Should I Buy Newborn Size Cloth Diapers

This is a question we get a lot here at Cloth Diaper Kids. Should you buy newborn cloth diapers, or go straight to one size cloth diapers. Those itty bitty newborn diapers look so sweet and adorable it is sure hard to resist them, but to invest in a whole bunch of tiny newborn diapers that get outgrown so quickly can be a major deterrent to considering them at all. Its easy to see the value and convenience in a one size diaper that can adjust from smaller to larger, but as weve discussed before, the majority of one size diapers do not start fitting babies nicely until they reach about 10lbs. So what do you do during that grey area between newborn and 10lbs ? Is the newborn cloth diaper really worth it or not?

Well, you have a few options. You can:

But now, what if one of the above situations doesnt really fit for you and the tiny diapers are calling your name? Heres a few situations when investing in newborn specific diapers really is worth it:

Hopefully that helps you decide whether newborn size cloth diapers are right for your baby. And as always, we love questions, so ask away if theres anything else youd like to know!

Stocking Up On Diapers

Keep in mind that you will get samples of newborn diapers from the hospital. They sent us home with 2-3 packages of newborn diapers for each of my babies.

Typically, we only ever needed one extra pack of newborn size diapers than what the hospital sent home with us. You also may get some as a gift or even one of those cute diaper cakes!

With that in mind, I would suggest stocking up on diapers sizes 1, 2, and 3. Do Not open the boxes of diapers until you are ready to use them because you can exchange the boxes for different sizes if your baby grows out of them before you even use them.

Baby Diaper Size Chart

While sizing varies between different manufacturers, this diaper sizing chart can serve as a guide. Of course, parents should try multiple brands and styles to find what works best.

  • Preemie Diaper Size: 6 lbs and under
  • Newborn Diaper Size: 10 pounds and under
  • Size 1: 8 -14 lbs
  • Size 2: 12-18 lbs
  • Size 6: 35 lbs and over
  • Size 7: 41 lbs and over .

As you may notice, some baby weights overlap between two different sizes. In this case, consider your babyâs body type when picking out diapers. A lean and long baby may benefit from the smaller size, for example, while a larger baby will fit best in the bigger size. Finding the best diaper size might take a bit of trial and error as your child grows.

A Short Primer On Diapers

How many cloth diapers do I need to get started?

Diaper sizes are based on weight. Disposable diapers often contain sodium polyacrylate , a compound that is used in a number of ways. Sodium polyacrylate is utilized as a food thickening agent as well as in the manufacturing of baby diapers. In the latter, sodium polyacrylate comes in contact with urine and turns it into a gel. This superabsorbent polymer keeps babies dry .

Gender can play a part in how many diapers are required. Boys tend to weigh about 10 pounds by 4 weeks old, while girls of average weight will be around 10 pounds at 6 weeks old. Typically, boys have more accidents on the changing table. Consider putting a wipe or cloth over your little boy when changing them .

There is a common misconception that the size of the diaper is referring to the age of babies. This is not so. When you buy diapers, keep in mind that the size refers to the weight of the baby.

When To Size Up In Diapers

One of the first things you learn as a new parent is how to change a diaper. Not before long, you become a diaper-changing expert. The next type of diaper change you should be aware of is changing diaper sizes.

You may have noticed your little one has gotten a bit bigger. Youre wondering when is the right time to move from newborn diapers to size one, two, three, and above. Here are a few signs I recommend parents look out for to help them know when it is time to move on up:

  • Butt Coverage. Are you noticing your babys diaper doesnt appear to be covering their bottom as much as it has previously? The right amount of coverage is very important when it comes to a diapers ability to function effectively and eliminate leakage. If this sounds familiar, try going up a size.
  • Tabs are getting further from the stomach. If the diaper tabs are closer to the babys hips rather than their center or the wing that connects the tab appears overly stretched, then it is time to try the next size up.
  • Tight waistband. The babys waistband is the easiest way to check the tightness of the diaper. Use your finger to pull up slightly on the waistband. If you feel tight constriction on your finger, its likely the diaper is too small and is most likely uncomfortable for your baby.
  • Red marks. Red marks due to chaffing in the groin, hips, and waist could be another sign that the diaper is fitting too tightly. You may want to give another size a go.

When To Change A Newborns Diaper

Still, changing diapers around the clock may leave you feeling as though thatâs all youâre doing. Try not to let diaper changes consume your daily routine simply be mindful of when your babys diaper may be wet or dirty.

Another great time to change your newbornâs diaper is before or during feedings. If youâre breastfeeding, as you switch from one breast to the other, take the time to check her diaper, and change it if needed.

If youâre bottle-feeding, check her diaper right before you give her the bottle. After sheâs done with the bottle, you can check again if sheâs hasnât fallen asleep. If she has gone to sleep, then thereâs no need to wake her unless you feel sheâs overly wet or she has a poopy diaper.

To be clear, thats not to say that youll use 240 of the newborn diaper size. Remember, diaper sizes are based on babys weight. This is why I recommend only getting a small amount of the newborn size, but stocking up more in sizes 1 and 2.

    Bringing Diapers Back To Target

Target strives to make the return policy simple and straightforward. If its been 90 days or less and you have your receipt, you can return unopened diapers easily. Even if you dont have your receipt, Target can look up most purchases when you use a credit card or your RedCard as payment.

You can also look up purchases in your Target app and Target Wallet. Returning items with a receipt gets you a full refund, but no receipt will likely get you a gift card. As a perk for RedCard holders, if you use your RedCard to pay, you get 120 days to return unopened diapers. You also have a year to return Target-owned brands and registry items.

The same return policy applies to diapers you buy at Target.com, but you can return them via mail or in-store. A few clicks via the website or app will initiate the return process for you.

How Often Do You Change Cloth Diapers

The first thing you need to take into account is the frequency of cloth diaper change.

More frequent changes would mean MORE organic cloth diapers you need to buy.

But it honestly depends on your baby because there are some who wet themselves MORE FREQUENTLY than others. The same goes for babies who do the opposite.

You have to get to know their quirks so you can get a feel for how much they wet themselves in a day. That way, you can estimate more accurately how many cloth diapers youll need every day.

Although, there are two more other factors that you have to consider as well:

    • The AGE of your baby

How Many Cloth Diapers Do You Need for a Newborn?

Since newborns can vary so much in size, the need for newborn diapers can be vastly different.

With the weight range for size 1 diapers starting at only eight pounds, many babies can begin wearing them immediately or in the first few weeks of life. Babies born on the lower end of the weight distribution, however, may stay in newborn sizes for months.

If you are trying to predict the number of newborn diapers your baby will need, you will start with their birth weight. In the first five days, most babies lose about 8 ounces . They typically reach their birth weight around two weeks of age and continue to grow about 6 ounces a week until they are six months.

After the first five days, a newborn will use about nine diapers a day.

    Helpful Diaper Tips From Moms

We interviewed a few moms on our team to see if they had any helpful diaper tips, and boy, did they deliver :

  • Use a bigger diaper overnight. If your child is waking up with wet jammies, try having them sleep in a bigger diaper for better absorbency.

  • Use diaper booster pads. These are similar to maxi pads, and fit into diapers for extra protection. Theyâre especially good for toddlers.

  • Make sure you have one diaper in your diaper bag for every hour you plan to be away. You shouldnât run out of diapers if you follow this rule.

  • Treat blowout stains with a Fels-Naptha bar. This old-timey laundry barâit was introduced in 1893âgets out some really bad stains, making it a game-changer for blowouts.

  • Donât keep using too-small diapers just to finish the box. Itâs not worth the blowouts or irritated baby skin. Save these leftover diapers for your next kid, give them to a friend with a younger baby or donate them to the National Diaper Bank Network. Many of their organizations accept open packs.

    How To Feed A Newborn

For the first two to four days of life, newborns who are breastfeeding will need to be fed every two to three hours, or on demand.

It might not seem like your baby is eating much as your milk supply comes in, but the colostrum you produce immediately following delivery is all they need at this stage.

Transitional milk will replace your milk for the next two weeks, then your mature milk supply will come in.

After the first few days, formula-fed newborns need 2 to 3 ounces of formula per feeding. Theyll need to be fed every three or four hours for the first few weeks.

During the first two weeks of life, if your newborn sleeps longer than four or five hours at a time, you may need to wake them up to eat.

At about 1 month old, both formula- and breastfed babies will need up to 4 ounces per feeding. At this point, formula-fed babies will be on a more predictable schedule, eating about every four hours. Some breastfed babies will eat every four hours, too, but some will still feed more often than this.

BEST KEPT SECRET – How to change a diaper like a boss

Cloth diapers are an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable diapers. After an initial investment, you can choose to use cloth diapers without continuing to shell out money for disposable optionsand maybe even reuse for subsequent children. But even though you wont need nearly as many cloth diapers as you would disposable options , youll still need to have quite a few on hand. Newborns tend to wet every 1.5 to two hours because of their tiny bladders, says April Duffy, founder of Cloth Diapers for Beginners, an online community. So if youll be cloth diapering your newborn, you should expect to go through about 12 to 14 diapers per day.

How many cloth diapers you purchase above this number depends on your laundry habits. If you want to wash your diapers every other day, Duffy says youd want about 24 to 28 diapers in your rotation, with an extra two or three for good measure. If you plan on washing every three days, youd want 36 to 42 cloth diapers in your stash, she adds.

If you want to do cloth diapering, youll probably still need diapers on reserve, even if you plan on running the wash cycle every day. Some parents who use cloth diapers choose to use disposables for the first month, simply because newborns go through so many per day.

But if you do want to invest in newborn cloth sizes, have at least 20 on hand . Keep in mind, your baby may not fit into these for long.

How often you plan on doing laundry influences the amount of cloth diapers youll need to have on hand. Most families like to have 24 cloth diapers total, but you could get away with as few as 14 if you absolutely needed to .

Whether you opt for disposable or cloth diapers, you might not know what works best on your baby right away. And thats okay: Youll figure it out through a bit of trial and error.
