will give your sessions in the first year more variety and also show the big milestones baby has reached.
7 9 months: Babies at this stage are typically able to sit on unassisted. This is also my favorite milestone for babies. They are able to sit and crawl, have great facial expression but cant run away from me yet. Because that will happen when they can walk!

Process Newborn Photos With Editing Software
If you plan on editing, remember to change your camera settings to shoot in RAW format instead of JPEG. RAW photos contain more information, giving you more control during the actual editing process. Also, even when you have the right newborn photography camera settings in place, its still a good idea to edit your shots for high-quality, professional results.

Print Those Pictures Out
Please, for the love of all that is newborn photography, do not leave all of your beautiful newborn photos sitting on your hard drive. Print those babies out!
I feel a bit hypocritical telling you this, as I myself have been absolutely horrible about printing my own images, but just do it. Do not wait to design the perfect wall display, or to choose the perfect picture. If you see a good canvas sale going on, just order something. You will love it I promise!
What am I doing with all of Gabriels newborn images? I am making an epic baby album for him, of course. I cannot wait to order it and have it in my hands! There is NO substitute for the actual finished product for you and your family to enjoy.
Pictures on a computer screen are nice, but a huge 30×40 canvas hanging in the entryway of your home is even nicer. Trust me on this.

Be Careful With Overheating
Although warmth can help calm and sleep a baby, excessive overheating can be dangerous. If it is too hot in a room, your baby may have trouble breathing: it may be very fast and uneven. You can also observe too fast heart beating with a broken rhythm. If you notice changes in breathing or that skin is too hot, stop taking pictures immediately. You must turn off the heater and give the baby wrapped in a light blanket to the mother.
Tips For The Sweetest Newborn Photography Sessions
Our recommendation is to wait until the newborn is nice and sleepy. This allows you to pose and photograph in freedom.
You will find this is easier when the newborn is only a few days old. Whereas a week old newborn can take up to an hour to fall asleep.

Dont Give Too Much Food
You should not overfeed a baby. The child may be too active after such overeating. In addition, the diet is broken, so there may be some problems with spitting up and gas. In my opinion, even the coolest newborn photography poses and ideas are not worth the inconvenience that you cause to breastfeeding moms by giving the bottles. Avoid overfeeding if you want to get amazing shots!
Get Candids Of Siblings
The best way to incorporate siblings into your newborn pictures is naturally! Forcing a sibling to sit and smile while holding a newborn baby is pretty much a guarantee for a meltdown, Marleau says. Instead, she recommends going for more candid shots.
Need some ideas of how photograph your kids together? If the sibling is young and not quite ready to hold baby by themselves, try having them lie on the bed next to your newborn, Marleau suggests. To get them to interact with baby, give them prompts, like can you touch babys nose? or what does babys hair smell like? If the sibling is a older and can confidently hold baby in their lap, try giving them a task, like reading baby a book.
If babys sibling is a little reluctant to participate, consider having them hold a comfort item, like a specific blanket, doll or figurine, Marleau says. Plus, it gives them something to fiddle with while youre trying to get the shot. And if that fails, theres always bribery. I bring a variety of treats, like stickers or raisins, Juliet says. Sometimes it just takes a gummy bear to get that sweet sibling portrait that mom will cherish forever.
