What Are Baby Sleep Cycles
Baby sleep cycles are very different to adult sleep cycles as babies need far more hours of rest than grown-ups.
A newborn’s sleep cycle is quite simple and has only two stages quiet and active sleep.

Because babies this age are more awake, alert, and aware of their surroundings during daylight hours, they’re more likely to be tired at night and sleep. But the range of normal is still very wide.

How Long Are Sleep Cycles In Babies
While adult sleep cycles are usually around 90 minutes, babies have shorter sleep cycles. Baby sleep cycles are usually 40-50 minutes and vary by time of day and each night. Since children spend 1-2 hours in deep sleep, if your baby is waking at night, you might find they wake every 1-2 hours all night. This was the case for my son who inspired this website.
Also, we frequently hear from parents that their baby wakes even more frequently as we approach early morning. This is, again, because we spend a lot of time in deep sleep in the first part of the night. Therefore, 4:00 to 6:00 a.m. is often the most challenging for many families. A baby waking too early is one of the most common and difficult sleep problems to solve! Children who wake up after Stage 3 in the early morning are likely waking up crying whereas babies who enter Stage 4 before waking for the day wake up happy and refreshed.

How Can Parents Help Their Babies Sleep Through The Night
In addition to a consistent bedtime routine, two strategies have been demonstrated as effective in helping babies sleep uninterrupted during the night: bedtime fading and graduated extinction.
Bedtime fading is putting the baby to bed 15 minutes later each night to compress sleep and limit time in bed. If the parent checks on the baby 15 minutes after putting them to bed and they are asleep, bedtime no longer needs to be delayed.
Graduated extinction is the process of creating longer and longer gaps between when a baby cries and when the parent responds to the cry. The parent waits for two minutes after the baby first cries before responding, then waits four, and then six minutes after the next cries. These waiting periods are gradually extended over time until the baby has learned to self-soothe.

Once a baby begins to regularly sleep through the night, parents are often unhappy when the baby starts to wake up at night again. This often happens at about 6 months old. This is often a normal part of development called separation anxiety. This is when a baby does not understand that separations are short-term . Babies may also start to have trouble going to sleep because of separation anxiety. Or because they are overstimulated or overtired.
Common responses of babies having these night awakenings or trouble going to sleep may include the following:
Waking and crying one or more times in the night after sleeping through the night
Crying when you leave the room
Refusing to go to sleep without a parent nearby
Clinging to the parent at separation
Sleep problems may also happen with illness. Talk with your baby’s healthcare provider if your baby begins having trouble going to sleep or staying asleep, especially if this is a new pattern.

Why Won’t My Baby Stay Asleep
If your baby stays asleep for a few hours at a time, that could be completely normal and healthy for them, even if it differs from your sleep schedule. Sleeping for short blocks of time, such as three to four hours, is typical for newborns.
Around three months of age, many babies begin to sleep for somewhat longer time periods. By the age of six months, a majority of infants sleep for six hours uninterrupted at night. Still, there’s quite a bit of variation among babies when it comes to sleep duration. Your baby could be a completely healthy one-year-old and still not regularly sleep for six hours uninterrupted.

To 12 Months: When Sleeping Through The Night Could Start
At 6 months old, your baby may start sleeping the majority of her daily sleep hours during the night.
Between 6 and 10 months is the period when your baby will start getting more active and mobile, as she begins rolling over, crawling, and pulling herself up on furniture. All these activities tire her out, resulting in these longer periods of sleep at night.
At about 8or 9 months old, your baby might be able to sleep anywhere between 6 to 12 hours at night without waking up hungry.
