Stocking Up On Diapers

Keep in mind that you will get samples of newborn diapers from the hospital. They sent us home with 2-3 packages of newborn diapers for each of my babies.

Typically, we only ever needed one extra pack of newborn size diapers than what the hospital sent home with us. You also may get some as a gift or even one of those cute diaper cakes!

With that in mind, I would suggest stocking up on diapers sizes 1, 2, and 3. Do Not open the boxes of diapers until you are ready to use them because you can exchange the boxes for different sizes if your baby grows out of them before you even use them.

While sizing varies between different manufacturers, this diaper sizing chart can serve as a guide. Of course, parents should try multiple brands and styles to find what works best.

For newborns you can expect to use 8-10 diapers a day for the first 30 days, bringing us to roughly 240 DIAPERS during babys first month!

To be clear, thats not to say that youll use 240 of the newborn diaper size. Remember, diaper sizes are based on babys weight. This is why I recommend only getting a small amount of the newborn size, but stocking up more in sizes 1 and 2.

How To Feed A Newborn

For the first two to four days of life, newborns who are breastfeeding will need to be fed every two to three hours, or on demand.

It might not seem like your baby is eating much as your milk supply comes in, but the colostrum you produce immediately following delivery is all they need at this stage.

Transitional milk will replace your milk for the next two weeks, then your mature milk supply will come in.

After the first few days, formula-fed newborns need 2 to 3 ounces of formula per feeding. Theyll need to be fed every three or four hours for the first few weeks.

During the first two weeks of life, if your newborn sleeps longer than four or five hours at a time, you may need to wake them up to eat.

At about 1 month old, both formula- and breastfed babies will need up to 4 ounces per feeding. At this point, formula-fed babies will be on a more predictable schedule, eating about every four hours. How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need

Cloth diapers are an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable diapers. After an initial investment, you can choose to use cloth diapers without continuing to shell out money for disposable optionsand maybe even reuse for subsequent children. But even though you wont need nearly as many cloth diapers as you would disposable options , youll still need to have quite a few on hand. Newborns tend to wet every 1.5 to two hours because of their tiny bladders, says April Duffy, founder of Cloth Diapers for Beginners, an online community. So if youll be cloth diapering your newborn, you should expect to go through about 12 to 14 diapers per day.

How many cloth diapers you purchase above this number depends on your laundry habits. If you want to wash your diapers every other day, Duffy says youd want about 24 to 28 diapers in your rotation, with an extra two or three for good measure. If you plan on washing every three days, youd want 36 to 42 cloth diapers in your stash, she adds.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do You Need

If you want to do cloth diapering, youll probably still need diapers on reserve, even if you plan on running the wash cycle every day. Some parents who use cloth diapers choose to use disposables for the first month, simply because newborns go through so many per day.

But if you do want to invest in newborn cloth sizes, have at least 20 on hand . Keep in mind, your baby may not fit into these for long.

How often you plan on doing laundry influences the amount of cloth diapers youll need to have on hand. Most families like to have 24 cloth diapers total, but you could get away with as few as 14 if you absolutely needed to .
